My 2.5 n/a Subaru is at 182500 on the original engine. Replaced the head gaskets for MLS versions at 140k and She's going strong. The key to these engines is regular maintenance, keeping the oil topped off, and using the right coolant.

I had a 2010 Forester 2.5 na. I put new heads and head gaskets on at 190,000. I put another 70,000 on it and something on the bottom end of the motor broke. So, 260,000 on the engine. Body was mint and I live in Upstate NY. No rust. I traded it in and got $2,000 for the trade. In retrospect, I wish I kept it and put a motor in it.

My 1999 Forester started leaking oil from the head gasket around 90,000 miles. I replaced the head gasket myself for $500 in parts and tools, but I kept finding more broken parts. I spent more on repairs on that car--before the head gasket--than on gas!

The H3s are underpowered and really don't do anything exceptional. But I bought one (an 06) base model with 110,000 miles and my daughter drove it for almost five years (from getting her license at 16 to 21 yrs old) and never really had an issue and sold it recently with 190,000 miles. Maintenance was minimal with a battery, and then the power steering pump, hoses and rack leaked so I replaced them at about 160k miles and it really turned out to be a great vehicle for her. My daughter loved it and it was a relatively inexpensive vehicle to buy, own, and maintain. I was pleasantly surprised because I was never a fan of the H3. With all that being said, they don't really do anything great, but they do almost everything pretty good, at least that was our experience.

It actually sounds a lot like mold 2.8 s 10. The fan on the 2.8 engines were actually louder than the engine and that's exactly what I remember my truck sounded like if I remember right someone told me that the pitch of the blades and the direction of the fan were different on a 2.8 and it made them incredibly loud

Did you replace or reuse the old seal? Depending on condition of the seal could be from the pan. Could also be where the trans mounts to the front most part of things. There is also a pressure release hose that often people forget to clip back to the radiator

to be a true Sue-Bee owner, you HAVE to have had an engine swap. My Friend has owned 4 sue-Bee's, and so far, 3 of them got a new engine (this is over decades, not at one time). His son is on his second Sue-Bee, and he has swapped an engine on the first. If you ask a REAL Sue-Bee fan if they would be willing to swap an engine, they won't HESITATE to answer "of course! will give me another ten years!". *This does not apply to the SVX- or as one SVX owner told me..... :" we don't talk about that....ever..."

If that trans. keeps leaking, I'd start to suspect a cracked transmission case. Cracks can drive us crazy, after checking all the seals and something keeps leaking. And not easy to find, some are hard to see they are so fine.
