Transformers Masterpiece MP08 vs Studio Series 86 Grimlock review and comparison

Bought the MP Grimlock back when it was new and it’s been chilling happily with my CHUG collection ever since. Many figures have been replaced and updated, but that Grimlock is still the best version of the character we’re ever gonna get in my opinion.

I have the 86 Grimlock, and the combination of missing front teeth in dino mode, as well as missing sword and crown accessories, is really making me consider getting a Masterpiece Grimlock instead of buying a bunch of filler upgrade kits. And besides, an MP Grimlock would scale better with the other 86 Dinobots. What version of MP Grimlock would you recommend?

I got my MP I think back in 2009-2010, it was a Toys r Us exclusive at $59.99, only came with his sword, gun and a crown though. I skipped out on SS86 Grimlock because the MP just does not need an update in my opinion.

Was really wanting SS86 Grimlock but now he’s running for almost $200. Found the MP08 version new for $100 so ended up get him instead.

That's the problem I have too. The MP is way easier to get that the Studio Series. The g2 repaint is easy to get, and there's the comic style one coming out, but this specifically is impossible to find. Stinks too, cuz I'm not sold on the head wiggle gimmick the MP has. I'd rather have the normal swivel the SS has

For the cost of the plastic they used to make the Wheelie accessory, they could’ve added SS86’s front teeth lol.

Studio series is the BEST! the point of the studio series is for the accurate representation from the animated movie. Grimlock is supposed to have white arms and solid yellowish gold pieces. All the extra metallic bling is from the G1 toys. Cool gimmick, but I prefer the Studio Series Grimlock.

The MP was out of my price range, and I'm not that big of a Transformers fan to spend the money, but I love Grimlock. So I got the Studio 86 one, and it fits the bill. Thanks for sharing and see you in the next one! 😃

What's a shame is Hasbro makes better looking figures now but only goes about 80% to make them worth buying. Gaps and lack of accessories are part of just about every release. Who was the genius that thought that including this static Wheelie figure would be better than a sword or perhaps filling in some of those unsightly gaps?!

huh, never got MP Grimlock but I'm quite surprised how close they are in height. Does that mean that if they ever made MPs of the other Dinobots, would they be the same-ish size as SS86 Slug?

No. If takara made Mp scaled dinobots they would be larger than 86 and the original MP grim lock. They would scale with MP-44

I think the robot mode on the studio Grimlock is ok but the beast mode SUCKS. I can't stand the holes in the right side of the face, the missing teeth, or the dark chest window. I might get it to see if my POTP Grimlock can use the blaster.

If those are your only problems with it, their are loads of different upgrade kits you could find for the guy that cover holes, give him his front teeth/sword, and swap the chest peice. Just look up SS grimlock upgrade kit on ebay or general google and you oughta find somthing for fairly cheap

The funny thing is the MP version has those same screwholes on one side of the head and neck, but are filled in with filler pieces. There's a lot of similar engineering between SS and MP, but I'd say MP edges it out.

If I was filthy rich, I would be a purist and only fill my Transformers collection with the Masterpiece line. Thank goodness for the Studio Series line to create the next best thing for us commoners to afford, haha.

My only gripe with 86 Grimlock is that the shoulders should have sat a little higher giving it a less gorilla arm look in bot mode..

Did have the studio series 86 leader class grimlock but sold it only have slug and wreak gar. In rehab hospital recovering from Colon Cancer

@@ToyKennections thank you sir but unfortunately I was born 50 years ago with a whole in my heart and had open heart surgery when I was 4 years old and grew up fine until April of '06 got a blood clot which caused a stroke on my left side of my body went through 3 months of rehab to learn to walk talk and take care of myself and then on September first of '08 I didn't wake up that morning had a cardiac arrest which both my cat Nemo and my now ex wife Angy saved my life, which is a long story, but had surgery last month they removed the tumor growth in my Colon and now just trying to get stronger so I can Go back home to my apartment building in downtown Hamilton Ontario Canada. Good review. A suggestion from one enthusiast to another…. Let us not use euphemisms & actually call the bootleg items for what they are, counterfeit or a lil more PC, unofficial, NOT 3rd party/4th party. Hasbro is 1st party, retail stores are 2nd party, 3rd & 4th party are private citizens & private businesses re-selling Hasbro toys. OR if counterfeit, bootleg, & or counterfeit is too offensive, aftermarket is a proper substitute. Bootleg/aftermarket does not denote poor quality.

Glad you enjoyed the review, as it's a pretty old one and I sometimes have trouble watching my older videos. I mostly call things third party because it was a term everyone understood and used for unofficial TF, so it's easier to get the message across. Studio series is fantastic line for the most part, the same goes for masterpiece, both lines have ups and downs, for me its more both, its hard to lean towards.

Always said the MP Grimlock was way too small to be an mp scale and was actually a chug scale Grimlock considering how big the dinobots were when they first showed up in the cartoon and now that you have shown it next to the SS 86 Grimlock and they are practically the same size it looks like I was right.

For my G1 bots, I actually prefer white or grey plastic instead of silver... same thing with the gold parts with Grimlock here, I prefer the plain slightly metallic matte instead of the chrome. Basically I like the colors on my G1 bots flat.
