Its interesting you say this feels so different from what you're used to with Darren Korb...my introduction to Korbs music was Bastion, with him and Ashley doing "Dig a hole/Build a wall" and "Mother, I'm here(Setting Sail)", which are both very soft, sad songs. Also Transistor is probably one of my favorite Supergaint games, right behind Bastion. Definitely should play it. Once you do, the story behind this song and its alter ego are heartbreaking. You should do the Digitized/Processed Version of this, "_n C_rcl_s" kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH7coHxjj8ZpsJo

Fun fact, in case nobody else has said this: Darren Korb and Ashley Barret recorded the soundtrack for Transistor almost entirely in Darren Korb's closet! They said during a concert that if you have some of the tracks turned up real high, you can hear bits of Darren's baby son crying.

Best part of _Transistor_ is, the player character, Red, is a singer. That's supposedly one of her songs in-story. She's got a huge beefy guy who's sweet on her who could easily act as a bodyguard...and he's offed before the story even begins, leaving her to wreak vengeance. Oh, and the art style seems heavily inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt, which lends it a beautifully-eerie feel.

One of the most interesting thing about Transistor is how songs like these change dynamically during gameplay. There's actually two variations of this song, one when you activate your plan(); ability, and the track becomes more muted and Red hums the lyrics instead to match how time has frozen around you. The second is a glitched out version where the boss you're fighting starts falling apart, and the song changes drastically into a distorted version of the original.

I remember reading an analysis of this song, in which the song itself is ABOUT Sybil, and how she tried so damn hard to get Reds attention, first as a matter of duty to the Camarata, and then out of a desire for her affection, which is what caused her in a jealous fit to spring the trap on Red and Unkn0wn. Its all very sad when you start putting things together. Red is the perfect example of a social butterfly...someone who soaks up attention and strings out peoples affections without committing to anyone in return. She strung Sybil along and it broke her, and it made it easier for the Process to take her.

@@Cryogenius333 I know I am sooooo late here But I have to say my take on this song in particular I've always thought this song was Red's message to Sybil, how Red wasn't the one who she was looking for But Sybil ended up taking it the wrong way, and just became even more attached to Red In fact there are a few things that even maybe hint towards Sybil potentially being Lesbian and having been in love with Red, and that might be one of the reasons she seemingly disliked Unknown so much Anyways, that's just my opinion that I felt like I had to share

Transistor is a game about voice in a way. The main character is a singer who, upon being attacked by this soul-absorbing weapon, loses her voice. Her significant other's consciousness is trapped inside the weapon, and helps her along as she confronts the people behind her attempted assassination and the downfall of her city. This game has a pretty insane soundtrack too -- basically every track in the game has three versions: With vocals, without vocals, and with humming.

Transistor's music is actually quite similar in this style throughout the game. Some are faster paced but they all follow the same general sound - like Hades did with theirs. Each of Supergiant's games have a specific set of music qualitites that you can identify them from instantly. The 8 bit quality you pointed out, makes that Transistor.

Absolutely adore how such a haunting melody is used for an intense boss fight. If I remember correctly, this is used when fighting a corrupted rival singer of the main character, someone jealous and manipulative. They had become a digital, virus-like entity that still retained anger for the main character. The best part about the music from Transistor though to me is how the tracks will corrupt and become digitized should you take damage. Almost as if to imply the main character is losing herself to the virus, as she takes more hits the music will digitize more and more. It's both terrifying a hauntingly beautiful to hear tracks break apart as you struggle to survive.
@Cryogenius333
@Cryogenius333 2 жыл бұрын
Sybil wasnt a rival singer, she was more of a pageant queen...the spearhead of the gameworlds social elite, an organizer, and a member of the games mysterious governing body, The Camarata. She was SUPPOSED to spy on Red I believe. Sybil fell for Red and effectively became her crazed fan, and when Red chose Mr Nobody, Sybil became desparate and sprung the trap, trying to transist Red...instead Mr Nobody pushed her out of the way and became trapped in the Transistor, and Sybil went mad before being taken by the Process.

If you want more Darren Korb / Supergiant, the Bastion soundtrack from 2011 is also fantastic in its own way. Korb calls the genre "acoustic frontier trip-hop". Some stand-out tracks are "A Proper Story", "Spike in a Rail", "Build That Wall", and "Mother, I'm Here".

Throwing another vote on the pile for "The Spine" or "Paper Boats" from the Transistor soundtrack; both of those are amazing. Great to see you continuing to work through SuperGiant Games' soundtracks, not that you need to be strong-armed into listening to anything Darren Korb has made!

Transistor was the first Supergiant game I've experienced and my god, what an experience it was. Absolutely wrecked me by the end of it. Every single one of Supergiant's entry is a masterpiece and the fact that every one of them are massively different in themes, design and storytelling while being cohesive is bonkers. And of course let's not forget Darren Korb's (and Ashley Barrett) genius!

God I got goosebumps the moment you started the song. Transistor is one of my favourite games of all time with a soundtrack that resonates with me on so many levels and an MC that I really vibe with. It's still my favourite Supergiant game which is saying a lot considering how incredible Hades, Pyre and Bastion are. Thematic vibes aside, the gameplay is super fun too, as it is in every Supergiant game. Their games are really just a perfect rhythm of audiovisual elements and awesome gameplay.

Transistor is such a good game! I'm also so happy that I played it on PS4. The Transistor's/sword's voice comes through the speaker in the PS4 controller and it adds a whole new level of immersion to the game. I highly recommend that you play this game! It's a short cyberpunk-esque game and the music is woven in really well. One of my favorite things to do in that game is to just hold down the hum button and listen to Red hum along to the music.

Supergiant are absolute darlings of an indie company. Each of their games tend to be pretty unique in soundtracks and storytelling while still being a fun game in their own right. Even Pyre, the game with the most unique playstyle among their games (it's basically a sports game!), are absolute gems. All their games go on sale pretty frequently too, so it's pretty dang easy to enjoy them for a price of a sandwich.

You mentioned experimenting with the audio landscape, and I can say that it's not the only thing that Supergiant games experiment with: Most of their games have a unique take on one thing or another, gameplaywise. Not all of their experiments go well, but I love that they're around to do those experiments.

Ever since i played Transistor alot of its songs found their way to my mp3 player for when i'm biking since they have such a different vibe from other music i listen to. And the game is quite good,u should hear the hummed version of this song, they do that alot with songs in this game that whenever your character idles, she begins to hum a song since she can't sing it(lost her voice). 1 other thing, the volume of these videos seems to be quite low(as in, i need to max out my speakers to hear u.) so might wanna look into that.

A bit of context. This is the first phase of a boss fight. As the fight goes on, the song fades into a highly digitized version of the theme titled _n C_rcl_s. Hearing both of them overlayed at the 50% health part of the fight while dodging attacks and the fight ramps up is one of my favorite moments in that game. It's one of my favorite games of all time because of how good the soundtrack is.
