i think a key component in all of this is to not rush. take your time sourcing and collecting items for your home. also try to ignore what's trendy, if your gut tells you to get something then get it! it doesn't matter if it doesn't fit in with the current trends!

It's funny--the "all Ikea" photo you showed looked pretty good. But that's the thing, those catalog photos are filmed in spaces with tall ceilings, beautiful light, wide floorboards, etc. Most of us don't have that, lol. In my home everything has been gathered slowly over the decades from a spoon to the yesterday’s mid century teak slate patio glider (my neighbor moved out and left it on her porch). I feel like a bird bringing back found object one by one to make my nest a home. My interior has no particular style but ppl who came to visit all said that my place is my extension (lots of interesting items well organized all over the place).
@33Jenesis

……I remember how I came to own each item, I really do. Many things have a neat story behind it. I met some interesting sellers via Craigslist. I found things on sidewalk that I hauled home. I thrifted small home goods from countries I traveled. I scored mid century kitchen items and knickknacks from Etsy when they were still reasonably priced. I took home things family and friends didn’t want to keep. Of course I bought stuff from Urban Outfitters, HomeGoods, and Amazon. Strangely I hardly ever shop garage or estate sales. I can’t, unless I can afford to lease a warehouse and start my own resale business. I always, ALWAYS find treasures in rubble.

M’y mom has a very white and minimalist home (a style I am not often drawn to, and one I know is often teased on this channel), that being said, the home is filled with personality! Almost every wood piece is a found object or hand me down, and most of the art that may otherwise be labeled « decor », was done by her. The home manages to escape cookie cutter white suburb homes, because every detail is cared about, and she really knows how to make a very simple design style comfortable

It's a gorgeous shot of the sunset from atop the mountain with all the beautiful fall colors surrounding the shot. They had it made into a huge print, framed it, and it is now in their living room. I love buying vintage, but I think it’s really important for us to keep in mind the safety aspect. For example we might have to replace the electrical of vintage lamps, as the old circuit / wiring can be fire hazard. And also the potential of a piece being lead painted etc. I just found out today that some colourful vintage dish wares potentially contain lead and can leach into food and am totally freaking out a little

I love rewiring old lamps. Very easy to do once you learn the underwriters knot. Also fortunate enough to have a vintage lamp shop close by for complicated wiring. Easy way to determine lead is by using a lead testing kit. I have atomic pattern dishes from the sixties I did this to. Simple fixes for keeping the landfills clean.

When I moved into my house, it suffered from a bad case of 80s. But slowly I've gotten rid of the worst offenders, the terrible light fixtures, the gross beige carpet, the ugly beige ceramic tile with brown grout, and replaced them with more modern fixtures, wood floring, and more updated tile. I didn't get rid of everything though. I kept the orangey oak cabinets in the kitchen, and because of the colors that I put around them, they look like a design choice rather than like an afterthought. I even have accessories in orange tones that reference the wood tone. I do wonder if my house lacks personality in some way though, as someone described it once as looking like an Airbnb.

One thing I realize from browsing “house/apartment tours” on KZbin for years is that….people are so boring. @@-alpenglow- it’s hard to find, there are a couple but mostly vintage maps of the country. What I’m trying to highlight is that when you walk into someone’s home and everything is new, there might be more to the story. Many immigrants that I’m friends with have homes like this because they don’t have access to their families vintage stuff or their history. It’s just our reality. I still enjoyed this video and found it helpful, I just know there are other people out there whether you’re an immigrant or grew up low income that can relate to what I’m saying.

I’m moving into a rental soon that is *perfect*… except that it has wall to wall carpeting in the bedrooms, offices, and living room. It’s the typical gross beige carpet and it won’t be possible for us to rip it up and put in new floors. So knowing how to create a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing space in a rental with carpet would be so helpful! Also, if you happen to know anything about putting laminate flooring over plywood over carpet, that would be really helpful to hear your advice on.

I think the best way to give personality to your home is to NEVER buy a bunch of stuff, decorate with it, and throw out all the perfectly good old stuff. The more time you spend with an object, the more memories you'll have with it, and the more personality it will develop. If everything is new, it might be satisfying to share photos of your great decorating skills, but it's like sharing your house with a bunch of strangers, you don't know anything about them except that they look good, just like falling for someone based on looks isn't enough to ensure you'll have a good, healthy relationship. You don't know if that pillow is best to prop yourself up on to watch movies in bed, or that couch is the best place to read a book. You don't know if you'll be sitting at just the right angle to catch the best view of the sunset. If you give it enough time to get to know your surroundings you'll develop a relationship with them, and you won't feel lonely while surrounded by hundreds of dollars worth of stuff.

I genuinely don’t get this demonisation of new decor and I’m not talking about trends! I personally never loved imposed passed down old furniture because they don’t say anything about ME, for me a home with personality has to talk about you! My house is mainly new because when I move to the UK from Italy to stay with my fiancé I only had my suitcase with my clothes and only few months later we moved out from his mum’s house to ours and the house was completely empty, I would say our furniture is mostly modern but is been chosen wisely not for sake of trends based on what we both love, also I’m a painter and fiber artist and on we hanged all my art on the walls, we do own a couple of “faux” Turkish rugs as we are vegan and the vintage ones unfortunately have wool so we didn’t want to compromise on ethic for design. I love Paige but I feel like sometimes this promoting vintage only makes me worry will another overdone trend and to be honest is on right now with all the traditional homes we see on social right now.

I don't know. Your videos keep coming off as snobbier and snobbier the more it goes on. As if somehow peoples homes are better just because they are full of thrifted things and warm woods. Homes have personality when the person who created them created them with a purpose in mind, regardless of whether it fits into your aesthetic that you stay up on you weird lil high horse about. Personality isn't a thing that homes don't have. Just like people, every home has a personality, even if you just don't the personality. But that might just sound a lil too mean to say out loud for you I guess. If anything the way you preach about things relies far more heavily on conformity than basically anyone else, where you have to have the thrifted glassware, burning candles, warm wood tones and other meaningless signifiers to be considered "cool". Youve even deluded yourself so much that you are taking that lamp even though you didn't seem to have anything good to say about it. Just because it is a "personal touch" with a "story" as if keeping around a lamp that you don't even like somehow makes you better than somebody who has a lamp they love from Ikea... I don't remember you being so weirdly snobby about such trivial things before.
@drrMonManon
@drrMonManon 2 жыл бұрын
I unfortunately agree. It is not real or "personality" it is maybe personal for some people but i thing it is mostly just aesthetic. if you dont travel and dont have presents from relatives or family heritage you would just try to emote and fake this atmosphere by bying those things by yourself (nothing wrong with that) but it would also mean that you are trying to cover up your own story and taste just to follow something considered cool or maybe really wish having this kind of life for yourself. Although i like Paige style and how she shows that it is really some kind of heritage, how it is connected to her family life, her traveling and lifestyle in general. Seems very genuine to me. sometimes it just saddens me that she seems to be unaware that a lot of people have very different lifes...
@AthalieM
@AthalieM 2 жыл бұрын
...did she say she was better than someone who has ikea furniture? I don't remember that. But I do kinda see your point -- Paige has strong opinions for sure and I can see how her youtube persona may come across as snobby and overly specific to her life experiences and tastes (and also her prop stylist background) -- but I'm not sure what's wrong with helping someone make their home feel more personal *to them*. Thrifted glassware can look LIKE ANYTHING. Burning candles can smell LIKE ANYTHING. Warm woods can be pretty much in ANYTHING. How those things may manifest are dependent on the person's needs and their own aesthetic preferences. If someone likes grey, and ikea and mass produced art, and that makes them feel good and comfortable in their home, then they should do them, totally, and discard Paige's advice. Ironically, I think the best advice you can give someone about making their home feel personal (as opposed to making it adhere to particular ideals around 'good design') is to follow their own instincts and discard advice that doesn't resonate with them.

Hi Paige nice to meet you! I enjoy listening to what you have to say on decor and the living spaces we all live in. I happen to have many of the suggestions going on in my home that you are talking about. I have real plants, florals, candles, a cam light, dimmers on switches, vintage items throughout the house, blue and green walls, a pink kitchen, My own Art on walls, some wood furniture and curtains, pillows in different textiles and so on ….. BUT! I do not have any shelving on walls. I recently was looking at a wall in the kitchen where I was thinking I wanted to put up some shelving. Hmmmmm

Can you make a video about co-habitating with people that have different taste? Like I am very mid century modern and Boho and kind of vintage eclectic but my boyfriend is still in like the young adult college days taste. I find my personal preferences overpower his and none of his personality is showing in our home.

don't disagree with any of the advice, but also... "basic" and "cold and unwelcoming" might be some people's personalities. (but absolutely if you don't have anything personal or any signs that the place is lived in, it's going to be beyond basic or cold and have no personality)

Yes exactly it just means that some of the people dont have Paiges personality (and her sense of style) :D to have home with personality is to really have things that you truly like and they mean something to you despite trends and so called "good taste". I love design and always prioritize comfort but....the amount of people who think comfortable furniture is synonymous with a giant brown leather marshmallow couch...ughhhhgg. I love vintage and am so grateful my mom insisted on going through her grandmother's and my grandmother's dishes and glassware with me. She told me whose it had been, and some of it I even remember as a child seeing it in their homes. The art deco desert dishes were a no brainer, (So sparkly and delicate) I can't understand why my sister had no interest in them at all. Different strokes for different folks. Mom had to slightly twist my arm to take the relatively large pair of pink flamingo figurines. She actually started to tear up because we weren't really interested in them. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I accepted them, and now that I have them, they are two of my most treasured possessions. Everyone comments on them. Great conversation starters. Too much vintage can begin to look junkie, so one must know when to stop and to know when to edit. Really great, thought provoking video. Shout out to Caroline Winkler for mentioning you as one of her favorite designers. That's how I found you.

So during the war, my husbands family hid beneath the dining room table. They lost the front of the house and it was rebuilt. The table was so damaged that they built a grandmother clock out of the wood. We are now buying that family home and restoring it back to it its mid century modern beauty. And the grand mother clock is pride of place!

All very good advice, thank you, I agree 100% 🥰 I've gone to a few dinner parties at the flat of an unbearably pretentious couple who are friends of a friend and whose living room furniture is strikingly uncomfortable - similar to the modular-no arm-monsters you used as an example. Plus, there is almost nowhere to situate drinks, etc... So while we all try not to fall off our cubes, drop our dessert plates or knock over the flat screen tv on the coffee table in front of us (wtf?), the host holds court, nearly supine, with his arms actually behind his head, in his €5,000 Le Corbusier Chase lounge! Never going back ;) But you, I've recently discovered through the lovely Caroline Winkler and will be back :) xo
