I originally installed my own carpet in my house. Recently it needed to be replace and my wife hired a carpet contractor. He removed the tack strip on the sides of my steps. He said it wasn't suppose to be a tack strip there. I am going to call the owner out on it. Where is the pride in peoples work. "Floors by Southern Boys" you take pride in your work. Great job.

Great video on this .This is another one I see all the time no Tac strip to stretch on the sides and loose Carpet. Dude it was not me it's the crappy 1/2 8 pound pad or 7/16 8 pound. Just like you stated there not doing the sides and going back and hitting the front a few times. This comes from guys who have been doing this 15 plus years .Glad you posted this as well.

Are you sealing the carpet sides to guard against fiber unraveling. Since only 1/8 inch is added to the width, the side gutter is not being used in the conventional step down manner, but rather as a simple angle bend for appearance sake. If sealer is not being used are you optimizing the cuts to be close to a backing web strand? Maybe I am overthinking fibers coming loose while tucking and vacuuming the sides and nose ends. Love your videos, take pride in doing the best job you can do. For me you lead the way.

Ruben, thanks for all the great videos. Do you have a suggestion if the stairs aren't straight? I have an old house and the back of the tread where it meets the riser is up to 3/4" wider than the front of the tread on most steps. I will have to do every stair separately I'm sure.

I like the look of the carpet tucked under the bullnose. I was in stair manufacturing for 20+ years, and I don't recall seeing any stairs done that way...and I've been in a lot of homes, by different builders and from low end to high end. One thing I discovered was, when installers would kick the carpet in the middle of the riser, they would knock the riser loose from the back of the tread.

No sir a nail gun will not work. It will sit right through the carpet staples have a Crown, which grabs the carpet.

Very well detailed rube. Grandad used to use seam tape for the ends. The stairs do last longer from the latex of the backing of the carpet. 💪❤️🙏

Newbie to carpet installs here! I'm getting ready to do a landing in my home theater room with a single bull nose lip. I watched a lot of your videos and appreciate all the great advice and tips you give!! I do have one question. Couldn't you also install a tack strip directly under the bull nose lip? That way when you stretch the carpet, it will pull on the tack strip v/s the staples? Any negatives to that or will that be fine to do?

Just had carpet installed and I feel the tack strip with my toes on every step. My kids say they are stepping on them too. The installers used the old strip. Any thoughts why this is happening? What is the right way to fix it? It’s on 8 lb moisture barrier pad too.

The tack strip may be too far out into the step instead of up close to the riser , Feel free to take a hammer in town those pants down and just by tapping on top of the carpet and that will fix it for you

I'm using an air nailer for my bullnose, and my first attempt sent the staples straight through the carpet and raveled the carpet. What pressure do you recommend on the air nailer to catch the carpet and not go through it? What length staples are you using?

When duct tape dries out with age it tends to cause crackling noises. Why do some installers say that the front of the nosing shouldn't have underlay?

Thanks buddie .. by the bullnose step I meant the bottom step that goes round one way . In America there probably bigger staircases with doubles but our typical flight if stairs has one at the bottom that goes either to the left or to the right . Be grateful if you could do a vid on that step :)

Firstly, if I have to use several lengths of carpet for the stairs, would you add carpet grips/tack strips at the bottom of the riser as well as the back of the tread, so that the two separate pieces of carpet will each have something to tuck into? Secondly, I have size 11 feet and my treads are only 8" long, so worry about my heels and toes hitting tacks each time I go up and down the stairs. Any advice?

Nosir ,in no case should you put tax strip on the riser if there is a bullnose on the step, and even with a size 11 you should not step on the tack strip, I am a 10 1/2 myself and I have never felt tack strip on steps

A lot of guys and probably you would have fired me for the way I did those type of steps. I would cut individual pieces for the step and then cut individual pieces for the risers. I knew it was time consuming but, if a pet or something damaged one step then all I had to do was rip the carpet off that step without interfering with the other steps or riser.

There's nothing wrong with the way you are talking about it's is still used, its just another method that some installers use depending on the situation. Personally I sometimes use the way you are talking about on Berber carpet because I find it Bit easier, just remember there are a number of ways to install carpet on steps, This guy is a very good and pleasant teacher and he explains everything nicely.

@@Cherokee10g That's true. I do admit, every job I ripped old carpet from steps never was done the way I installed them. I saw guys use one or two pieces of carpet to do let's say 12 straight steps and be done in no time. I attempted that method plenty of times and always hated when 3 or 4 steps go in nice and straight but then the next couple steps are smaller .

Take your underlay down to your riser gripper, no need for duck tape.plus stops holes appearing in the carpet on the riser made from peoples toe caps

Builders never square steps. lol I've done steps that were almost an inch off from the last... Tucking in is the best way to fix that issue

yea i know what you mean but on some of those stiff back i have gone to 3 row pin tackstrip plus mist it down with hot water. if you remember it was originally called tackless, but some time i hit or rub the nails down. thanks
