It’s been quite a few years already that I have been watching many of your outstanding instructional videos. I’m sure that, like myself, so many viewers must have not only been inspired by your vids to improve their game but also have found that to be a realistic and achievable goal, regardless of their level or how long they may have been playing the game. You and Alex don’t just have a knack for pointing out both the basics and the nuances of the game but also for explaining them so succinctly. Last but not least, I want you to know that most of the time, after watching your videos, I often wished that I could just give you many more than just one ’Like’!! Anyway, thank you very much for playing no small role in inspiring me to keep wanting to improve my game!

at 4.0 NTRP level the most annoying are the second serves that have no pace. They don't jump as high, and being an one-hander is quite complicated to generate lots of top-spin to attack such serves. Even on the forehand, I have troubles adjusting for these balls so that I lift them up and hit a strong return. Would be good to make a video about such scenarios. Thx!

Great video wonderful detail on an area that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Question, the split step for return of serve you describe would it be the same movement at the baseline for a ball hit hard to a sideline? I realize we wouldn’t cut the angle off but is the movement the same outside leg than other foot comes across?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
There are many different ways to split step when returning. Some players step into a split, starting further back then going into the split off one leg (Murray style) Agassi would split step on the spot often from a narrow position. Djokovic often uses a double or triple split step. Nadal bounces between both feet then goes into the split. Federer uses a wide variety 👍 We cover this inside our footwork course on the website

Hi Simon thanks again for a great video. I would like to ask your natural grip whether you are in return of serve or a ready position. As far as I know you have an eastern forehand grip and double handed backhand. "If the ball is coming to your forehand are you switching from continental to eastern or you are already in eastern grip" or vice versa "if the ball is coming to your backhand are you switching from eastern forehand to continental grip or you are already in continental grip?" Shortly, what is your natural grip when you are in waiting position :) Many thanks.

Point #2 you make I find is really useful. I have always found going inside out forehand receiving on the ad side that if I just orient the entire body forwards with an aggressive swing that the ball either goes to their feet or cross-court winner. Oddly on these balls I have found them to be sharply precise- that is it ends nearly exactly where I am sub-consciously 'moving'.. In general, It is just moving your body weight from the rear foot to the front and in turn generating forwards momentum. Would you say though the key queue to initiate this in a more reliable manner is to tilt your upper body forwards? Because where the upper body goes the legs tend to follow. As for Point #3 I think the main reason the backswing is instructed to be small is to minimise any time lost in re-positioning behind the baseline but would you agree that a big follow-through means more force on the ball and thus a greater defensive shot from the server?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Leaning into the ball is a great visual aid that I use myself and with my students. For the finish, the follow through is crucial in creating the correct swing path of low to high or medium to high, producing topspin. You could reduce that speed but still finish all the way if you want to absorb power or reduce your own power. All the best Simon

Hi Simon, do you think the first step landing from the split should be onto the foot you are going to push off from? ie: land on the left to push off for a forehand and the opposite for the backhand? I know this is taught as a more efficient way to move to the direction of the ball. Just wondering on your thoughts for this? Even Novak in your video at 8:04 is doing this. Thanks!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
The off split is a more advanced technique, it comes from reading the ball flight mid split. Not easy to do for 90% of players who play the game, elite players do this since they’re so good at reading where the ball is going. If you’re at a high level, for sure you’ll want to get good at it

There is no easy way, years and years of teaching and being a student of the game. The best information you'll get is when you teach players of all ages and abilities and see what works with them.
