i'm in my early sixties now Don, and seeing those transistor radios brings back happy, carefree memories of the mid-to-late 1960s, as they usually do whenever I see pocket-size MW-only transistor radios of that era. Thank you for sharing Regards, Phil.

I'm inspired to fix a Radio Shack 3 channel weather radio from the 80's-early 90's. It uses an IC for audio amplification but the radio section is crystal/transistor. Had a bad battery leak. I have a second identical radio which works so that helps!

Hey Don, thanks for mention! I would say that the Zenith Zenette is probably the most interesting model in that group, it's too bad that it has some serious corrosion issues though. The Continental is probably the second most interesting, and is likely from the mid 60's. That tuning mechanism on that SoundDesign radio is interesting, it gave the set the look of dial-string tuning, without the labor of stringing a dial (which is one of my least favorite radio repair tasks). Cold solder joints are a fairly common problem, especially on inexpensive radios that were produced overseas.

I have been collecting radio for about 2 years. I’ve found that except for the early American made radios, the value is pretty much according to the owner or buyer. (Prices are just all over the place). Unfortunately I am not able to work on the radios myself, so I end up paying double for each radio, but what good is a nice looking radio if it’s not working? Every one collects differently. Every time I watch these,I learn a little bit more. 📻👍🙂‼️

When we were kids we went through a lot of those little pocket radios. Always got em from Radio Shack and would fall asleep at night listening to WAKY in Louisville on them. Of course the next morning the battery would be dead as a doornail and by the time we got more batteries we probably had new radios too, lol.

In case it helps, in the UK we had Zenit radios, cameras and binoculars etcetera.They were marketed from Russian technical shops, all Russian subsidised and all good value - I had the binoculars and a camera. Telescopes were offered as well I think. mid sixties to sometime in the early seventies there was a Russian shop in High Holborn, London but there were franchises also.

I don’t have a schematic for the radio, but one could start by replacing all of the vintage electrolytic capacitors and test all resistors to ensure they are in tolerance. Good video, thank you for posting. I have an early 70's AM/FM Zenith transistor table top. The entire FM band works great and the upper AM band from 800khz to 1600KHZ works great, but the lower AM band 550khz to 800khz receives nothing. Would you have any ideas on what could be possible causes for the lower AM band not working?
@RestoreOldRadios
@RestoreOldRadios 4 жыл бұрын
Jason - it sounds like the oscillator is not operational at the lower frequencies. If you have another portable AM radio, try placing it right beside your Zenith near the antenna and assuming the Zenith radio has an I.F. Frequency of 455 kHz, tune the portable radio to 455 kHz above the local station and you should be able to hear the LO. An example, if you have a local station at 600 kHz, tune the Zenith to that frequency and the portable set to 1055 kHz to confirm the LO is working. If the LO is not working, your trouble would be in and around the oscillator circuit. Hope this helps. Best, Don

@@RestoreOldRadios CONELRAD is a contraction of CONtrol of ELectromagnetic RADiation. It was the result of what I believe to have been an executive order by President Eisenhower requiring all AM radios made between 1953-63 to have those special markings on their dials, requiring all commercial radio stations to cease operations, and change their signals to those two frequencies on very low power, in the event of Soviet Bomber attacks. This was intended to prevent the Soviets from homing in on AM radio signals to attack U.S. cities, as the Japanese military did in 1941.

@@RestoreOldRadios yah Wen I Was In My Teens I Used To Go To Garage Sales With My Mom & Look For Transister Radios To Fix & Resell. I Couldn't Afford To Buy Parts Cause We Didn't Have Tho Money To Do So. Then I'd Take Parts Out Of Old Stereos 8 Track & Cassette Players That Couldn't Be Fixed. To Fix Them. Then Sometimes I'd Take Parts Out Of Old TV's Like The Speakers & Smaller Components So You Name It I Used Parts Out Of It. Even Small Handheld LCD Videogames. Even Old Record players. Anything That Had A Circuiboard Small DC Motor & A Speaker I Took Out What I Needed. Even Today I Still Do It. Now I Go To Thrift stores & Look For Old Bluetooth Speakers. If The Clamshell Is Too Bad To Save Then I'll Rebuild It Into A Peanut Jar. Cause Those Jars Being Made Of Plastic It's Easy To Take A Hole saw & Cut Holes For The Speakers. So far I Found Some Bluetooth Speakers That Wh'er In Pretty good Shape. I Need To Find One That's In Pretty bad Shape But Still Works Good.

OK, so you can NOT repair a transistor radio without a signal generator ???
@RestoreOldRadios
@RestoreOldRadios 4 жыл бұрын
Randy, you can. A local off air signal in close proximity serves equally as well. Most failures are associated with leaky or shorted capacitors and at times a transistor or even a resistor. Good luck and all the best. Don
