I’m new to the whole voice acting thing, but one thing that’s for certain is everyone has their own unique voice and range to go with it. I hate my natural voice, but I throw on an accent or impersonate Megatron or Starscream, I realize just how fun it is and the potential people can have. Should impersonations be the new norm in an official setting? No, at least not yet. So for now, let Cullen voice Prime as long as he wants. But there will never be a true replacement.

I think Seige and Earthrise prime sounds like Orion Pax from the Prime series. Orion had a innocent at odds quality like Netflix Prime. My nephew and his friends don’t know the difference between the voice actors except animated. They just think Bumblebee sounds sad or mad in Seige and Earthrise but they still think it’s Bee. My nephews are different age groups. One has a hundred toys the other has only two. I personally like the emotion and youngness that Foushee brings to Prime.

Love is a hard word. I definitly liked it. It had characters with actual character. The Plot was steady. And like our dear TFA fan already said, interesting concepts. But I have one glaring issue with it (granted many modern shows have this issue, but thats not my point). I really disliked its short runtime, in comparison to its story. There were so many concepts, Plot points and characters which were heavily underdeveloped. Sky Lynx was an interesting character, yet he died in the same episode he was introduced in. Galvatron only had 5 minutes of screentime. The entire story of a dying Cybertron is neglected to a second grade side story after the second episode. Keep in mind, this is supposed to be Hasbros next big thing, and it encompasses only 6 hours after 2 *seasons* . The story is already in its third act. TFP had a runtime of 17 hours after its second season, TFA had a runtime of 10 hours after its second season. If this was just some small story like Robots in Disguise, Cyber Mission etc. then I wouldnt mind, but its presented as Hasbros next big TF project. Im getting some Combiner Wars vibes, only with a better story.

I'll just sum up my thoughts: I'm not against other people doing their own unique takes on the legendary Autobot Leader or ANY character for that matter. Gary Chalk and David Kaye are proof of that. If had had the chance to voice Optimus Prime in an official Hasbro production I would be over the moon and Jake Foushee I'm sure felt the same way and I think he has the ability to make Optimus his own but he has to stop trying to imitate Peter Cullen because he's not him and shouldn't try to be. What pisses me off is the POLITICS that lead to him getting the role. I know going non-union is cheaper but something as treasured as the Transformers franchise and particularly when making an animated trilogy you want to appeal to both new and old fans you HAVE to being your A game and pull out the big guns. That means getting Cullen and Welker for Optimus and Megatron, Chalk and Kaye for Primal and Beast Wars Megatron, Scott McNeal for Dinobot, etc. Again, I have no hate for Foushee and I'm happy that he gets to voice his childhood idol, I would feel the same way! My problem lies strictly with Hasbro.

First off... THANK YOU! I have heard a lot of people talking about this subject but they're clearly not well educated on the subject and just blame the voice actors. Jon Bailey has even been harassed on the TFW2005 forums where he's a member because of his work on Transformers. Some people completely misunderstood and misrepresent what Peter Cullen said in that clip and use that to place the blame on Jon. Jon Bailey has actually met Peter Cullen before and Peter had said that he LIKED Jon's impression of Optimus but the later interview after the Bumblebee movie seems to contradict what he had said before that when taken out of context. (And believe me a lot of the members there LOVE to take things out of context to use against other members.) I hate when people go on and on about how the voice actors are just terrible when they're really not. You clearly recognize that they have talent and that's not the main problem. So again, THANK YOU! Secondly... honestly I think the problem is the voice direction. Even when Peter Cullen himself was doing the voice in the first 5 Transformers movies and in Prime he sounds stiff and wooden. That just seems to be the way Optimus has been directed. It's not the actor's fault and I don't think it has anything to do with acting vs. Impression either. Pretty much every Optimus Prime voice actor in the entire history of Transformers has sounded like a Peter Cullen impression. Some better than others. The only exception is David Kaye in Animated and I don't think he works as Optimus Prime because of it. I love David Kaye, he's a talented voice actor but fun fact, he original auditioned to play Primal in Beast Wars but Garry Chalk got the part instead because he sounds more like Optimus. Despite not even being the same character, the show literally calls out that Primal is a descendant with the same name they still wanted someone who sounds more like Optimus. Hearing how David Kaye would of played in in Animated, cause Animated and Beast Wars from a writing perspective are both very similar characters, he's not the leader of his entire faction but rather the captain of a small crew of misfits, so I imagine David Kaye is playing Animated Optimus exactly how he would of played Optimus Primal based on those very similar descriptions. Despite being a younger version who isn't an experienced leader I still expect to hear that deeper more Optimus sounding voice. Garry Chalk by the way, doesn't even try to sound like Peter Cullen, they cast him because he just naturally sounds very similar. Which also allows to focus more on acting the part and less on making sure he keeps the same voice cause that's just how he naturally sounds anyway. You can actually tell based on Jake's performances that there is something going on with the voice direction. The reason I say this is because Rescue Bots Academy was recorded the same time as Cyberverse, he voices Optimus in BOTH SHOWS however Academy sounds SO MUCH BETTER than Cyberverse did. Despite having the same actor doing both performances one show sounded better than the other and you know what isn't the same between the two shows... The voice director. Rescue Bots Academy also had a different voice actor in the first 2 episodes leaving Jake to have to impersonate a different actor impersonating Peter Cullen. He also sounds totally different in the War for Cybertron trilogy. How does 1 guy voice three different iterations of Optimus Prime and make it sound like 3 different people are doing the voices? Different voice directors. Rescue Bots Academy seems to alternate between Ray Quigley and Pete Slattery. Cyberverse has Ehud Landsberg, Jean Texier, and Robert Cullen (no relation to Peter Cullen). The War for Cybertron Trilogy just has Takashi Kamei who worked on every episode. I will add that the War for Cybertron trilogy is where Jake sounds the WORST as Optimus Prime. It's also ironically where he sounds THE MOST like a Peter Cullen impression. Cyberverse started out rough but Jake actually sounds better in later episodes of the series because he made that version of Optimus his own take on the character that works in his range. At the beginning of the series it does sound like he has no idea how he's playing the character. I think because they were trying to get him to make it his own and not rely so much on the impression. Rescue Bots Academy is like the prefect balance between the two and honestly I think where he sounded the best right from the start. Those directors are fantastic. Cyberverse was a bumpy start, kind of a learning curve but they got there eventually. And the War for Cybertron trilogy... I just don't know what the hell they were doing. I'd also like to point out, the unions themselves screw over their own actors. The whole point of having a union is suppose to be so you can get more work as an actor but they usually end up working less because there are jobs they're NOT ALLOWED to take if they're in a union. I've known some actors who will work non-union jobs anyway under a different name. Obviously I can't give their names away because they'd get into huge trouble if the union found out. Union actors are suppose to make more money except that you have to pay union fees so you end up with LESS money than if you never joined the union in the first place. Non-union actors can work anywhere, union employers only have to hire X amount of union actors which is a percentage of the cast so even in a union production there are still non-union actors. The only real benefit of joining a union is ensuring that you actually get credit for any role you're in. I've been screwed over and not properly credited in the past and it still annoys me. I never joined a union because of the fees and other restrictions. The rules are just crazy and honesty hurt actors more than help them. I should also mention that the big name Hollywood actors that get cast in movies all the time... those are the only people that actually benefit from unions. They make enough money that union fees are basically nothing to them and they have constant work flow because everyone knows their names. Voice actors like Peter Cullen no matter how much work they do the general audience will never know who the hell they are, crazy people like us know who he is but realistically Peter Cullen is not a name anyone outside a this fandom actually knows. That makes them expendable in the industry because they can much more easily hire an impersonator to do a similar voice and most people will never notice. In this instance being in a union actually hurts the actor because of the unions own restrictions preventing them from getting work. Unions in other industries help employees get paid better and get more benefits. Actors unions don't work that way unless everyone knows who you are. The whole thing is a big popularity contest, if no one's heard of you, you're better off never joining a union. Peter Cullen could still be getting work, and would ensure that he always gets work as Optimus Prime if he was non-union but because he's in a union Boulder Media who makes Rescue Bots and Cyberverse aren't allowed to hire him even if they wanted to. It's a non-union start up and they have to produce content for at least I think if I remember correctly 10 years or so before they can even hope to get union actors on their pay role. Rooster Teeth on the other hand actually started hiring union actors BEFORE they started working on the War for Cybertron trilogy. Some of the actors in the show are union because they actually have to hire X amount of union actors but they're using non-union as much as they're allowed to because they're still a cheap as hell Internet company. So yeah, it's not just companies trying to be cheap by hiring non-union actors, it's also the unions themselves having very strict rules over their actors. No one wants to be in unions anymore especially voice actors.

The other thing about G1 Like Optimus Primes, is not only is he a leader, but a "Dad" Like character. Other Prime's that are reinventions (RID, Primal, Animated) are not Team Dad characters and thus don't have that "Son... I want to talk to you about the Birds and Bumblebees" type of voice and personality, and don't need it. But a G1 style Optimus Prime still comes off that way, And the character needs a voice actor that can emote that way too.

I completely agree with the points about the voice acting.They seem to handicap themselves by trying to hard to be Cullen-esque. However, there seem to be some who do a Cullen Prime impression well as well as act ad convey emotion and tone, such as Bradley Frew’s voice work in JohnnyFlash’s videos. He sounds so naturally close to Cullen in his tone and inflections and yet can convey emotion and give a great performance that’s not wooden. That sounds like a good balance. But yes, they really should allow Peter to do as many Optimus projects as he would like and I’m glad to hear that it seems they have done this.

The trick to voice acting is matching the voice to the emotion. It's not just reading the line "I regret leaving the all spark" you have to act out the part, as though sad with regret, not bawling but with regret. Even though Transformers don't breathe, there are points of his breathing when doing Prime, for instance. But ion my fan films I have fallen out of character also, and have just delivered the right emotion, and sometimes not.

I am honestly convinced the franchise needs to allow new VAs to have new takes in these old characters, and I mean new takes, not "sound like X voice actor". I know that Peter Cullen is the best cause he created optimus based on his brother. but Peter Cullen has high age and I don't want to looks like I am already killing him but transformers is great brand and Peter wont be here for ever and fans must to get use to another voice actors. And yes this guy who acted optimus in wfc trilogy isn't perfect he still has much to learn but I wouldn't compare him with Peter Cullen because Peter Cullen is voice actor for decades. It is same like in g1 optimus prime was replaced with hot rod (rodimus prime), It is the hardest thing being someones shadow. So I want to hear Peter Cullen 's version of optimus but also I want to hear younger and different voice actors. especially when transformers are rebooted "every year" and studio is not able to create one continuity that wold go for years (decades).

they should do more things like Gary Chalk and David Kaye; both were unique takes on Optimus, while remaining in their own vocal range in order to bring that new flavor and expressiveness to the character. Peter Cullen will always be the definitive Optimus, but that shouldn't stop other interpretations of him, too. moreso, if you're going to want the voice of someone, without actually getting that voice, reevalutate your ethics.

I think the best take is Garry Chalk doing something similar but not exact. The Beast Wars Primal while obviously a different character entirely from prime still felt Prime like, and his actual Prime stuff from the Unicron trilogy still felt like Prime but didn't come off as doing a Cullen impression. Chalk did his own thing with prime but still made Prime still feel like Prime. So it's possible to do a prime that is reminiscent of Peter Cullen while not sounding like one is doing a Peter Cullen impression but falling short. Still can get the basic feeling but not a bad impression. I wouldn't mind seeing Chalk come back, I imagine he would be a bit cheaper then Cullen, but still probably be a bit not expensive then what they want to pay so I'm sure there are plenty of talented people that can do the same thing Chalk did, be close but still different enough.

I honestly wish they would take the Megatron approach with Prime, giving him different voices that still fit the spirit of the character. Jason Marnocha (voice in WFC) is AMAZING but he doesn't sound like Frank Welker Megs and that's ok. I'm scared to see peoples reactions to the Beast Wars characters voices in Kingdom because they've never really had other voices (aside from like 2 characters).

The big thing that makes peter Cullen the best optimus is his story of how he based the voice on his brother. And it was an inspirational story. But people trying to sound like peter Cullen don’t really have a true inspiration behind their performance

I admit, I didn't grow up with Peter Cullin as my Prime. I grew up with Garry Chalk as my Primal. But I will agree that Peter Cullin is Optimus Prime and no one can do what he does with prime. Hasbro needs to realize that.

When you said why Jetfire has blue eyes when he was a decepticon there are Autobots with red eyes and there are decepticons with blue eyes they're just made with different eye colors I guess blue and red and yellow are the most common though

Cullen did not play Prime in any of the Unicron Trilogy, (2002-2005), from Armada to Cybertron, so not 30 years, as for about a decade early in the 2000s he did not play Prime. He was not Prime in Robots in Disguise (2001) or Animated (2010) He was not him in the 90s Beast Wars/Beast Machines either. His coming back to playing Prime in 2007 was heralded as legend. He should have been Prime the whole time.

Old video so won't be surprised if no one sees this; all due respect to Peter Cullen but, David Kayes TFA Optimus Prime and, Garry Chalk as Optimus Primal are two of my favorite iterations of the Optimus character, I have zero problem with someone new voicing OP, it's this weird middle ground, game of telephone bullshit of Peter having to do an impression of someone doing an impression of him that NEEDS to stop, either pay the man/give him the respect he's due or, give some new talent some time in the spotlight

Not a big fan of both seasons but have hope for Kingdom. I am not cool with them replacing Peter or Frank they are the G1 voices and they need to pay them if they are going to use those models. I did love Bee but its a shame they have to cut corners for a company that big.

Peter Cullen is the only original voice of Optimus Prime. I met him once and he did not disappoint, he was kind and it was an amazing experience. We should demand a solo Prime movie. My suggestion would be the story of how he got the matrix of leadership. The path of the primes if you would be so kind, Hasbro? Or, perhaps, a movie of the original 13 primes covered in The Covenant of Primus? Hasbro should respect him and give him the freedom to do Prime as he wishes and put him on salary and Frank Welker too those guys are the main draw. Boycott it if they don't get Peter Cullen and Frank Welker too, that's how you start then do a petition.
