Transition Metal Nitrosyl compounds
This topic is specially made for M.Sc. and MPSC students.
1. Nitrosyl group is similar to Carbonyl group but it has one electron more than that of Carbonyl group.
2. NO is present in metal Nitrosyl compounds as a cation or an anion.
3. Cation form of NO gives linear shape to the M-N-O bond, whereas Anion form gives bent shape to the M-N-O bond.
4. These forms are characterised by IR spectroscopy.
5. The point of attachment of NO to the metal is nitrogen instead of oxygen.
6. There are very few compounds containing only Nitrosyl groups, but compounds containing both NO and CO are common. They obey 18 electron rule.
7. Direct reaction with NO at high temperatures and pressure causes unfavorable oxidation and decomposition.
8. Many current synthetic routes uses reagents such as Nitrosyl chloride, Nitrosyl nitrites, and Nitrosonium salts.@dr.armschemistry4541
