Raquel Flechero @ Raquel Flechero, Guessing that you learned the first and maybe second languages simultaneously from birth with native- speaking parents. In my experience, people who learn a second or third language as adults or formally - in college- are either/ both angry and jealous that they “had to” spend thousands of hours memorizing practicing, studying formally whereas they think you-for example-had it “easy” as if it was “given to you” as an infant because of passive exposure. All of their years of high school and college ‘mastering’ other language(s) doesn’t amount to anything because they can’t get a job at AutoZone w/ their degrees and “bilinguality” over someone maybe w/ no GED whose folks spoke languages at home since birth and then other language in school. They just cannot compete with you because you have the natural speech pattern and nuances they most likely cannot achieve. That’s why they’re snarky and bitter. The nice part of this is that more people are trying to learn the culture- including language- of others. That’s a good thing, IMO.

When you're working full-time, it can be REALLY hard to study the language. I've lived in Japan for 20 years, but I work ridiculous hours, and in all my jobs, they tell me "Speak only English, even to the staff. We want the staff to speak English well." And then, by the time I go home, I deal with family issues, and children issues, and for a long time, my wife was busy with home and family too, so she didn't have time to study with me, and studying by myself is boring, and to top it all off, #1, above everything else, I'm LAZY by the time I get off work. I mean, I used to leave home at 7 in the morning and not get home til 8 or 9 at night (and sometimes later). When was I supposed to study? The weekend? My ONE day off? Yeah, right! Sorry, folks, I'm gonna be learning Japanese until I'm in the nursing home. At least with English, though, we have an alphabet, so you can kind of sound it out. Japanese is 80% kanji, and every character can be pronounced all kinds of ways, and people write it all kinds of ways. Trust me, the Japanese don't want other people to learn their language!

I was one of those kids at 10 years old who had to fill out documents for relatives, specifically my uncle. My father would berate my uncle every time for living in the U.S for so long and still not being able to read, write or speak basic English. My father learned English early on when he met my mother and he would never help his brother. My mother's black so she didn't speak Spanish but she also refused to help my uncle fill out forms for the same reason - so I had to do it and I didn't understand much of the technicalities the documents had at the time. I still don't know if I ever filled them out correctly but my uncle never complained so I'm assuming that I did.
