Yes to rooms. You get more walls and more flexibility on hanging things with abandon, I feel. More builders should start planning nooks and crannies to add interest to the same old same old floorplans.

Hope they do it better now. Have you seen any of the 90's and early 2000's McMansions? They all have a lot of useless, weirdly placed nooks that don't add to the floor plan.

Yes the only open rooms I have are the kitchen/dining room. The wall was down when we bought the house. So instead of two rooms I now have a large eat in kitchen. I love having all my other rooms closed off. Not so much for privacy (I have a small house) but my design can be slightly different in each room.

My house is what I call an L shaped kinda open floor plan. LOL. My entry is an area that is defined and opens into a living room that is VERY defined that flows into the dining room which L-shapes into a kitchen. There are no doors, but open walkthroughs. So each area has 3-4 walls with these large open doorways into the other area/room. But, since there aren't doors it is considered open. I love it because we have a lot of parties and I still have younger children. I like being able to be in the kitchen and (though I can't really see them) I can hear them and see the TV as to what they are watching if it is on. We also have a "nook" room that is our library/sitting room right off the kitchen. I can't stand a true open concept (one giant, undefined space), but I also wouldn't want small walkthroughs or doors everywhere either. I hope my rambling makes some sort of sense. LOL.

@@vaderladyl so true. You either get an entirely open floor plan, or closed off spaces that aren’t really usable as more than a kid’s book nook. And as much as I love a book nook, I don’t need five or more in my home for my kids. Fingers crossed the architects start to change this and find a happy medium!

Totally agree about rooms!!! You can do some fun things in each area instead of trying to keep the same vibe in the open concept.

I wish I had more of this when I was younger/I binge on decorator/designer KZbin! Yours is probably my favorite right now. Our style is so very similar. All of my houses have had their own charm. You don't have to be rich to decorate it. You got the gift Paige. You are so lucky to be able to work at what you are good at. I feel I missed the boat! I would like my own store some day. Vintage lamps and furniture. Maybe some consignment and some new things in it. Also offer decorating service. That was always my dream. 45 now. I guess I still have time. :) I definitely have more money now that I did crap that I really didn't enjoy for money....smh! I am obsessed with lamps and lighting fixtures. I always have been. I got some really good ones.

just curious when you mentioned you “did crap that I didn’t enjoy for money” what does that means specifically? like in terms of happiness and being content with your life. I’m on my way to college soon and was contemplating what I wanted in life and what my family needs though I always thought I should only pursue the things I love above and beyond. I’d sincerely appreciate any advice, thank you :)

I had to learn to love green. Being an obstreperous child, and green being my stepmother’s favorite color (with orange), I hated and avoided it for years. I don’t recall when that began to change, but by my 30s I had a fantasy of creating a cocoon of a dark green room, full of great old stuff, a big wing chair, and books. I finally created that in my late 40s (Thanks, Glidden “Grape Leaves”) and it’s my favorite room in the house... a house full of rooms... small rooms.. large(ish) rooms... full of books and vintage lamps and large art. Still hate orange.

Found your channel last week and I’ve been bingeing ever since! My partner and I just bought our first house and it’s been beyond fun bringing design loves of mine to life in a space that finally feels evergreen. Ideas for content: 1. Going through pros and cons (in your opinion) of specific design styles. Better yet, you have to pretend to furnish a room with two random styles. 2. More takes on subscribers’ spaces! Want to submit mine to you later this year. 3. You pick from the 3: you show us 3 homes from across the US on Zillow in similar price range and size and say which you’d pick. Go through the inside photos together on camera!

Request: Please do a video on Offices. Like for someone who wants a cool vibe, but let's be real...if you have a desktop computer and an office chair I feel like the room is already doomed. Beside thrifting an office desk do you have any tips on how to make your office not look so damn generic?? So many of us are not in a dorm anymore, not taking clients in some sort of seating area, I just want a computer room that feels like it's a person's HOME not their plasticky cord filled workplace.

@stone301

Green is NOT a neutral. It’s just the greens y’all are using are a neutral or muted green. You can do that with any color. Pastel red yellow purple etc all will act as neutrals because they are shades colors with grey added to tone them down. Essentially we are talking about grey with some mild to moderate tints. Use a strong emerald or neon green and I guarantee you it won’t act as a neutral 😊

You are right on trend Paige. I just saw where all the major U.S. paint manufacturers like Behr, Benjamin Moore, etc have picked mossy green as paint color of the year. Also agree with you on the open spaces as opposed to more rooms. You want to have a quiet area to snuggle up and read or chill out where you can hide from the kids. Impossible to do where the only enclosed spaces are your bedroom and bath. They can always find you. Final note--a home without books is a home without soul.

Good shout on the open plan vs smaller rooms - I LOVE being able to shut the door! Especially so in period properties to keep that cosy, traditional feel (I’m in a Victorian terrace). FYI - there’s a home reno show called “Your Home Made Perfect” on Netflix UK right now which I think you’ll love. Two architects with different styles do over people’s houses in VR. You get to see a lot of modern, open plans vs more practical and traditional in the same space. So cool! I’ve binged it all over the last week lol.

Yes yes yes to rooms! I also do not like the fully open space, specially when it's a big house with those high ceilings, it does not feel cozy to me. I think open concept is great if you have a small apartment cause it will save more space and can be more practical but other than that, it seems pretty boring in most houses. Living in Europe, you find such beautiful houses with rooms full of character, charm and little details and I love that most european countries preserve and value that and won't change the structure to fit the modern trends.

I also really love green. In 2009, I painted my great room in a soft greyish warm green, and it still looks pretty current. It absolutely is a neutral backdrop, and I love to incorporate splashes of neon yellow and orange in my space, mainly in the form of glass, ceramic, and enameled metal objects. I also use black, white, and wood tones in my space, to keep it from looking too much like Veg-All.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the whole maximalism grandmillennia style. I've always had this mix of modern and vintage/antique style and I'm completely intrigued by this "new" style.

I think by "neon" she just means saturated colors?

i also love separate rooms ! maybe it’s the panini making us not want others in our sight lines all the time. and despite living at home in a a 1 br loft that doesn’t have full walls, a friend built me a custom rolling bed frame that makes my bed look like a built in nook that was always meant to be there

Kudos on living a truly livable style. Homes should be fun and comfortable, not stuffy and boring. You and your home (and the Goo) are not boring. I predict that by the end of the year, you will be one of the only interior decor channels adding, not losing viewership.

I would greatly appreciate a video on how to incorporate family picture or pictures of friends into decor without it looking out of place? I’ve struggled with this for years!

I very much enjoy your takes on design- both the good and bad. I have been really interested in mixing design styles and trying to figure out how to do that in our new home so that it has a personal and eclectic vibe, but still cohesive. I can't be the only one and would love an advice video! I also love the room reviews so please keep them coming.

Ah, the mere mention of vintage lamps takes me back to that classic Ikea ad from 20 years ago where a woman puts her old Ikea lamp out on the curb next to the trash, and it sits there alone and forlorn, in the dark pouring rain, while we see her sitting in her apartment enjoying the light from her new lamp. Then a Swedish guy comes along, stares at the camera, and says, "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That is because you crazy. It has no feelings, and the new one is much better."

Happy newest year!! Here’s to you in 22. English design seems effortless. Best textiles. Books a million says I. No to open floor plans you just don’t see it in Europe. Who wants a bowling alley where there’s no privacy. Request family compound!!

I love that I've been following your channel for a year now. I love your "hate it videos" as well as the "do this not that" stuff. Oh heck, I like your channel overall. I would love you take on mixing styles. I'm very much am Industrial person, with a serious appreciation for old English. I have a crazy love of kitschy styles like Baroque as well. We're looking at buying a place this year & I'd love your take on how to meld opposing styles, if it can be done. Thanks Paige.

+1 to rooms - after living in a loft I realized how much I had underappreciated the coziness and design opportunities you get with having distinct spaces. plus rooms mean MORE CORNERS
