Quick tutorial on how to change the transmission fluid on a 100 series Land Cruiser.
🔧 Generally the best prices for Land Cruiser parts partsouq.com/
Fluid transfer pump - geni.us/eB7Djpi
Same brand as the one I'm using in the video, but less expensive. If you're planning to change your transmission fluid several times, having a nicer pump is worth it IMO.
The thread size for the filler is M18*1.5 - if you're going the DIY route, you can get something like this and attach your own hose: geni.us/Ow67fT
Large plastic beakers - geni.us/80eft
These come in super handy on other fluid changes too. Really useful - if you're only going to buy one size, go for the giant one.

First off, great video as usual. I also have a 2006 Land Cruiser, so I usually check here before I start a job to see if there are any tips to glean. Regarding the diagnostic mode, I am under the impression that procedure may no longer be used for accurate temperature range when filling the late model Land Cruiser transmissions ('04 - '07). I believe you use the online or downloaded service manuals (based on previous video) which stated the correct interval of 97 - 115 F, but the original range in the printed service manuals state checking at a range between 115 - 130 F. The lower temperature was the result of a TSB (T-SB-0129-08 July 9 2008 Toyota change recommendation to between 97 F to 115 F) issued against several models and years of vehicles. The point is that the diagnostic mode built into the ECM is still using the 115 - 130 F range. As you demonstrated, the light will come on at 115 F and if it exceeds 130 F, it will begin blinking. I ended up just using my Scan Gauge II to read the realtime transmission temperature, but it could also be read in TIS. The higher temperature could result in lower than the currently recommended level of ATF. This is a good link for more details. forum.ih8mud.com/threads/scored-2007-unicorn-the-holy-grail-of-100-series.1043138/post-11645885

Great but long video. I also watched a couple of others and came up with something a little different. The hose I pulled from I also connected a clear hose to a funnel and refilled the amount I dropped. Which was at intervals of 2 quarts. I had a bucket that measures up to 22qts. Lastly, I did my best to get the signal to show after the jump. But nothing would happen. So, I just let it idle for 20 minutes then checked. I had indeed overfilled. Thanks for your video, it help give me the confidence to do it and now I feel very competent!

There is another easy way to do this job, drain the gear oil - dont remove fil and overflow plug - when you want to add oil just add it right way from dipstick using a funnel same amont that you drain it. When yo finish check the oil from the dipstick witn normal operating temperature.
@LandCruiserDIY

That is a valid way, but not on an ‘06 transmission, which does not have a dip stick.

Great Video! I've been pouring atf fluid down the atf dipstick this whole time. I have a 1998 landcruiser so I'm going to take a look if I have that overflow valve because I never used it. Also, why can't the manufacture tell the exact oil needed? 3 quarts right?

Hey! This seems to be intimidating... Can we not remove the old fluid from the dipstick hole and add the same quantity back? Maybe do this a couple of times after driving about 500 Miles.. Let me know if you have other ideas!!
@LandCruiserDIY
@LandCruiserDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark! The 06’ doesn’t have a dipstick, so using the fill plug is the only option. Personally I’m reluctant to suction fluid out since that requires putting a tube into the transmission. Totally hear you on it being intimidating - if you have a dipstick, that means you can also refill from the engine bay which makes things easier. Adding the same quantity back also works, the only trouble being you might not know if the truck is currently filled properly. I’d encourage you to drain from the pan, measure the quantity, refill from the dipstick. Once you feel comfortable with that, include the procedure to check the fluid levels. Hope that helps!

From what I read is better to do the fast one , since there tiny particles from the clutches wear and tear that helps it stick better so by leaving some of the original fluid/clutches particles Read this somewhere in ih8mud

+1 I've read this too - probably the safest way would be to perform several drain/fills at shorter intervals, but I'm not an expert in this area!

Hey good question - that’s a mistake on my part in the video, you do need to fasten the nut back on the linkage to cycle through the gears. Thanks for asking the question!

Hi there, thanks for the video. I have a 2004 land cruiser that doesn’t shift to gear 4 when driving in an automatic transmission but when I drive it on manual transmission, I can switch from 2, 3, and 4 easily. Would could be a possible reason that it isn’t shifting to gear 4 and 5 in automatic transmission? Thanks for the videos!

What year Land Cruiser is this? Also, would this same exact procedure work on a 2002 LX470?
@LandCruiserDIY
@LandCruiserDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Mine is a 2006 - this procedure is different on the earlier years (I believe also including the lx). Since you guys have a dipstick, you’re able fill from the engine bay. You don’t have to pump the fluid in. Also I think the fluid is different as well. Def check the FSM for your model year if possible to be sure. Good luck!

I have a diesel before facelift with a four-speed transmission. The process of filling with a hidden bolt seems complicated. Normally I drain the drain plug. It's exactly 3.8 liters. Then I fill the same amount of new oil under the hood trough a hole for the dipstick. Then I select all position on shifter P-R-N-D-2-1, make short drive and check oil level. Job done. I only have a sieve/netting filter, not a classic filter, so I didn't change it. Unfortunately, only a 1/3 of oil is replaced. It would be better to find out how drain TQ convertor and AT oil cooler etc. If we not change all, it is better make it more times than official period. I do it together with every second engine oil.
@LandCruiserDIY
@LandCruiserDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Agree - adding fluid via the dip stick would be nice! Once the transmissions became hermetically sealed, the dip stick was removed (maybe ‘05?) to prevent moisture in the air from being absorbed into the transmission fluid. But once the transmission is opened for the first time, my understanding is the fluid must subsequently be changed at an interval similar to 100’s with the dip stick. I’ve not seen any info on the TQ converter or AT oil cooler - thanks for pointing those out, I’ll look into it!

I think it’s likely, but you should find an FSM online for your model year to be sure. If you have trouble finding one, you can do a 24hr subscription through Toyota’s tech service bulletin for ~$20 and get the entire manual. Would recommend it if you’re planning on keeping the LX long term.

Drop the pan, put it back on, fill after waiting long enough preferably 1/2-1 qt. extra, disconnect transmission fluid cooler return, attach hose from cooler return line to catch container, keep enough fluid in vacuum pump, prime it good solid, start the truck and open valve on vacuum pump while seeing the old fluid come out, exchange enough fluid through transmission(preferably atleast 2 qts. extra than transmission dry fill capacity), turn the engine off and reattach cooler line/hose, confirm correct level, Done! I want to see this video and I have my right as a subscriber to ask for content! P.S The thumbnail will definitely highly help a video according to my recommendation kick your channel off.
