I'm finally all caught up! I just binged watched every single episode of The Basics over the past week and now I'm here with my Hot Rod Targetmaster to watch this one!

The discussion around seven minutes in feels to be a big reason for why Targetmasters have never really become their own thing. Headmasters kind of beg for explanation because, well, it's a robot whose head can leave and walk around. It's very easy to end up brainstorming all kinds of reasons for why they'd want to do that. Maybe it's symbiotic, or maybe the head is the real brain and the body is just armor, and either way, it leads to tons of interesting story concepts. I generally prefer Japan-style Headmasters, but Scorponok's arc in Marvel could only happen by American rules. But a Targetmaster is just... a gun. Equipment. The most you can do with one is "he's a really strong gun or a really good gun." It's not a bad toy gimmick, it just doesn't spark the imagination as much. I do find it kinda funny how the Headmasters and Targetmasters went in different directions in terms of popularity. The most popular Headmasters (Chromedome, Hardhead, Nightbeat, Brainstorm, Fort Max, Minerva, Scorponok), are mostly Autobots, while the most popular Targetmasters (Needlenose, Misfire, Spinister) are pretty much all Decepticons. I was surprised when talking about the modern concept that you didn't mention that Titans Return's designers seemed to consider Titan Masters to be involved in the pattern. It's why Titan Master vehicles have weapon modes that incorporate the robot.

I think that the Titan Masters were not mentioned in the video because they need to combine with their vehicles to become weapons, they can't transform into weapons on their own.

I mean to be fair The Rebirth Part 3 touched on that idea when the Autobot Headmaster Nebulons seperated from their Autobot partners without warning forcing all of them in to their vehicle modes. The partnership was a strength and could also be a flaw. An example of a strength was also the debut of the 5 Autobot Headmasters vs the Decepticon force at the time. The Decepticons; namely Scourge believe they had the numbers advantage. Not quite when their head seperated and began opening fire while the Autobots in vehicle forms also opened up with attacks of their own.

My headcannon has always been (similar to the Dreamwave comics lore) that the targetmasters has their own spark and the weapon mode is fueled by that spark, thus making them more powerful than regular weapons. I also extend that to larger transformers with weapon-like modes, like Megatron in tankmode.

G1 Targetmasters (along with Headmasters and Pretenders) are where my toy collecting was at its peak. I still have Pointblank somewhere, maybe Triggerhappy as well, provided my nephews haven't destroyed them in the years since. Now I'm gonna have to rewatch the Headmasters cartoon. It was the same for me, especially with Fort Max. 1988 is where I jumped off with the toys. HM & TM went smaller, and even the new PM Prime wasn't enough to keep me interested. I still read the comics, but with no animated series I had no into in buying characters from the 1988 line. If only Hasbro had dubbed the Japanese episodes back in 87, 88, 89

Ever heard of the Powered Masters? They’re from the Japanese-exclusive series known as Transformers: Zone! The Powered Masters are the wielders of the mysterious Zodiac Power. They include Dai Atlas, the Autobot Supreme Commander at the time, Sonic Bomber, who can combine with Dai Atlas to form Sky Powered, and Roadfire, who can combine with Dai Atlas to form Land Powered. All three can combine to form Big Powered.

It's a good concept best demonstrated in animation by the show Swat Kats. While T Bone focused on piloting the Turbo Kat, Razor was free to focus on the weapons and other instruments. The same thing applies here. While the larger robot focuses on battlefield maneuvers their partner can focus on aiming and hitting the enemy within their range.

Nice video. I do see the Targetmasters as being more sensible and useful than the Headmasters. Guns that can assist in aiming while the user can concentrate on moving on the battlefield, potentially stronger blasts stemming from either the Targetmaster's energy/spark or the user and when not in battle the guns turns into minicons to help around.

I guess that Megatron and Shockwave are not considered Target Masters because they don't have a bond with a specific transformer. Megatron also has the ability to transform into different gun sizes while Shockwave can fly and fire himself in weapon mode, not needing a wielder.

Back in the 80s, I understood the concept of the Target Masters. If The Big Robot gets knocked out of hurt the Gun can still transform and help him. But the Headmaster never made sense to me, what is the point of your head transforming and the only thing the main body can do is stay in alt mode and can't really fight. Especially since they Headmaster Robots have humans in them!

An interesting concept that could be fun to explore. Imagine in the caste system that these were transformers that turned into tools for their larger kin, but as such were often treated as second class citizens since they were reliant on larger cybertronians for work. This led many to side with the decepticons who turned them into literal weapons that could function with or without wielders, or could even hack into and seize control of said wielders! It would explain a lot regarding their origins and partnership with larger bots.

Targetmasters made sense to use some existing characters, it was an easy way to fill the shelves, all you needed was to just take an existing figure and mold a new gun partner for them, cheaper then designing a new one.

in the TTRPG, The Bots that turn in into something that another must wield is a Origin called Armory Call, It cover any transformer that has a form that requires another to use them (Megatron), other wise if the bot could fire themselves (Galvatron) are any other Origin that would grant any alt mode. Target Master Have been added and you get Rig that a someone pilots and it turns into the Head, weapon, or Power thing of the 3 types of Masters.

Before learning the official backgrounds, it actually seemed like a logical Evolution for the toy line. We already had Transformers you could turn into a weapons like Megatron, so why not just make that a feature of certain subgroups? Unfortunately, it just seems like no one realized how to do it well as a story point. There were a few better options in the official backgrounds but those were always be more obscure ones like from dreamwave or tfcc. I'm still disappointed that, given the superhero based background of the Marvel Comics, let this wasn't used to take advantage of weaker super-powered humans. I mean, if someone had a weak energy emitting power, give them a cybertronian battle suit that maybe UPS their energy projection while making them stronger and more durable.

Another great video, been waiting for this. I was hoping you would clear up why the Action Masters were redefined as Target Masters, but I guess that was a marketing decision. I would point out that in the case of the Mini-Cons, while several Mini-Cons have weaponry modes, as far as I know all Mini-Cons have a robot and a vehicle mode, so the weapon mode is not as noticeable and many Mini-Cons weapon mode or not boost the weapons of the Transformers they power link too. I do have a question though. I think it was the Transformers Universe or Transformers Classics line (though I could be wrong) that introduced an Optimus Prime figure that had a Roller Mini-Con or Target Master figure. Is that an "official Target Master"? Thanks for another great video, can't wait for the next one.

The G1 Targetmaster guns being Nebulans never made sense to me, even as a kid. “Sure, I have nothing better to do with the rest of my life than be your gun” just seemed...weird? Them being other Transformers always seemed a better fit. It’s one of the few areas where the Headmasters show was better than the Marvel comic.

Surprised there was no mention of Animated Starscream becoming a double homage to Headmasters/Targetmasters when he's reduced to a _literal_ head in the season 2 finale (and remains that way until the "Endgame" two-parter.) Great video as always! I just wanted to know if you have heard about the new HasLab Unicron? It seems like there isn't a lot of advertisement for it, so there are only a few backers so far. I was thinking that maybe to help spread the news you can show if off briefly in the next video, before the time to back it ends. Also the term "Double Targetmaster" originated from the Earthforce series. I don't remember the exact issue but a few of the 84 Autobots were talking about how crazy things have gotten and mention a whole bunch of groups of "masters".

I actually got the Targetmaster Cyclonus from the universe line and can confirm he could "Target On!" With Nightstick. His hands flipped around from his boosters and there was a small tab on Nightstick that could fit into the booster. So you double do it with either hand.

You should be able to do it with his Generations Selects release, too. The standard WfCT Battle Master engineering allows for a fan mode where the handle points backwards instead of down, and Kingdom Cyclonus also does the hands to thrusters thing.

Love this series, it's always so informative and well presented. But I'm curious about something, which Transformers toy has been re-used/re-painted the most times?

Not certain, but if I had to guess it would be one of Starscream's toys. He typically gets a minimum of 2 repaints for Skywarp and Thundercracker, and has been slightly retooled to make Ramjet, Thrust, and Dirge. His classics design was eventually repainted/retooled to make all six of these counting himself, plus a repaint for Acid Storm. I couldn't even begin to count convention exclusive repaints on top of that.

Can we get a basics episode on Alpha Trion? I personally think his history as one of Optimus’s saviors and or mentor would be intriguing and interesting.
