Transition From QA to Business Analysis (Why Good Software Testers Make Good Business Analysts)

Video Narrative:
I’m going to offer you a pointer that can get you that can help you to get started in making that transition. So let’s talk first about the advantages that you have as a QA person.
Quality assurance people testers are one of the main recipients of what would BA produce.
So all of the requirements and specifications that are being expected to produce the main one of the main audiences right there is the QA person. Right.
So basically what we’ve been trying to do is they’re looking at the business need and then they’re trying to figure out what developers need to understand and they’re trying to understand what QM people need to understand and they factor all of that into their dockets.
So as a QA person you have a massive advantage just because of the nature of your work because just think about it right. As a QA a person you have to understand would it produces inside out in order to do your own job.
So if I produce requirements and specifications, the QA person on the team has to understand line by line what’s written in those documents so that they can build their test scripts and they can execute their test scripts and in order to do that a lot of Q folks help to uncover requirements as part of doing that right. So they’ll you know they’ll run into a situation where they say well what about this test case and we think oh we didn’t provide any clarity there we got to go back to the business or talk to I.T. to figure out what that looks like.
So just because of the nature of the position that you’re in over the or in the project lifecycle you have a massive advantage over even a lot of developers in making that transition right.
The other reason that QA people have a big leg up is because of the fact that as you’re testing the system you start to learn right how enterprise systems actually function in the guts of how an enterprise system actually works how all the different components are broken apart and how they all fit together because you have to understand that stuff. If you’re going to be testing that product right. Those two major advantages are what make cute people perfect candidates forB.A. roles.
And so if you’re somebody who’s in Kuwait and you’ve been thinking or you’ve been trying to figure out whether you’d make a good fit for the aB.A. role you should understand that you already have a massive advantage over many other professions out there a huge advantage because of the nature of your work. So the questions that you have to answer for yourself now are you willing to go through the training and the work and the effort that it takes to actually learn how to produce the big deliverables. Right. So I think to a person you understand what the deliverables are inside out.
Now you have to make that shift into figuring out OK what are the steps that I need to take to actually produce this now. Because it’s a bit of a different ballgame to produce those things than it is to understand them. OK. So that’s if you’re in that role right now and you’re considering it. I understand that you have an advantage and understand that you’re probably going to take a lot less effort for you to make that switch than it would for almost any other profession. Now if you’re a full-time permanent employee I’ll offer you some advice on how you can get started. The one thing that you should do right away is to express your interest to your manager. Okay. And I’ll explain to you why that’s important because when you’re when management is looking to see how they can fill a role a lot of times they’ll look internally in their own organization because they would much rather hire somebody who has the experience of the company culture and a person especially if the person understands the ins and outs of the systems that way people understand. Management is much more motivated to be able to make that switch. All but all they have to do is they have to really kind of figure out how to make the resourcing work. So for example, if it’s the V.A. manager that’s hiring for the B.A. role but you’re reporting up to a Q A manager then that’s really the only challenge is that the B.A. manager and the QA manager have to kind of..

Hi Nikil, the only option you have in this case is to find another QA role at a company that you know has BA positions. There are a few ways you can determine which companies those are. I have more than 3 years of manual testing experience. Iam planning to change from career from QA to BA. But when applying for job, they ask for experience. And for fresher BA role, salary bracket is low. So, do I need to begin my career from scratch or how can I apply for intermediate role? We are a vendor company and usually work onsite at client location. Our company usually get requirement to provide BA.

If you do not have BA experience, it will be difficult to land anything other than an entry level role. There are some exceptions to this but most employers will not equate your QA experience with the BA role to give you an intermediate BA role directly from QA.

Coming from a development background makes you an excellent candidate for a business systems analyst role. Insurance is a very good domain to be in because it's a domain that has a long history and is going to have a very long future.
