To be fair, realistically, aliens in general would not look the slightest bit humanoid. Unless they came from a planet very very similar to Earth and even then, the chances are astronomical. I'm sure you'll probably bring this up in the video itself (I'm typing this in the first minute or so), but the aligned continuity does at least attempt to give us an explanation of sorts. That being, Primus scanned life forms from all across the cosmos in order to create morphologies for his creations. This would explain why most transformers are humanoid, yet others are also more animalistic.

That’s not true. We cannot judge what aliens would look like in the slightest, as earth is the only planet we know of that has Goldilocks conditions and life. While there were many complaints about characterization and some design choices for not looking g1 accurate the more jagged alien designs and the vague details known about their culture allow us to wonder more about how their species differs from ours. Now albeit from a narrative standpoint this didn't always deliver I would argue for the decepticons especially it remained fairly consistent through at least the first 3 films and allowed the audience to see the alien autobots adapt more toward human like appearances as time went on to adjust the audiences comfort level as well. It's one of the aspects that I always enjoyed about the films and disappointed me in bumblebee in comparison.

To be fair, in most instances of transformers lore (such as the aligned continuity and even the bayverse) cybertron and earth are basically similar planets that are connected to the same destiny. Cybertron is the body of primus, and earth is the body of unicron, it would make sense that the planetary titans that were made from the same being would likely develop their species in similar ways. Even though unicron is the embodiment of chaos, it makes sense that he would attempt to make a species that could combat primus the same way primus made the original 13 primes in order to combat unicron. It also helps explain why some transformers share similar genetic defects and disabilities with humans, such as the conjoined twins from cyberverse and bumblebee missing his small flanges between continuities. Now, I'm not saying transformers shouldn't look less human like, but i am saying that it makes sense why they do when you look at the broader image

@bluelightstudios61912 жыл бұрын
My personal theory as to why the transformers share similarities to humans are probably due to unicron's meddling with the natural world, canonically now unicron is inside the earth, he was sealed into it after losing to primus and his 12 or 13 primes. So in order to get revenge he needed to escape and build his own army, so he may have purposefully created humanity as somewhat of a cheap alternative to actual cybertronians possibly because he couldn't actually make legit cybertronians in his condition so he created the humans by evolving a certain species of apes to gain higher intelligence and physical appearences to cybertronians. He would then have humanity colonize all over his rock prison and unintentionally free him by digging the earth of all the hard yet valuable minerals, not only would unicron be free but the materials humanity would have gained would go into their civilization and eventually into a space force for which unicron could easily take control of and command as his own army to fight primus.

my theory for why rescue bots shows they dont cry buy rid 2015 shows they do cry is that sideswipe was made after the war and the rescue bots were made before it so its possible that when prime sacrificed himself to return the allspark he also gave knowelege of earth lifeforms to cybertron making it produce bots that are capable of more human things like crying, it also explains why multiple bots are born with more animalistic robot modes like steeljaw being pure furry bait

Speculative biology is something that also catches the human mind. People would think aliens should be humanoid, only for story telling on a low budget, but it is more complex than that. Just watch Curiosity Archives for their understanding of alien biology. Just the show series, the Expanse, has humans on another world and attack an attack on their colony, they think the metal objects they found where life that evolved to have more metal in their bodies compared to life on Earth. I working on my own fan series for the Transformers, where they were biological creatures that evolved with more metal in their bodies, only for the Quintessos to reformat the Cybertronians into more machine like bodies.

I just had a couple of ideas for in-universe explanations for Transformers/human similarities. First would only really work for a continuity that focuses primarily, if not entirely, on earth, but it would be to give the Transformers more alien appearances _at first_ then have them switch to more humanoid appearances as part of the whole “robots in disguise” deal. They want to incorporate themselves into the host planet’s society, so they model their robot forms and behaviors to more closely resemble the dominant life form. (The vehicle modes being the result of them not being able to completely blend in even with their robot modes). Alternatively, you could take the idea of Unicron inside earth’s core as an explanation for the similarities between humans and Transformers: Primus created the Transformers in his image, while Unicron’s power subtly influenced evolution over billions of years to select for the phenotypes that led to humans evolving. Perhaps the evolution of humans occurring so recently on a geological scale could be a warning sign of Unicron’s approaching awakening. I think I like the first idea for something leaning into the sci-fi aspect of the series, and the second idea for something leaning into the fantasy aspect.

Also: Onyx Prime's Tryptych Mask gave him the ability to see all life. When he joined to aid the Allspark in forging bodies, he likely assumed the humanoid form would best suit their needs, much like how Primus made them humanoid. But he didn't restrict the species to one type. That is why we got so many types in RID2015

I honestly believe (in the aligned continuity at least) that because cybertron and earth are twin planets, humans may have convergently evolved to have similar traits as cybertronians or vice versa, though there are still plenty of differences between the two

You're right, in a manner of speaking. Cybertron is the shell of Primus, their lifegod and defender of the universe. Earth was made from Unicron's body as it accumulated debris and other things, eventually creating life. Primus and Unicron are specifically stated to be omniversal-level beings, no matter what happens, if they die in one universe they simply move to another. And in many incarnations, they share a mind-link, they know exactly what each other is doing at any time. So in various literal and metaphorical ways, both planets are siblings.

EDIT: _(Oh shoot, first of all I have to say, awesome video as always! I enjoy your content very much, I really enjoy your videos about Cybertronian society and culture. :DD)_ That's something that kinda bugs me with Transformers... As a space enjoyer, there would be many aspects of Cybertronian culture and lifestyle that would LOGICALly be very different. In some continuities, Cybertron is bigger than Earth, meaning they would evolve to be low-land creatures who mainly thrive by taking nutrients on the planets surface. In some continuities, Cybertron is smaller than Earth (Like G1!), meaning they would've evolved to be thin and slender beings, or straight up just live in the skies as flying creatures. This is while keeping in mind that, as mentioned here in the comments, that Cybertronians may not even look human or humanoid! As they are fictional characters created by HUMANS, for us to feel and relate to them, they had to had to be personified. Imagine an organic Optimus Prime that looks like a flippin' Jellyfish!! Y'know, maybe the Bayverse Decepticon designs were on to something... I'd say that the easiest way to explain this (assuming Primus is oit of the picture), is that through convergent evolution, that somehow Cybertronians _just happened_ to evolve like earth-native creatures such as humans and animals, and _coincodentally_ having developed similar cultures to us. Oh well, that's fiction for ya! It would be cool to see someone draw or depict more accurate and _alien_ Transformers, lol.

I disagree with people saying they shouldn't have gender, because the way I see it its just more body types for them, not "gender" in the way most people see it. The only thing I don't like about it are when they do lipstick and oversized lips, but that's an annoyance that every kind of animation tends to do.

1:09 hell yeah the fabrication machine gets an appearance! All and all I do agree its fine for transformers to be as earthly and humanoid as they are on the whole. Though I have ended up appreciating the chances they take with less human looks, like with some of the bayverse decepticons being very insecoid like with one even having a big wheel in place of legs, or circular beaky mouths. I’d be interested to see what some sort of spec evolution artist might do with their take on transformers even if they were inorganic beings.

Personal belief of mine that, at least in continuities like IDW, the reason cybertronian society is so similar to human society is because one was, even in-universe, modelled after the other. Continuities where they were here for millions of years - even if in stasis - like G1? Human society was unconsciously modelled after Cybertron's. IDW? Well, cybertron would need some kind of society after the war; why _not_ the one planet they didn't kill?

@sergeantwasp60182 жыл бұрын
This is why I like the Bayverse designs, sure, they have the general silhouette of a humanoid, but look at them, they look nothing like a human, besides Drift and Crosshairs, but I hate those guys, so they don’t count. People always rag on Bay’s designs because they look like, and I quote “hobbled together garbage heaps”, but that’s what I like about them. They look like aliens, not cartoonish robots or humans in mech suits. Take Devastator for example, besides the *E N E M Y S C R O T U M* looks like a giant, mechanical, abomination (actually, now that I think about it, the whole meme adds to that). G1 Devastator looks like, transforming robot, but big and asymmetrical. Megatron (the design from the first three movies, you know, the good ones) is another good example, he has a very weird look, hands that have way too many thin, skeletal, gangly fingers and in RotF a very asymmetrical body shape. The Twins, Skids and Mudflap have weird uneven bodies and very not humanlike heads and faces. And of course there’s also to thousands upon thousands of the Decepticon soldiers, who look animalistic and have all sorts of weird spikes jutting out of their heads.

Here's my headcanon: the Transformers have humanoid forms and mannerisms because they're shapeshifters. The Cybertronian vehicle modes are their natural form: they adopted humanoid shape after encountering humanoid aliens eons ago (it seems to be the most common shape for organics in Transformers fiction), and they adopted specifically *human* mannerisms after encountering humans, and Earth vehicles after encountering Earth vehicles (we know this part already) Take Unicron for instance: my belief is that he was a planet, and had always been a planet, *until* he encountered Megatron. This is also why the inhuman Transformers tend to be Decepticons (especially in the Bayverse, but to an extent in other continuities), because they outright reject that they need to be human-like. It also explains Sky Lynx--he's got such an ego, he believes his original form to be the superior one, and refuses to take a humanoid form
@LaenayaSathe2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. Tho I'll say that when they go too human it annoys me. I think it'd be great to have TFP but more alien tendencies, cultural norms, language, and more without losing those features that make them relatable. One of the few things about the Michael Bay movies I enjoyed was the alien aspect they played up. Sound design and hearing Cybertronian out loud and seeing their sigils. If Hasbro ever grew a spine for content that the portion of their audience who have watched this stuff since childhood and are now a bit older and can handle more complexity and nuance, I'd love to see a TFPlike series that leans into the alien. They have plenty of ideas in fanon to pull from to start. I'd also love to see an actual two sided war. One where Megatron seeks to establish a monarchy and Prime fights for democracy, both with problematic ideals, and the cultural differences between factions because of where the majority of them came from before the war, and perhaps because of the war. I dunno. I love Transformers so much and TFP in particular (this many years later!) that I just think there are so many more interesting, alien things and gray areas I'd like to see explored. Preferably without losing the charm of a young adult series (I don't need blood and gore and drugs for example to bring make a story more complex.).
@gialanamoon50942 жыл бұрын
Sooo two things: 1) yeah, they look human, cus they were designed by humans!😄 2) Bayverse attempted to make the Transformers more alien, and people HATED it. I personally loved it, if not for the story, but for the designs, because aliens should look effing ALIEN. But I was in the minority saying so. Sooo we complain when TFs are too human, and we complain when TFs aren’t human enough. 🤷🏻♀️ In sci-fi, aliens are given human features to make them more relatable to the audience, the audience being human, and humans naturally wanting to see themselves represented on screen to tell us why we should care. Too alien, well, alienates us, but not alien enough makes it seem hokey and contrived. It’s a difficult balance to strike for sure.

The human functions they had that always got me is when Transformers gasp/cough/choke - they don't breathe, why would being held by the neck cause them to struggle for air or why would they cough and splutter when wounded? We know why of course, because it'd be weird if a Transformer was on the brink of death from multiple gunshot wounds and is oozing energon all over the ground and instead of speaking in a raspy voice, fighting for every breath, they just sound like a Speak 'n' Spell with a low battery. I would argue is because transformers started out originally as a Japanese mecha series, which is a genre that has humanoid like robots so there's your explanation. It's not bad thing as long their don't like too human as in anatomy as stuff it's fine. You know the writers could've of written an origin which further explains the humanoid look like for example the transformers were robots built by humans but has because sentient due to them being built from an alien metal which explains why their living organism so their began building their own world which is cybertron as we know it. Like if i'm not a big fan of human looking aliens i would just watch a different franchise.

If transformers weren’t mostly humanoid it would be even more difficult to relate to them and be invested in their story. They already start out as robotic aliens that disguise themselves as cars, planes or everyday technological objects. But if you do want more alien transformers then watch the vehicons from Beast Machines. Admittedly they still have quasi-humanoid forms but it was about as consistently alien as these guys would get.
