I would also add: take your time. You don't have to start decorating as soon as you get into a new place. Don't buy "in place of" pieces. Wait and save and get that piece you really want. Plus time will give you the opportunity to see if you actually liked the item or you were being influenced by social media and such.

Great advice. Taking time to realise if you were just having a phase is a great idea. I have many accounts on fashion store websites and store clothes for at least a couple weeks before revisiting and realising I hate almost all by that time

one of the things i am so happy i did was collect postcards and small prints from museums and various places i travelled. in college they looked great all taped up on the wall, and now that i’ve moved into an apartment i’ve put my favorites up again, just this time they’re framed!

yes! I've collected posters from travels and kitchen items like baskets, tajines and vintage glasses from both travels, etsy and birthday gifts. for me it gives the items a personal value and story attached to them - instead of all my belongings being new things I bought together at the same time, they are things I have gathered throughout the years (I'm currently 23). and I feel like I appreciate them more :)

I got four large frames, cut open some coffee bags from cafés I go to, pin my favourite little pictures, tickets and what-not to it and frame the whole thing. It looks so cool and is really personal to myself and my history :)

@@solastacey127 there’s always a risk with tape! but high quality washi tape (like mt) is usually a safe bet if you peel it off carefully. you can also use scotch poster putty, which won’t damage the image (but may leave a little oil stain on the back)

When I was like 14 I found a wooden set of salt and pepper shakers at the thrift store and I have held onto them this whole time so they would be my salt and pepper shakers when I move out. I've done this with a lot of things. When I lived at home I would thrift cool bowls and kitchen stuff so I could use it in my own kitchen one day. Future me was very happy with past me for doing that when it came time for me to move lol

This is my favorite tip to pass on if you use shower curtains. Buy two of the same. Once you do that, you'll never go back to using only one. The reason I started doing this a long time ago, is because it will make your bathroom look so much more luxurious. The shower curtains will hang like window curtains, with folds, instead of just one shower curtain which always reminds me of a sheet. You'll need two sets of shower rings but only one liner.

These are great tips. A few others I would suggest, as someone who well into the later stages of home ownership and decorating--1, don't buy anything that is advertised to you on Instagram, or that is all over social media. You may think that rattan chair is timeless, but it screams 2020, and in three years you are going to hate it. If it feels like you have to follow trends, pick things like cushion covers and inexpensive prints that are easily changed out. 2, pick and choose where to spend your money. A quality couch is important because you sit on it all the time; spend money on that. The cute chair that you put in the corner of your bedroom is really more for decor than function, so try to find something at Homegoods or maybe thrift something. 3, Think about your house like a museum; you can rotate items in and out of rooms instead of keeping everything in the same place all the time. You can also get a couple of storage tubs and treat your decor more seasonally. 4, If you put potato chips in a good looking pottery bowl, and serve your wine glasses on a wooden tray on your coffee table, people will assume that you have your shit together. Goodwill is filled with interesting kitchenware that can look funky and cool if you chose well.

I am against "investment pieces". At 27 I bought a round dining table as an investment piece, thought I would have it forever. A few years later moved to another home, no space for the round table, so had to get rid of it. Lost a lot of money on it, and gave me heart ache cause I would've loved to keep it. My most loved items are all pre-owned. Even if not the most hip or chic, just the fact they are so unique or a cheap find makes me love them more. And my love for real natural materials keeps growing.

I agree! I grew up moving a lot and the thing I really took away from that is every home has different furnishing needs. Not to get too esoteric but every space has its own energy and items that works perfectly in one space may not match the next. The best decorated homes, in my opinion, are ones that “listen” and “collaborate” with the energy of the space instead of trying to force a specific look.

I think a really good investment piece that a lot of designers don’t talk about is a mattress. If you’re upgrading the size of ur bed to a full/queen (ESP a queen), investing in a quality mattress will def get you bang for your buck. And even if you only have the mattress for 5 yrs, that’s 5 yrs of quality sleep which is priceless anyway. I’d rather have a great mattress than a dinner table if I’m not in my forever home yet.

That's a good point. I like the idea of investment pieces that are smaller size. I splurged slightly on my solid wood desk, but because it's a smaller item, I feel pretty confident it'll be able to move with me and fit in future spaces.

Tip! If you are getting rid of gently used bedding/pillows etc. donate them to an animal shelter!! Also if you have any teacher friends they could always use those plastic drawers for classroom organization.

@@kellytoledough I started with my couch since its such a big piece and can be a determining factor in other decisions, the fabric, color, and style all set the mood for the rest of your pieces, also it takes the longest to find one that suits all your likes and needs, personally I can find coffee tables I like on marketplace easy, from there I went side tables, side chair, rug (though those can be done in any order), still working on some sort of console though, everything I like is way out of budget so might have to make it

Life constantly changes. So does my decor (I’m 63). Window treatments, photos, wall decor, color scheme, etc etc. The furniture, not so much, but after enough time a piece at a time. But all that other “stuff” changed as I have over the years but I’ve always surrounded myself by things I love. However. Lol. My decor has been able to be more my taste and expensive after my kids became adults!

this is so funny to me because i feel like the post-college stretch is the time i have least had time, money, or energy to put into decorating and the most function-focused period in my life. like i didn't even have that plastic organization stuff in college as much as after, when i was just grabbing whatever was free to make my place work while i was working for less than minimum wage and just trying to stay afloat (i've been out of college for 9 years and i'm just starting to reach the point where these tips make sense for me, although i still don't have enough space to follow some of them)

Great suggestions! Agreed - little things like nice glasses and elevated S&P grinders are good adult investments. Start with the Pepper if you’re on a budget and just decant the salt to a little dish/salt cellar situation. Picardi 8 oz glasses are a classic stemless glass that works well from water to cocktails and wine.

Here’s a cheap design hack I use: a significant portion of my art is just postcards, put into larger frames. Some of those postcards were purchased in museums and gift shops of interesting places. It’s usually up to five bucks for larger postcards, very affordable. I got a few at a planetarium, a gift shop in Big Sur, and a free promotional postcard for an album release. I put them into frames I buy for a couple of bucks at thrift stores. I think they look nice. Most of the time there’s no text on the front, the text is in the back of the card, so only the art is visible.

Years (and years and years) ago I read a book that advised buying furniture that was tall and narrow, as opposed to wide and squat. In other words, buy furniture with a smaller footprint. This has really saved my butt when moving from apt to apt. One of the first things I bought (I lived in the dorm) was a tall, narrow Hoosier-type cabinet with wooden doors. 30+ years later I still have it--I use it for storage in the garage.

I just moved from a studio to a tiny two bedroom and one of the best purchases I made is a huge carpet that anchors all the furniture in my living room. This is my first time buying a carpet and it makes my place feel SO much more legit and not dorm-y. So I’d recommend a carpets as well!

I think its important to not have generic weird canvas prints from Marshall's or just throwing generic rectangle frames on the wall to fill space. Like, hang plants, hang lights, use round frames, use embroider hoops, use MIRRORS, put up hooks where it's appropriate, etc. Create some varying height and put shape in each room :) (ALSO please stop using the $5-$10 square plastic ikea tables and side tables as an adult)

Great tips! People hold and display items like shot glasses and empty liquor bottles for way too long past the years it would ever be acceptable to do that. It screams I don’t want to grow up. It's always easier to decorate for someone else because even though the final result is beautiful, you know that you don't have to live with it and possibly get tired of it. And as a designer, that's a very real possibility because of the total immersion in the design world, seeing new trends, new fabrics, new products, it's too tempting to say, "Oh I wish I had done this or that just a little bit differently...."

As someone who is in her forties, I would suggest to all you wise young people to never stop thrifting. I recently bought a king- life changing if you share your bed. through this I learned Cal King is actually narrower than a reg King...Cal King is longer but not as wide and I prefer width. Just FYI for when you starting shopping for that King ;-). A lot of comforters do King/Cal King so its wide and long.

I like the classic “dollar store” wine glass silhouette. But cheap wine glasses tend to be thick and heavy. I like delicate wine glasses. And they ARE expensive. I’m still working on my stemware situation. I love the idea of having snifters, martini glasses, champagne 🥂 flutes and coupes . . . a glass for every kind of drink.

I meant like even a duvet or quilt in relation to the mattress size. Cali Kings and Kings have different dimensions so neither will look oversized and luxurious. A Cali king bedspread, for example, will look not wide enough and not have enough overhang on the sides of a king sized bed.

I have the Lindbyn mirror from IKEA, and I’m pretty happy with it. I don’t think people can tell apart an IKEA mirror from a $350 mirror from a specialised store. My hallway mirror is a $70 Target one too. This is probably a product where you don’t need to invest a lot in to get a decent look. I wouldn’t buy kitchen cabinets in these places, but it’s good for some stuff

Good tip on collecting vintage art IMHO, I still love all the vintage art I have collected over the years. The poster-y crap that I bought at the mall during college? Yeah, that shizzle is looooong gone. And praise Jay-sus I never succumbed to the desire to buy that mass produced crap from Z Gallerie. And that shit ain't cheap.
