Transmission Noise Problem: Jerks/ Bangs Into Gear, Drive Or Reverse?- May Not Be A Bad Transmission

I am so happy that I came across your channel,as I am looking up things about transmissions. I drive a 1998 Camry,which I got brand new in '97, and I have been the only owner of it . Currently,the car is 26 years old with 136K miles . In all the 26 years of this car's life, I never did a Transmission fluid nor a differential drain and fill, and as of late, when I put the car in drive,it sometimes reverses, and other times when it's in drive, the car stays in motion,even when I accelerate. These things usually happens when the car is parked for a while, like first thing in the morning. And when I do drive normally,there is always a whining noise. My mechanic, who is excellent, told me to get a flush,which is where he and I are at odds at, because I hear such negative things about getting a flush, esp. when a vehicle is old with high mileage. I hear a drain and fill is ideal, but I was told it would not do much to help for now . I did buy 10 quarts of Toyota ATF , along with a new filter and gasket, to possibly due the flush, but I am still concerned as the car is almost 30 years old . Should I do a flush, and should I get the differential drain and filled,or should that be flushed at the same time ?? I am so lost,worried, and confused .

Why you never changed the fluids doesn’t seem too smart and now you’re having symptoms but that is the past. All fluids get old and deteriorate just like engine oil. I would not do a flush but I would drop the trans pan change the filter and refill. You still have a lot of fluid in the torque converter so I would wait about a month then drain and refill again but don’t have to change filter again. The diff can be changed too. Coolant brake fluid all need replacing too. Nothing is forever.

@@motorcarnut I did change and flush the brake fluid a few months ago, and I drained and filled the coolant a year ago . The engine oil, I change every 3Kmiles/4 months, as I use conventional.

I have a 2010 Fusion. It jerks when when going from park to drive as well. Also, once the transmission is warmed up, when its going into second gear , the RPM will go up to 3 without shifting , and then it shifts but also jerks kind of hard. It will do the same for 3 & 4th gear. When the transmission is cold, it won’t do this though.

If your transmission fluid is at the proper level and doesn’t smell burnt? Then it sounds like a bad pump inside the transmission or valve body.

@jessefiscal8274 Sounds like the transmission is going. A bad pump inside the transmission is probably failed. But you should have it checked locally. Can also be a solenoid or valve body issue

Yes, is it normal for the transmission learning process. But it should resolve soon, so keep an eye on that and your warranty so you can bring it back if it doesn’t relearn.

Honestly, that should be enough for it to relearn. Sometimes the computers need to be re flashed if the problem persists. But either way you shouldn’t have to go through this with a brand new vehicle.

I had a slam in reverses and slam in low gears while driving with revs at high rpm. I put 2 teaspoons brakes fluid and after few hrs of running it stopped and i was impressed on how smooth it got. Will change fluid to prevent a possible damage from over swollen seals due to brakes fluid… seems shrink seals might have been issue or clogged filter. Problem is damn filter all the way inside and its a big job to change. Running fine for past few days since. Mount was new by the way.

I never heard of putting brake fluid in the transmission. Be careful, it could destroy the seals.

i added a literal droplet of lucas oil atf stop slip and mine was okay for awhile but then it came back so idk man i think my fluid is dirty + it only happens when the vehicle is parked on an angle

Replace the fluid, you'll be surprised on how much better it will be.

Some times I get a similar sensation coming out of park but fresh fluid often helps that. I had it with automatic transmissions and a CVT. If some fresh fluid doesn't help get it to a shop when you can. Hopefully it is just a bad switch or sensor.

Sounds like the transmission is slipping if fluid level is correct and fluid is not burned. Can be the valve body but has to be diagnosed

My 2006 Avalon did not throw a code but it won’t go into any gears and I just lost all gears while driving in cruise control. The RPMs rose up and no more gears. Maybe it’s the gear selector itself but no check engine light wish I knew how to troubleshoot it.

To just go like that its possibly the gear selector may need adjustment. Make sure the transmission selector bracket is not broke or damaged first.

Because it may be in-between gears when you think it's in drive. Best way would be to put parking brake on so vehicle doesn't move then find the shifting lever on the transmission and loosen the cable nut, then put transmission by hand in neutral , now go inside and put the gear shift lever in neutral as well. Make sure they are both in the indents, then tighten up the transmission shift lever nut. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, that would be something different then in this video. You may have another transmission issue.

It sounds like your transmission is shifting, but it's not doing it smoothly. You might have a problem with the solenoid pack.

If the engine is not running 100% it will effect the transmission as well. Make sure to correct engine problems first.

2011 Chevy equinox shifts through the gears smoothly but kicks when you put it into drive or reverse. Now it's doing a thing where you put it in drive start driving 30 seconds later drive turns into neutral and you can't get into reverse either until you restart the car

What about a click from Neutral to drive or neutral to reverse, Or from reverse to drive... I'm thinking maybe CV axle or engine mount ? And it doesn't do it all the time. car shifts perfect when I'm going on the road.. I do .. a little rough if I'm stopped at a light because it's automatic it wants to go forward could feel the car shake a little because of that I sometimes put it into neutral to stop the shaking... Anyway I've replaced all the engine mounts and the transmount including that torque mount.. there's only three points on a Mazda 6 gen 2 ... It's driving me crazy because I replaced all the mounts, but it's been a few years now... Maybe the mounts are bad again

Hi I have a bmw 520 deisel 2016 whenever I put it in reverse it jerks and when I put my foot down on the accelerator it jerks even more. For it to not jerk I have to put it in reverse and not put my foot on the accelerator let it drive by itself then put my foot down in order for it not to jerk. Took it to the mechanic he said it’s one of the valves in the transmission.

If it does it only when the engine is cold and the idle is higher, it's considered normal. If it does it when hot make sure idle control unit is working and throttle body is clean as well. If all is good then it can be the transmission and need to be further diagnosed.

First thing to do is check transmission fluid and fluid condition. If not sure replace with new fluid. Also could be valve body and or solenoids.

@@motorcarnut it’s a 1.8L tt with 110k miles on it. So it’s basically during gear transition but it’s not slipping but bangs during transition. Only on R .1-2-3. ( when car is warms up I feel it less). I’m ordering new fluid before draining the previous one in case I won’t be able to move the car. Thanks for your response.

Also, try to find the procedure for the "transmission relearn". That may help as well with hard shifting and banging in gear.

I have a 2014 ford escape front wheel drive with 1.6 liter turbo engine. When I shift the automatic transmission gear from park to neutral it goes smoothly. However, as soon as I shift to drive I get a violent vibration. The car drive fine and the transmission shift smoothly. I replace all three mounts ( Motor mount, Upper and lower transmission mounts) I changed the transmission fluid. The car idle smoothly at 800 rpm. All gear show up correctly when the shift lever is moved from Park to Drive. I would appreciate any input.

Hmmm, this is hard to say without being there but try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it not the hybrid battery the starting battery. If that doesn’t help you may try a transmission and idle relearn procedure you can look up your specific vehicle procedure online, I don’t have one at the moment. If that doesn’t work either then the transmission may of got damaged from the accident.

Brother, i have 2018 ford ecosport with manual transmission. Upon engaging reverse gear and releasing the clutch initially for back movement i get engine jerks and there is seldom clicking sounds in coordination with the jerks. I have a 2005 ford f150 xl triton 4.6L 4x4 when i put it in drive (D) its just revs up like its In neutral but when i put it in 1st gear i have to rev it up to 5,000 rpms then it will kick in gear and i can drive then i can put it in drive(D) like ur supposed to and it will shift perfectly no slipping or nothing i can start the truck and put it in reverse and it works no problem any help what could this be!!!

Hey Motorcarnut. Your video is extremely helpful and intuitive. I have an 07 Daihatsu Sirion 1.3 auto and I'm experiencing the exact same issue. While the car is driving the gear change is smooth however only when stationary am I experiencing this issue. The difference here is that the number 2 gear light stays on constantly even while the gears change. I'm not sure why this is.

Say , I tried having auto zone run a scan on my Ford escape 2008 , but there's didn't work Anyways , what would cause a car to pull to one or the other side when the transmission shifts into second? Sometimes it will pull right briefly then to the left briefly immediately as the transmission switches to 2nd? I put some transmission cleaner greaser in the transmission today in hopes it will help with the rough shifts and slow down the ware. THANK YOU! I just diagnosed the unit as malfuctioning, cable is fine. My dash shifting indicator lights are working fine. (2005 RAV4 automatic w/ 220k) My symptom, loud bang and jerk when u press the accelorator with it's in reverse. BUT! If I put it in reverse and wait 2-3 seconds and give it time to adjust (engage)then press the gas pedal, it NEVER bangs. So mine SEEMS electrical failin?, but it's still working for the most part. I'm going to spray wire harness with electrical cleaner and hit hardware/lever with PB Blaster B4 buying new one, $120. What do u think?

I think it’s a failing transmission front oil pump. They are known for that. But you can try what you said but I don’t think so.

If it were the tyranny pump, wouldn't I have issues with other gears? Overall, it shifts pretty nicely for 230,000 miles :) 2k miles ago, I drained tyranny and chg'd filter bc I had an issue btwn 1st n 2nd. Manual said u don't need to change it. She shifts real well now except when starting out in reverse. After I saw your note, I drained tyranny fluid again bc I figured new fluid prob picked up a bunch of crud too. Still shifts well except for reverse. :) I'll play around with neutral switch next week. :)

That's probably not the same issue. Slipping is not caused by the park neutral switch.

Your car has to have a cable not electronic selector switch. It’s on top of the transmission near the engine block and yes, it can also be a bad engine or transmission mount.

1964 mustang does this. It did this when it was low on fluid (Automatic). Drive now is smooth, but Reverse does this and sometimes can stall. Mine doesn't have any computers and I only hear the thud with reverse. Got any suggestions? Thanks

Reverse clutches inside transmission are probably going. Can also be low pump pressure, but that would usually affect the forward clutches as well.

Outside this video, I can't help you, could be anything. Check transmission fluid level and condition, usually the solenoids go bad but again should be tested first.

It's not normal, try adjusting the park neutral switch. Make sure when in neutral inside the car the transmission is also in it's neutral click position.

Maybe, could also be a burned out light. You can try to see if the bracket is broken first, that's what the problem was for the car in the video. Make sure transmission fluid is at the proper level too

Im stumped. I have an 04 expedition 5.4 l with an automatic trans. The fluid and filter are about 3 months old so fairly new. Recently it started shifting hard. I try and take off from park or a dead stop and i give it gas and it revs up then it feels like it slams into gear. Makes the tires squeal and everything and jerks the whole vehicle. Something is very wrong for it to bang like that. Sounds like it’s slipping bad and would have to be looked at by transmission mechanic. If fluid it at proper level and changed as you stated.

Thank you for the information , I have bad similar jerking or rough engagement in my old 1987 supra . I had bad neutral safety switch or shifter link issue . sometime I can't start sometimes without pushing hard to sllector or shakng in park position . Obviouly that switch or link issue , I leave it alone to fix .Thinking I will have to change whole transmission anyway . let me change the shifter bushing and check it .
