Transit Power Steering Pump Replacement MK6

Today we replace the power steering pump on this 2001 mk6 Ford transit with the d2fa engine to cure a persistent power steering leak.

How many litres does the power steering take if i drain it and fill up with new fluid ?? Mines looks black so think it needs changed ??

Thanks very much mate. The link takes me to the pump for the post 2006 models and mine is the VJ 2005. Is yours post 2006? It looked identical to mine in the engine bay.

Mine is the pre 2006 mode they carried on using the same pump and it’s in loads of stuff

Ah right that makes sense. I can get the VM pumps here but no one has ever said anything about them being compatible with earlier models. I'll check the part numbers to confirm but thank you again for the information. 👍

No worries my man, it might vary slightly in Australia but certainly here in Ireland the pump was used on pretty much every version of the transit until the transit custom came out really

I've had a problem with my 2003 Transit for years... Sometimes after starting the steering clunks if you try to turn the wheel. after a minute or so it will be ok. It used to be just now and then but recently it is happening more and more. I'm convinced that the pump is at fault and needs to be replaced

Next time you start it, put your foot on the universal joint at the bottom of the column and then the steering wheel, if you feel the clunk through the column it is most likely steering rack end play or the universal joint itself developing slop

@@maxautouk so my mk6 2.4 350 diesel has timing chain not drive belt? Or is that the same thing?

@@rondiggz6589 hi there mate, the timing chain synchronises the crankshaft the cams and the injection fuel pump - the ansciliarg drive belt runs the steering pump water pump alternator and viscous coupling/fan clutch

No you can change just the pulley but you’ll need a special tool to remove it
