I can now fly round the track, in iRacing, in VR, at 90Hz, with most of the settings at high. I am glad you like the video and found it helpful. I am not so convinced that CPU is the major factor, I think it depends on which software you are running. But I will test this soon, with various packages, and see what is draining what from whom. Far as I know, most sim racers are using GPU (in VR) where as flight sims are draining a lot more CPU AND Gpu :) Hopefully the tests will clear this up.

Hi, thank you for subscribing, it's be great that so many people have decided to join me on this journey into Sim Racing. It's a great community to be a part of, and I am really having a great time making these videos, so I appreciate your support and feedback. The older gamers perspective thing came from when I first started the channel, last year, and the big SIX OH was looming at my hard, and I was trying to find a way of embracing my age rather than running and hiding from it. I had a number of other name ideas, but they were already taken, so I had to find something that wasn't taken, but that appealed to me. And so, the Older Gamers Perspective was born. The concept really is that I am a gamer who has been around for a fair bit, so there shouldn't be anything that surprises me or catches me out, or disappoints me (Yes Starfield I am looking at you). But! It has to be said, this year, where I have been diving ever deeper into Sim racing has taught me that there is always more to learn, to surprise me, and to catch me out, but that it's still great fun to do so :) So, yeah, it's my perspective, and I am a gamer who is fairly old. Not as old as some who have subscribed here, or who I met at the last ADAC sim racing show, but still, pretty old :) Hopefully that explains it better. You maybe right that it throws some people off, but the name is mine now, so it is what it is, and I have to find a way to make it work. In a few weeks time I will do a live stream, talking about my channel, maybe I can make it clearer then. Hope you can tune into it.

DLSS would be nice, but I am not sure if the game engine being used is going to be able to cope with it. ACC is pretty cool, but it's not really AMS2, which has such a huge choice of cars, where as ACC is GT or leave. I do like ACC, but have yet to fully get into it, and do find myself spending more time on AMS2 than ACC.

I have released (just today in fact) a follow up video on improving the performance headroom on my setup. Take a look at that and see if there is anything in there that will help. There were some surprises on which setting had the most effect (performance draining), and which did not. Also note that some settings in iRacing need you to reboot the application before they take effect (and not just the orange ones!) To answer your question, I am using an i5 13600k, (a build video is also on my page here - I am sound like an advert now, aren't I ;) ) and I also did some CPU metrics towards the end of my latest video, but only briefly. let me know, in the comments of the new video, if any of the performance tips help you out. After I did a marathon test session, I could race at 90Hz, in iRacing, at 1.7x, with a lot of the settings in iRacing on full. Oh and I also found that using OpenXR Toolkit was a real performance increaser. Good luck and I hope you find the solution you need.

If you want to see an improvment I would pick parts with a bit more tactic. For example a x3D cpu will help massively in vr with frame consistency and will push more frames to the gpu then any i9. Next things you could of done differently is get a used 3080 for significantly less but only slightly slower. And probably the last issue is you are using a quest which most likely taxes a lot of performance and looks like stream while something with displayport like a reverb g2 that displays perfectly like a monitor and doesnt cost the system performance for the compression.
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comments. Which X3D were you thinking off that would be better than the i5 13600k, and still in that sort of price range? where I am in the world, the 3080 isn't significantly less, in fact checking today, it's fetching about 100€ less than I paid brand new, and it would be second hand. This might be different where you are. I don't mind buying second hand, but it does come with a risk, in that these types of cards are often thrashed (or mined) and the thermal pads can be on their last legs. Not always the case, but if I am paying this sort of money, I would prefer to buy new, and have a warrantee. The G2 is a classic headset, but with Microsoft declaring WMR as end of life, the G2 doesn't have much of a future. Besides which, I have tried one and I thought the sweet spot was a little small, even when compared to my CV1 headset, and not even worth comparing to the pancake lenses on the quest 3. Plus, I like to play mixed reality games, and do other stuff with my VR headset, so it's not a dedicated sim headset, so for me the Quest 3 works better for my needs.

@@OlderGamersPerspective fair enough. 5800x3d or 7800x3d are both good. The 5800x3d is cheaper because its on last generation am4 socket. The 7800x3d is more expenive but can be a lot better depending on the game. Im on 5800x3d curently and Its what is going to be within the i5 budget most likely, you can buy almost any old used am4 motherboard with a b or x chipset for cheap but might need a bios update. I didnt know prices where bad there, here in canada you can pay 300 to 400 cad less for one. I personally don't see any flicker at 72Hz, but I am old school and have been playing games on flat screens with far slower refresh rates, so who am I to say? I think if it annoyed you on the quest 2, it's likely to be the same on the quest 3, or any other headset. However, the good news is I did a follow up video where I found some more performance in the 4070Super, and managed to get it to run at some high settings at 90Hz. 3070 on Okayama didn't dropped to 45fps, it was just Oculus frame reprojection ASW kicking in, as it works at 1/2 of refresh rate (45).
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for the comment. It is annoying that it was doing this, as ASW is turned off in the ODT, but it has to be said, it is still the 3070 that's causing this. The GPU performance drops, so ASW kicks in. What was interesting is that at 80Hz, the ASW kicks in at places the 90Hz does not. Weird huh?
@Pe11ePD10 ай бұрын
@OlderGamersPerspective yeah, definitely weird. It doesn't happen with my Q2, so I suppose software have bugs with Q3.

@OlderGamersPerspective I use 72hz for all sims (racing and flight), as my 3090 can't handle more than 40fps in MSFS and X-Plane, and not more than 75-80fps in AMS2, with Quest 2 via link cable.

I run Iracing at 100% resolution with a G2 reverb. Stable 90fps even with 40AI. There really is no need to run at 72hz, especially with a freaking 4070S :-/ (edit - forgot to mention here I'm running on a much slower 2080S :)
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
I can run at 90Hz, and there is some headroom there, but it's track dependant and I am predicting at this point, that when Tempest Hits iRacing, that headroom will shrink. I can also run 90fps, with 60 Ai, and have some decent settings, but, only if I pick the right track. If I pick a demanding one, I can still run it at 90Hz, but I will see dropped frames in certain areas that are graphically taxing, such as Okayama with it's new 3D curbs.
@MrEDET10 ай бұрын
Just to be clear - I get a stable 90fps at every track, also at Okoyama and Virginia for example. Right at the start with a full AI grid. Personally I found the difference between 72hz and 90hz huge, smoothwise. I just checked your Iracing settings and you even have a lot set to Low and foliage off - I have foliage on high for example. I'm not sure if it's the Link connection bottlenecking everything for you, but really, if my 2080S can handle a stable 90fps there is no reason to run this at 72hz with a much better GPU. Not trying to be a smartass btw :D I just feel that you're losing some serious performance somewhere. The G2 even has a higher resolution than the Q3.. Are you running in OpenXR and using ToolkitXR? Especially with ToolkitXR you can get a great performance boost by using ffr. Iracing is also quite CPU heavy, which CPU are you using? @@OlderGamersPerspective
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Then I am very happy for you. Speaking with others on the forums, problems with Okayama and Virginia are not uncommon, and everyone has different systems, so there is something up with these tracks. But if it's not happening to you, like I say, I am very happy for you. Does the G2 connect with a USB cable or a HDMi? The difference in 72 and 90Hz is a subjective one, some people notice it, others (me for example) don't. It's just the way it is. I haven't seen much difference in trying different cables on my system, perhaps the issue is with the length of my cable, which has to be fairly far away from my PC due to space issues where I have my computer. I don't think you are being a smart arse, but you have to accept that some people have a different setup, and so are going to get different results. So far, these are the results I have on my machine. it would be nice to improve on that, and I will try, but my view of the 4070Super being a small improvement over the 3070 will probably stand. I'll take another look at this, with the setup as is, and see if I can squeeze some more performance out of it, but so far, this is pretty much what I have seen other people getting on their systems. I am running an i5 13600k on DDR4 ram with an NVME for my OS and another one for my games. I will try OpenXR toolkit at some point, probably also make a video about it. Thank you for the feedback and for paying close attention to my video.
@MrEDET10 ай бұрын
Okayama and Virginia are more demanding for me too, I had to decrease some gfx details to also get 90fps there. The later tracks from Iracing are more demanding, though Virginia for example became less demanding again after it was updated/patched a couple of times. The G2 connects directly with my 2080S display port, but the differece between that or Link/VD is not that extreme. It differs per game but some games weirdly enough run better on my Q3 with Virtual Desktop than with my G2, like Dirt Rally 2 for example. I guess some games don't run that well with WMR, which the G2 uses. Ofcourse every machine is different - I just mentioned this trying to help you figure out where the bottleneck is. The 4070 (not S) is already something like 50% faster than my 2080S. I use a I9 9900 so your i5 13600 is a bit faster too. Using OpenXR/ToolkitXR helps a lot (setting up ToolkitXR gave me something like a 15% performance boost), I suggest Wanderschikanen.tv here on KZbin, he has a great setupguide for that. Also curious if the performance would be better for you using VD instead of Link. Hope you figure out how to increase your performance a bit more. And yep.. when the rain update comes I'll have to fork out the $$$ for that 4090 too :-/ ;) @@OlderGamersPerspective

Went from a 3070 to a 4080s. The 4070s and ti use the same ad104 die as 4060 and lower so i didn't bother. 4070 super ti is best value imo because its a sub 1000 card that uses the same die as the 4080. With the 4080s being a rather powerful card. The only reason i picked the 4080s is the higher memory(1440p and vr res consumes memory) and i like to run games native. And its almost 50+% performance leap over the ad104 4070s. Important note is that the 50% leap isn't frames perse but i noticed that in benchmarks the vr overhead and framelos was insanely lower on the 4080s.

Thank you for this comment. Just the sort of information that people on here, looking to buy a new card, come to see and read. I would agree that the 4080Super is the better card, but at the time, it was outside my budget. In fact, it still is, being almost twice the price for the equivalent 4080 Super as compared with the 4070 Super that I did buy. But at least it's not as expensive as a 4090 :)
@7249xxl3 күн бұрын
Yhea the 3070 was holding me down i had to budge. We're at a weird phase in gaming tech where developers built their games with upscaling in mind and hardly any optimizations for native resolutions. This inturn allows for manufactures like nvidia to make bad products like the whole 4000 lineup that just lacks vram for 1440p(the new 1080p). I hold no hope for the 5000 series and intel and amd although very strong competition just aren't there yet. (they have the vram but not the raw performance nvidia seemingly does have).

I solely run iRacing, with my pc containing a 5800X3D and a 4070 Ti. I have been frustrated with very poor graphics in my headset, despite trying many different settings. My cpu often appears close to maxed out, while the gpu has headroom. I will keep working on this, as VR is such a step up from using a monitor. Thank you for the very helpful video. I use the official Meta Link cable. On iRacing it shows OpenXR, OpenVR and Oculus. I usually select Oculus, but I have tried selecting OpenXR, so I can use the OpenXR Tool kit. So far, for some reason, the Tool kit doesn't recognize my headset, so doesn't help at all. Happy racing!

Are you going to play these games via steam or as standalone on the headset? For steam, the upgrade to a 4070S will help, but there are other factors you need to take into account, such as how you are connected to your PC, and how powerful the rest of the PC is.

Hi, I am glad you found the video helpful. Getting a PC to run with the Quest 3, in VR is very demanding and difficult to achieve on a budget. It can be done, but it will mean you have to limit your expectations. Getting up to 90Hz is not super difficult, and most of the time I was able to manage it on my 3070 (non-ti), but it was paired with a 13600k. I am not familiar with the 9900kf, but a brief search online has revealed that the 13600k is about 25% faster, which isn't a whole lot, so in theory, yes you could get there. But... You may find that you will have to drop some settings downwards, and you may still not be able to achieve 90Hz on some tracks that are not very well optimised. If you can hang on, the 50 series will be out later this year, probably, and that could help flood the market with some second hand 30 and 40 series cards, which will make the whole thing cheaper. Otherwise I would say the 3080ti is a solid card, and it will be a big upgrade from the 2070Super, the question will be, does the bottle neck shift to the CPU? Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

@OlderGamersPerspective8 ай бұрын
It is yes. I used a Quest 2 for sometime, with iRacing, before I swapped to the Quest 3. You do of course need to make sure your computer is compatible, or indeed, up for the job of supplying the graphics needed to display on the Quest 2. I use a link cable, but other people have had success with Airlink or even Virtual Desktop.

Thank you a lot for this video, there’s very little information about PCVR specs, especially using a simple link cable. Thinking about getting the 4070 super for AC at 72hz and decent graphics, but sadly you ran ACC. Do you think i’ll have good enough results on AC with this card? I saw a lot of people having problems with blurry ‘ps3 looking’ tracks. But maybe this has to do with the crazy amount of variables (which I hope are fixable in settings?) Edit: also buying the Quest 3

I never had a lot of luck with AC when I was using the Quest 2, so I should really revisit this sim with the Quest 3. So unless 12gb was no issue at all for the quest 3 on high settings, it might be a smart idea to stick with the 4070 super… I can’t decide!

I guess I'm not the only one who can't tell a difference with 72Hz and 90Hz in VR. I'm using the Quest 2 with a 3070Ti, and I recently switched from running bare bones at 90Hz (details all off, 8x sharpening, etc) to the recommendations in the VR PDF, but at 72Hz. The game looks better, and surprisingly, I'm faster. I'm not sure why, or how, or if it's just coincidence, but I'm consistently better in the GT4 and F3 since the switch to 72Hz. So worst case, it's the same for me. Another thing to try is the OpenXR upsampling. I've read that setting Oculus to 1x and then setting the resolution to the 2704 x 2736 (per eye) in OpenXR has better performance, for the same resolution, as setting Oculus to 5408 x 2736 and OpenXR to 1:1. I've gotta try that and benchmark. I'm assuming when running AMS2, you do the same sort of upsampling in SteamVR for that game as OpenXR for iRacing... I got a noticeable performance bump from the other OpenXR settings, so I'd recommend you try that (Turbo mode, Foviated rendering, etc)
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Yes, indeed, running at 72Hz to 90Hz, really doesn't feel that different to me. I am doing some more tests this week, at 90Hz, but this is mainly because there is some interest in the comments to see what the card can do when pushed at this refresh rate. Video to follow soon... The openXR thing is a whole other Rabbit hole that I expect to be sucked into soon.

It seems slightly strange to talk about performance in iRacing by mainly focusing on how much of your GPU isnt being used (overhead). You are essentially leaving any extra power you gained unused? Having 40-50% overhead should easily be enough for the jump up to 90Hz
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for your comment. I have thought long and hard about what you are saying here, and yes, it does feel like I am leaving too much power on the table, unused, so I am rerunning my tests, at 90Hz, to see if I can get a clearer picture of what I need to do, in order to run at this speed. I think my initial thoughts were based on my experiences with the 3070. This card would often get hot, and I became wary of running it too hard or too fast, in order to make sure it didn't cause a problem mid race (and wreck other people when I lost control of my car). In other words, I became very cautious. However, I am using a different card here, and so I need to treat it as a separate entity, and see if it can be pushed further. My next video will look at pushing the 4070 Super, at different settings. I will do iRacing first, but AMS2 and ACC will follow shortly after.

@@OlderGamersPerspective that sounds like a good plan, I understand leaving some overhead to reduce frame drops but I think you can find a better balance. You will never completely avoid the occasional stutter. Good luck with future testing and enjoy the smoothness of 90Hz 👍

That's fair enough. It's a judgment call. My call was that I didn't want to wait, as I've never really been much good at that. Been the same since I bought my first PC in the mid 90's. In that time, I have sometimes waited for upgrades to appear, and sometimes they have, and sometimes they didn't, and sometimes when they did they were not worth waiting for, and sometimes they were. I think what I am trying to say is that we each must make our own decisions. For me, the system I had built last year felt like it was being held back by the 3070, and now I have the 4070Super in there, it really is suddenly like having a new computer. Appreciate the effort benchmarking for VR - a lot of work. G2 here on 3070/5800x3d combo - iRacing only. Couple of things I noticed, when selecting different refresh rates while the render resolution was consistent , there is a factor underneath the x * y resolution , the higher the refresh rate you selected the higher that factor. I am ignorant how meta works but is that slider perhaps increasing the resolution too ? This would def hurt FPS for higher refresh rates as its pushing more pixels. Also someone else said if you maxed settings in iRacing, iRacing restart is required for some settings to take effect - you might have done that of course. Just curious , looking to upgrade to provide some headroom for Tempest as well , worried how much perf we will lose in VR. Hey @chrissimpson1098 :)

@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
I am not an expert, but I can tell you that increasing the slider does cause an increase in resolution. You can see this by the position of the black boxes, and also what sort of magnification the UI needs. It does add to the performance headroom (or rather it subtracts from it) and if you want to need a better performance rating for you headset, you are best to try lowering the slider. When I was using the 3070, I used to have the slide at 1.3x, sometimes lower. I have experimented with the settings in iRacing and from my own personal observations, I can tell you that some stuff can be changed without restarting iRacing (most of the stuff on the left for example), but things like Anisotropic filtering, MSAA, Dynamic object shadows, and Anti Aliasing, for example, all require the sim to be restarted in order to take effect. I've just been doing a whole load of new tests, to see which one has the biggest overhead (spoiler, it's MSAA at 8x), and will be publishing that video soon.

I have never used a 4060 or a 3060, so I can't comment, but I can imagine that if you keep the refresh rate at 72Hz, and stay realistic about what settings you can turn on, and which to leave off, then you should be fine. But it does feel like 4k might be your problem. That's a lot of pixels for any GPU to push.

I have very good settings for ACC on a video + addendum on my channel. They are not for VR but they are for anyone looking for great graphics sqeezing all possible Fps out.

Cool, I will check it out. Can you link me to the video? I am still finding my way with ACC.
rtx 3070 on 2,7 ghz is cable or usb power thing no gpu thing
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
yes, you are right. I am trying to figure out a cable that will do better. I tried putting in a a USB card (PCIE one), but this lowered the reading to 1.3! On a good day I get 2.7, but mostly it seems to be happy at 2.6. I need the cable to be 3 meters long, at least, due to the positioning of my rig relative to my PC.

It's never worth upgrading 1 generstion the the next one, you want at least 2 and ideally 3-5 generations between upgrades
@OlderGamersPerspective9 ай бұрын
Never is a big word and a long time. It depends would be my answer. I like new technology, have done since I built my first PC in '95, and I could afford to buy this card (now that bit mining is no longer a thing). I get what you are saying, for most people, getting the next generation after, skip one, buy one, makes a whole lot of sense. Look at how many 1070ti users were still top of the polls on steam for how long? So it can be done, and probably should be done by most people. But for me, it was a different story. BTW - I did a follow up video to this one - find it here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4esi4evg6uLe6ssi=sQxUXLPJo0U85vAr where I found a whole lot more performance, and was able to turn up iRacing to 11. :)

@@Hjominbonrun Yeah, I kinda noticed that when I was reading some of the summaries at the end of the comparison, but I thought I was just reading too much into it. But yeah, there did feel like a clear dislike for all things AMD.

I had the 3070 before and I watched your video to make a decision on getting the next VR GPU. I had to sacrifice a lot and go bankrupt to get the 4070ti Super 😅. I also prefer 72hz with VR racing and With this GPU, it is buttery smooth. Thanks to your comparison video, I made the best decision for my VR joy ☺. As a thanks you earned a sub from me!

Hey that's great. Glad to help. Although not so good news on the bankrupt side of things, but hopefully it will work out fine. Check out my other video on the Older Gamers discord channel, there is a link there to the group, and it's worth you joining so you can ask questions about performance and so on. KZbin tends to be a slower way to communicate. Good group of people on that discord channel, with a lot of knowledge on simracing and VR.

im loving the boomer take "the 4070 has much more faster stuff" Edit - after watching the video, id look at your cpu. looking at the performance, yes, you're getting extra frames and head room from the more powerful gpu but i think you've got a slight cpu bottleneck. iracing is extremely cpu heavy, i noticed a massive difference when upgrading from a mid range to a high end cpu

How you doing with MSFS and the 4070Super? I find that one killed my system no matter what I did, but I also struggled to get into it. I think I am more a fly and fight type of guy, cruising at altitude is fine, sometimes, but I don't always have time for a long flight. If you see what I mean. The new flight sim on the way looks cool though.

@@OlderGamersPerspective the 3070 was ok on medium settings. the 4080 super i can crank all the settings up to high or ultra on 4k. for VR it's solid on medium to high settings

do you use the FOV tangent setting in the ODT to get high at 4k in MSFS? and what refresh rate are you using?

With the power of the 3070 i dont see why you didnt just wait until the 5000 series. This just really doesnt seem worth it at all
@OlderGamersPerspective10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. You are essentially correct, and I believe I say as much in the video, except for a couple of extenuating reasons. Firstly, I was concerned the 3070 was bottle necking my system, due to the 8gig ram and the fact that it used a lot of energy and got very hot doing so. Secondly I have software (outside of sim-racing) that takes advantage of AV1 codec, and for this I need the 40 series. I was tempted last year by the 4070, but not convinced. A year of using the 3070 with the 13600k caused me revaluate this, and look again at the 4070, and at that moment, the super series came out, with a better price ticket (not a fantastic one, but it is what it is), and the moment was right to jump to this card. I could have, and perhaps should have, waited for the 50 series, and that's the conclusion I reached in this video, that coming from the 3070 to the 4070Super was probably not the smart move, but at the same time, I needed the features of a 40 series card, and I didn't want to wait a year for the 50. Plus, in my next video, I take a deeper dive into the 4070Super, with iRacing (and hopefully AMS2 and ACC in the following videos), and find ways to get great performance with this card. Certainly better than you see here.
