What happened to Dion (updated): Dion was rebuilt as white version of Optimus Prime, similar to the original Ultra Magnus toy. He later joined the Elite Guard and received partnership with Magnum. Sometime later both Dion and Magnum were fatally wounded by Megatron. Optimus Prime brought wounded Dion and Magnum to Alpha Trion. He said that he can save only one of them. Alpha Trion's scanners said that Dion is still alive, but Magnum has already died. Alpha Trion rebuilt Magnum's dead body into a suit of armor and merged it with Dion in order for him to survive, creating in process Ultra Magnus.

This is basically the version Most are going with - it's Dion's memory banks & personality profiles combined with Magnum's old body parts that were resculpted into a new armor design, thus creating the Autobot UltraMagnus.

I always thought Dion was rebuilt as Ultra Magnus. They always kept Optimus and Magnus with a similar look and their friendship goes deeper than their mutual hatred for the decepticons

My view (inspired by something I read years ago but cannot remember where) is that Dion became Ultra Magnus. There is a line in the G1 episode 'War dawn' from Alpha Trion that he will use the schematics he created for Optimus to rebuild the others. For me this led to Dion being rebuilt as a physical twin to Optimus (but white). He was later critically injured again in combat and the Ultra Magnus armour which had originally been intended as a battle suit for Optimus was fused to Dion to save his life and forever after it would be his permanent body. It also allowed that in the movie he survived being torn apart by the Sweeps, as the core of his body was at the centre of the armour and left undamaged, it was just the shock of the trauma that had sent him into stasis lock until the Junkions put him back together. Okay, so every fan has their own interpretation and I don't expect everyone to suddenly say- "yes, that is the version I am going to believe". Just another theory expanding on something I heard before, but it works for me.

You almost have it. Actually the Armor was intended for Dion because he was hurt worst than Dion or Ariel. All three are made from the very same Schematics. Plus the Ultra Magnus toy was made around this time frame and For these episodes. They decided to put the toy on the shelf and brought it back out as apart of the movie. So if you piece everything together you can clearly see that ONLY Dion could have been Ultra Magnus.

I think it's a similar situation to Cyclonus, where Ultra Magnus consists of both Dion and Magnum. Perhaps Alpha Trion couldn't save Magnum's spark but Dion's body was to damaged to survive, so Alpha Trion transferred Dion's spark into Magnum's body, upgraded with Dion's spare parts.

HouseholdWheel well in tf the movie unicorn makes and says "cyclonus and his own model/clone" which correctly shows cyclonus and his twin but we never see the twin model clone again.

it was because they changed the script but Orson Wells had already recorded all of his lines and he couldn't come back to re record the line. If you take the line less literally Cyclonus' "Armada" could refer to all of the sweeps including Scourge. It's just a small continuity error.

I forgot that when the Autobots crashed on earth, millions of years passed before they were revived in our 80s TV show time-frame. So to know that Optimus had been created over 9 million years ago, makes sense in the time line. As for the other parts of the stories, I didn't remember it much, but this video was a great summary and analysis of what's going on.

I just thought of something that supports this theory for G1 When Optimus didn’t have the matrix he didn’t change size because he was rebuilt from Oryan Pax. When Hot Rod was in possession of the Matrix he became bigger because he wasn’t rebuilt to become Rodimus Prime. When Galvatron was in possession of the matrix he didn’t change size because he was rebuilt. Whenever Ultra Magnus possessed the matrix he didn’t change size. When rebuilt transformers in possession of the matrix don’t get resized. Which proves that Ultra Magnus is Dion because Dion was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus.

My favorite theory, and this is an unconventional one - I like to believe Dion was rebuilt into Devcon, the Autobot bounty hunter. Nothing like a near death experience at the hands of Megatron to want to give you a mad on and lifelong purpose to bring all Decepticons to face justice. It's what I would do if I were Dion. Devcon is sufficiently similar to Dion in his paint scheme as well. Even their names are similar.

I even took it for a fact, for some reason, and never questioned it until I watched this video and realized it was actually as open a question as the true origin of Cyclonus. Wow, love the video, but this question is a bomb waiting to explode. As the original writer and subsequent "ask Vector Prime" stated, Dion was supposed to die. Ariel is the only other confirmed survivor, and both required extensive reconstruction in order to survive. As far as the comic goes, I would have to question its canon, or if it is the same timeline. If it is a separate, but similar time line to the G1 cartoon, then Dion could have died and been rebuilt at the same time, depending upon the timeline. That is just a theory, though would love to hear your thoughts. Great video, keep up the good work.

Obviously you have NEVER listen to what the Arielbots said to Alfa Trion. They said when the brought prime to Alfa Trion that there were others ( Arial and Dion) that needed repairs. This isn't hard to comprehend. There was no Vector Prime!!!!!!!!! There was no Mugnum either in the original G1 series. Dion became Ultra Magnus!!! The Ultra Magnus toy was made somewhere around this timeframe. Be they changed to release date til after the Scrammble city and Movie were released.

I know that scene very well. However, koolmoe, what you don't seem to get is that what is in question is what happened next. Arial and Dion were badly injured when the Arielbots brought Orion Pax to Alpha Trion. They were left there at the warehouse while Orion Pax was rebuilt into Optimus Prime. Only after Prime emerged were repair drones sent to retrieve them. The writer of this G1 episode stated that Arial and Dion were supposed to die to impress upon Prime the horrors of war. Arial was given a reprieve by Hasbro, but the G1 cartoon never gave sufficient evidence to confirm that Dion or any other worker survived Megatron's attack. Later works based off of G1 introduced the character Magnum, which fueled speculation that he would be rebuilt into Ultra Magnus. However, Hasbro's official stance, as stated by the "Ask Vector Prime" series, is that Dion died in the attack, whether initially or due to his injuries.

I always consider Ultra Magnus to be Optimus Prime brother, so after Wings of Honor I made this theory, Dion was Orion Pax best friend, but after Megatron attacks his body was too damage and his spark need a new body, Magnum spark was also heavily damage after the Combaticons betrayal, but his body was still functional, so when Alpha Trion saw them he choose to fuse both Sparks into a single entity and made several upgrades to Magnum body, the result was an Autobot with the best combat capability only second to Optimus, but with a more dedicate personality, after all they were created by the same bot just at different time

I can agree like someone stated earlier that it can be a deal like Cyclonus and Ultra Magnus is a combination of both. One thing is certain with the episodes like this one with Orion Pax, Ariel, and Dion, as well as some others, throughout G1 that touched on a little on the history of the Transformers I think it would be awesome if they would, instead of dong what they are now, make a prequel Transformers cartoon. Since it would be following the original cartoon mythos have it show how and why the Quintessons built Cybertron and build up to the rebellion that drove them from Cybertron for one season. Then the next season could show the peace and some of the politics involved with how each side became Autoboots and Decepticons as they started to become divided with it building into the start of the Great War for another season or two. Of course fans might not be happy having them non transforming until they get to the point where they developed the ability to transform. That is a part of the mythos though. Then they could close it out with a season or two showing the Matrix coming into play and showing some of Optimus's early years as leader of the Autobots showing some of the battles during the war on Cybertron. To end it I think it might be cool having it end with the building of the Ark and fade to black as they begin their prep to launch to leading into the first episode of the original series. I know the comics have expanded on the mythos but I think an animated version of it would be so great. I will say from season 2 and season 3 those were my favorite episode the ones that showed the Transformers history rather it contradicted at times or not.

Makes sense that Alpha Trion would have a body like Optimus Prime's laying around since he built Prime in the first place. Take Dion's spark and throw it in that body cuz Dion was pretty much a vegetable. That way Hasbro is right because Dion wasn't rebuilt. Orion wasn't just thrown into a new body his old body was used to create a whole new one. Magnus had a perfectly good body so he got used as armor making Dion not Dion anymore and more like an ultra Magnus. Good name.

This could be true. We have never bore witness to G1's Great War as far as the cartoon serie was concerned. Only the aftermath or the events just prior to the war erupting We have no idea who this Ultra Magnus really is or was. He may well have been constructed from Dion or just from scratch. Dreamwave paint Ultra Magnus as being Optimus' "Brother" even going to far as to base his appearance off the G1 toy. (A white Optimus Prime who wore Apex Armor) He was of the same design and wore his armor to increase his speed and strength on the battlefield because he felt he could never match his "brother" in battle and he wanted Optimus to respect him as a powerful warrior for peace.

@Protocol Infinity Alpha Trion rebuilt heavily wounded civilian grade autobots into military grade autobots that could match standard decepticon strength and size. Optimus & Ultra Magnus are military grade so Dion is likely Ultra Magnus. Ironhide at same level as Ratchet that is civiian grade.

@Protocol Infinity Orion Pax after rebuilt into Optimus was mad at Megatron for killing his girlfriend although she is revived. Optimus wanted to destroy Megatron so that there won't be other innocent bots being harmed or killed. Cybertron war started as a coup by army general Megatron that seized power by killing his Cybertron leader destroying most of the military loyal to cybertron leader. Megatron's new army and ruling party named as decepticons. Remnants of military loyal to fallen leader formed Autobots led by sentinel prime. The civilians that find the decepticons treating them badly or being harmed by trigger happy Megatron eventually joined autobots to overthrow the tyrant government. Orion pax joined autobots after being revived by Alpha Trion realizing the decepticons are bad and kill for fun. G1 series storyline incomplete or some story mismatched. The 3 saved by alpha trion storyline can be made into another series in fact but didn't get to due to Hasbro's decision to introduce new toys by killing off season 1 casts. It is now up to Travis or anyone else willing to make spinoff that would focus on Megatron's coup and Orion Pax movies.

@Protocol Infinity g1 tf caters for children therefore they can't have killing in the cartoon. Only in tf movie that many G1 characters being killed off so that Hasbro could make business on new toys with season 2. In reality, decepticons are like tyrant Japanese imperial army that would rob, rape, torture, assault, dismember and kill anyone they like. Sentinel Prime probably killed by Megatron not long after Alpha Trion rebuilt Orion Pax, which is why he made military grade Optimus Prime the new leader of autobots.

I have always wondered this question myself, and honestly I don't know. I guess he did die since that is what both David Wise and Hasbro has stated. The stories made by Fun Pub have always been questionable as to if they are official canon or not, or perhaps just a alternate timeline made to give a backstory to all their exclusives. But out of all the options from the animated series, I would have to say Ultra Magnus, only because of that line from The Movie, but I still am not really sure if he survived at all.

You know I'm surprised in any of the newer continites this hasn't happened. A largely expected idea is that Megatron isn't the original leader of the decepticons, The Fallen or Megatronus is the first leader. What if Dion and Orion Pax, two best friends are admires of the decepticons, loving to here stories of there battles and flight cabilites. Here they mostly retain the character feutures we know of, Orion is optimistic, dreaming one day he could fly and Dion is mostly down to earth, liking the decipticons for there prowess in battle. But you could also put a divide in there. Orion wants Cybertron to be equal, and free, while Dion thinks that the strong and brave should rule and use resources as needed, no matter the cost. This is where The Fallen attacks, and a fire fight breaks out. Orion and Ariel are brutally wounded, but Dion manages to keep fighting, loosing bits of his body and armour in the process. As he crumbles down, still trying to fight, Megatronus is impressed by what he sees, not just another soilder, but this time, a weapon. Similar to how Alpha Trion repairs Orion Pax into Optimus Prime, Dion is built by Megatronus to be the perfect weapon for him, an arm in his own image. He strips away the remaining bits of Autobot, leaving a silvery shell and fixes a gun to Dion's arm. And to top it off, he erases all of Dion's memories, leaving only his ideology. But as Prime arrives to defeat Megatronus, he recognizes Dion, just as Dion arrises and aims his gun. Optimus tries to reason with Dion, but all Dion does is kill Megatronus, proclaims himself the leader of the decipticons, and begins a conquest of cybertron, renaming himself after the being who rebuilt him, Megatron. How awesome would that be, not only does it keep the general origin story, but it also would make transformers so much more dramatic. Optimus prime is pretty much forced to fight his best friend till the end of time.

Here's my theory: I believe the comics with Dion are canon, mainly because if you look closely at the scene where he "dies" (heavy quotes) you can see he gets shot more closer into the shoulder, normally a non fatal wound (unless your brawn, not sure how the toughest mini car died to a single shot to the shoulder) but I think when Dion and magnum died, they both became ultra magnus due to the fact that he's taller then magnum and Dion and the "old freind" line. But hey thats just a theory, A TRANSFORMERS THEORY! (sorry just had to make the joke)

Know it's not clearly not canon here or it might've been in one of the comics, but I always liked this one story I heard about Optimus's origins. Basically during the height of the Cybertron war, Optimus was an Medic/Ambulance rescuing who he could with others until the war took its toll. The leader of the autobots at the time was covering Optimus whilst he transported a wounded squad away to where they were evacuating the wounded, but they heard no word from the leader and basically had to retreat the battlefield soon as no one was in any shape to fight, Optimus refused and went back to search for the leader. He found him eventually cornered, shot up and broken, Optimus managed to ambush the attackers and get the leader out, but was too far away from base when the leader asked him to stop. With no one else around he was given the matrix of leadership and it accepted him. The only reason I figured this was canon for years is because of his final words with Ultramagnus saying "I'm not worthy" "Nor was I" To me it kinda said alot about Optimus, and it really fits the whole part of the movie where he goes in alone desperate to save Autobot City. He always put others before himself, no matter the cost.

Doesn’t anyone realize Dion became Roller. He was too damaged to repair so Alpha Trion put what was left into Roller and that’s why Prime is so concerned when Roller is blown up in a cave in an early episode.

Hasbro's never going to conclusively answer this the way, even if their answer SEEMS conclusive, the way they'll never directly answer which Decepticon became Skywarp. And like how most believe that Skywarp is Cyclonus since it makes way more thematic sense than Bombshell, whose only argument for him is the obvious glaring animation error, most of us here, myself included, like to think that Dion is at least part of Ultra Magnus, physically and/or personality-wise. Other than that, i'm going with Julia D's idea below, with the extra detail that Dion's white Optimus form isn't exactly the same as his old friend, accounting for the different aesthetics that the Siege and Kingdom versions, and even the Perfect Effect Core Magnus version, have in contrast to their corresponding Optimus Primes. He's not a straight up white recolor, as opposed to the Seekers, Vanettes, or Datsuns.

Dion didn't die. You have to watch the " War Dawn " episode and know that the Airielbots went back to get Dion. Alfa Trion said that he first had to see if the Plan would be sucsessful. He base Elita and Ultra Magnus new bodies from Optimus Primes blueprint.

In my head canon, Dion was rebuilt into Hot Rod but never remembered he was at one time Dion. Optimus never knew because A3 didn't want him to treat him differently so that he could learn and grow into a leader on his own and become Rodimus Prime.

I think Dion is Ultra Magnus. it would explain why his inner white shell looks like Optimus. Not only that, Dion was a transporter, and so is Ultra Magnus. The scene when Optimus hands the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, calling him "old friend" pretty much proves it to me. Dion is Ultra Magnus.

I think that in G1 cartoon Dion was rebuilt into his form from the comics and like in the comics, he joined the Elite Guard, but later he was mortally wounded along with another member of the Elite Guard named Magnum by Megatron. Optimus brought both Dion and Magnum to Alpha Trion, he said that he can save only one of them. Alpha Trion investigated Dion and Magnum's damaged bodies and realized that he cannot save Magnum but he can save Dion. He transplanted Dion's Spark into Magnum's body and upgraded it with Dion's parts, creating in process Ultra Magnus, who had Dion's mind, personality, spark, and memories, and Magnum's look but more different from the original Magnum's look.

I always like to say the Autobots that (like Thottlebots and future Headmasters, Clones, and etc) were upgraded Paradrons. I believe Cerebros did get upgraded thus the reason he is still a pacifist. The Movie and early season 3 Autobots most likely joined up with thr Earth Autobots sometime in the 90s.

jay biggs I have an answer for the season 2 characters I believe all Of them say for omega supreme he just heard they were on earth and came to earth the rest of them cosmos, perceptor, tracks, blaster, warpath exedra were in the ark when the autobots left cybertron in the first episode they were just not shown when they woke up on earth the season 2 characters were badly injured they needed to be in stasis for 1 year when hound got hurt in the first episode they had grapple come and help haul him up and cliffjumper called him hauler by accident yeah I think hauler doesn’t exist it was grapple and cliffjumper called him by the wrong name then in 1985 the season 2 characters were fully recovered and out of stasis thus leading into the dinobot island 2 parter

I think Ultra magnus is Dion And Magnum, but they were combined into 2 bot, Dion being used as the internal structure, and the brain, and magnum being used as the body and deffence systems
