Fun little fact about the recording of Dinobot's final lines in "Code of Hero", while Scott McNeil was getting really deep and into his role of Dinobot's death, while he was recording his lines, the crew of the studio at the time couldn't help but snicker and laugh at what was supposed to be a very moving scene. So, the very second after he was done with his lines, Scott McNeil, enraged by the AUDACITY, yelled out to the crew IN CHARACTER as DINOBOT this little tidbit: "Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest is silence............DO YOU MIND!?!? I'M TRYING TO DIE HERE!!!!" What I wouldn't GIVE to have heard that. I remember being a young teenager watching Beast Wars. My dad used to tell me it was garbage etc etc. Randomly he sat and watched an episode with me one afternoon and of course it was "Code of Hero" of all episodes. He said he was blown away by it, the depth of the character and actions killing off someone on a kids TV show. He couldn't believe it. Remember the line to this day as it absolutely resonated with me as a young man. Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence. All those years later when the 1st film was announced and the first thing Dad asked me "Is Dino bot going to be in it?" Now that tells you everything about the character and his impact.

This and the sudden influx of anime having established characters... actually DIE really blew me away. I mean, G1's movie did that too and pushed a lot of boundaries, but mostly as a way to force the old toys out to make room for new ones. I guess that is what happened to Dinobot too, but the writers decided "No if he is going down he is going down swinging." In my own writing and roleplaying characters like Dinobot have had a huge influence on how a gray area character should behave. How to do a redemption arc. Or even how to make a villain likeable. They don't make them like that anymore. Not for a lack of trying. It was an interesting thing, back in the mid 90s. Instead of constantly recycling characters or reinventing them they would come up with new ones without disrespecting the old ones. The amount of respect Beast Wars had for its roots I think made it much, much easier for older fans to accept it. And why Beast Machines was rejected as hard as it was by a substantial chunk of the fanbase.

See, I've never interpreted the contemplated-suicide scene as being about guilt for his brief return to the Predacons; rather, I think it's him contemplating the only way he sees to escape the existential crisis he's in. Killing himself would be the ultimate act of self-determination, his proof to himself that the fate he met would be one HE chose, not the whims of destiny, one that he met by his own hand. Because that parallels with the realisation later in the episode that he IS free to choose his own future, and makes the choice he knows will kill him, dying for a noble selfless reason instead of a selfish one.

My personal headcanon for Dinobot II's turn to honor was that when Rampage's indestructible spark was destroyed it was an unstoppable force meets immovable object type thing and resulted in a tear opening up to the Matrix, which the original Dinobot used to enter Dinobot II and influence the latter's final moments. Rhinox brought Optimus Primal's spark back to life through a tear in a Matrix, so the theory has some precedence in the fiction, along with Dinobot II having flashbacks to moments that happened after Dinobot made the backup, so even if Dark Glass had happened it wouldn't have explained it completely.

Also, Code Of Hero is the best episode of the entire Beast Wars series and such a bittersweet ending to a character that we all know and love. Still made me shed a tear everytime I watched it 😭😭

I remember when code of the hero aired, I was a huge fan before beast wars, and as a teenager when this series aired (by mainframe no less, makers of another favorite show of mine reboot) I was excited beyond belief. seeing dinobot cut thru the predacons to get to the golden disc was so... profound, and only a few times that my beloved transformers has hit upon real feels 10/10 basics! thank you!

As always Chris, a great episode. It's great how through his honour bound code along with his love of battle that Dinobot's become of the most interesting characters the franchise has put out, in Beast Wars he's gone through a significant amount of change and because of that left a mark. Most recently it's good that the current comic and to a lesser extent the Kingdom cartoon has done something different with his character and defection.

I can safely say that Dinobot is one of my favorite characters in Beast Wars. I remember watching the episode "code of hero" on the old Hasbro website when I was 7 or 8 years old, I believe. And while I skipped through most of the episode and just HAPPENED to come across Dinobot's death, I still remember feeling SOMETHING. To me, his final words were the most meaningful of his quotes. It showed that he was at peace with his own death, and had no regrets.

Something I noticed recently was how Dinobot's death in the show mirrors Optimus Prime's death from the movie. Both head into battle against an overwhelming number of enemy troops, managing to take them all out before facing off against Megatron, both becoming badly injured to the point where they would die and both sacrificing their lives to prevent Megatron from gaining a significant win that would turn the tide in a war. Both also having a very memorable death scene where almost every line could be quoted. and both would end up being resurrected later on in their series to b used as weapons against their former allies.

Like everyone else, I loved Code of Hero as it is my favorite Beast Era episode and it nearly made me tear up the first time I saw it. I'm going to prefice this comment by saying I love Dinobot, Beast Wars was my introduction to the series so all of the characters hold a special place in my heart BUT I don't think he would have been the first in the hall of fame if we just had his character arc to go off of... there were plenty of well done arcs/side stories in Beast Wars aside from Dinobots (Silverbolt & Blackarachnia, Tigatron & Airrazor, Cheetor maturing, etc.) What made Dinobot stand out was how fun he was to watch while he was on-screen, if you took all the best action scenes in all 3 seasons of the show... how many of them would feature Dinobot partially or in full? I'd be willing to bet more than half of them. Dinobot even got a few good funny moments that you wouldn't otherwise expect from such a serious character. And this was slightly touched on in the video but Dinobots interactions with the other Maximals (particularly Optimus) was always fascinating to watch because he embodied many aspects of the other characters, like Cheetor he loved to be in the action, like Rattrap he challenged Optimus on multiple occasions (albeit for better reasons usually), he could be cold and calculating like Rhinox when the time called for it, and he shared an air of nobility with Primal (for different reasons admittedly)

For me personally, what got to me the most rewatching that scene was the reaction given by RATTRAP, of all possible bots. Despite the differences they always had over the time they had spent fighting together, Rattrap still ultimately came to value Dinobot as his comrade, and their interactions in the episode, Code of Hero, show this better than anything else: when Dinobot initially confronts Rattrap, the latter laments that despite his qualms with him, that at least at the end of the day, he knew where Dinobot stood, or so he thought, proving that Dinobot's recent return to the Predacon ranks had affected Rattrap and had begun to second guess if the former Pred could really be trusted. But then come the end of the episode, watching Rattrap let out a gasp of despair as he realized that Dinobot was about to die legitimately brought me to tears, as it confirmed that he actually had grown to care about Dinobot, let alone the fact that he was at Dinobot's side in his final moments and being the first one to offer a salute in his fallen comrades honor. Knowing this really puts into perspective why it would be Rattrap whom would be the one to attempt to restore Dinobot's memories if the episode Dark Glass ever did wind up getting produced, and it goes to show how complex of a dynamic the 2 bots had during the show, and it makes me appreciate both of their characters even more as a result
