Living up to the 80's cartoon is a bit of a stretch. Nothing lives up to the 80's cartoon because it was the original idea, the source material from which everything else TF-related came from. The only piece of TF media that had as much thought put into it as the 80's cartoon did is Michael Bay's 2007 movie, because they spent many years and scrapped many ideas of how to reinterpret the robots on the big screen, eventually pretty much perfecting the formula and making one of the best action movies to ever exist.

Well in terms of iconicity of course not. G1 is something special for the people who were around when it came out but… it’s like Pokemon. Have you tried to play through red/blue after all this time? Have you actually sat down and tried to get really invested in a G1 episode. It hasn’t exactly aged the best, which again is to say nothing of its impact and if you grew up watching it obviously it would be your favorite version of transformers. But just like Pokemon, you have to acknowledge your bias and respect what came afterwards for evolving and innovating on the foundation the OG laid. You can admit something is an improvement but still prefer your version, it’s not an admission of defeat
