Hey guys, didn't realize there was a difference between gear oils for trans and diff. I have 5QT's of the non-300 oil, can the rear diff run that? Or will it cause problems? Also is the Teflon tape on the diff fill plug really necessary?

@@namelesssd I find the diffs have a little bit of noise to them even new. Amsoil severe gear does quiet it down. Think redline does too. Sometimes the Subaru fluid is on the thinner side of the viscosity index to help with mpgs.

The 2015+ WRX manual calls for a 75w-80 oil labeled as Subaru extra mt (SOA748V0100), this is the factory fill fluid. To make a long story short, you should use the Subaru extra mt fluid or an equivalent gl5 rated 75w-80 because these fluids contain unique additives that 1: don't prematurely wear or degrade synchros, and 2: meet the extreme pressure and temperature requirements (gl5) of the front diff (hypoid gears), and 3: are less viscous in colder and normal operating temps allowing for better shifting, drivability, as well as fuel economy. Unfortunately Subaru only sells this stuff in 5 gal pales for like $400+, which is simply ridiculous on Subarus part. If you can get the parts department to sell you what you need that would be preferable, My dealer would not. And the pickings for an alternative with similar viscosities are very slim.
@SpencerHogg5 жыл бұрын
If you go to any performance / third party garage to have this work done, this Motul stuff is what they would use.
@aredd925 жыл бұрын
Yes, a lot of people use Motul fluids like motul 300 and they’re decent fluids. But it doesn’t change the fact that the transmission was engineered and filled at the factory with a gl5 rated 75w80. It would be better to use motylgear 75w80 if anything, though the viscosity still isnt very similar to extra mt, but it’s probably close enough.
@SpencerHogg5 жыл бұрын
@@aredd92 Eh, I'm reaching 150,000km's on my WRX at this point, due for another Trans + Diff. Fluid Change and I'll be using the same Motul stuff in this video (Same I've always used in the past 3 Subaru's I've owned, GC8 STI, GR STI, etc.) 75W90 works great in the -40*C cold climate and winters we have here.
@aredd925 жыл бұрын
The Sti has always used a 75w90. The 15+ wrx uses a gl5 75w80. I’m simply stating this for people considering changing their fluid in the near future. It states in the manual that drivability may be affected if you use a 75w90. Perhaps try the motylgear 75w80 on your next change and post if you notice any difference.
@devinsplaylist75 жыл бұрын
Aaron Redd I’m glad you mentioned this. I changed from the factory fill extra MT and switched to motul 75w90 and noticed a pretty big down grade in drivability. Now my trans doesn’t want to go into gear when it is cold.

Savage Grace ......that’s because they are trans. Places......trans.oil changes on many JDM (Japanese cars) are easier than an oil change....but those places still change $75 to $150 for the service. Find a local mechanic and check prices. If you want factory (oem) fluids buy them and supply to the mechanic.... also find a local WRX OR WHATEVER CAR Club, join and they will help you.....Jim PS.....rear ends are the same. I have always changed my own oil, trans oil, diff oil for the last 60+ years on every kind of car you can imagine, including domestics. Now my grandson does it for me, I taught him well.

Does anyone know how to determine if you need gear/differential oil change in wrx (besides mileage)? Also, is it damanging to your car if you go over few thousand miles over?
@SpencerHogg5 жыл бұрын
Nah it won't do any damage if you go over a few thousand miles. If it's to the point it's become BAD BAD you'd know, you'd feel it and potentially even hear it. It won't blow up or damage anything though, it's REALLY hard to get to that point of it being bad. Like 100k+ kms.
