Cool. I just fixed a pan leak this morning on my 2006 Toyota Matrix with 208k miles. One of the pan bolts at the corner was completely loose. I snugged it up and checked adjacent ones which were also a bit loose. Then I went around pan with 10mm on a small 1/4 drive ratchet and gently check remaining bolts. Then top it up. Luckily, the trans function was not affected.

One of my bolts is over tightened and now loose as well. Your story gives me hope😅

@@Jeremybolenbaugh If you snug it up a little bit at a time and check for leaks it should be fine. Otherwise, replace gasket. Also, if it's a tiny leak (not leaving drips on driveway), you can just keep an eye on it. Also, make sure you have proper level for ATF (it could be low).

Your mechanic made the mistake using sealer with gasket. That's not how those work, it will definitely leak. You just need to make sure the surfaces are clean.

When the transmission doesn't have a drain, the weight of the fluid when the pan is loosened can warp the pan ,then it is extremely hard to get the old pan as clean as it needs to be. My old mechanic from many years ago told me to replace the pan and gasket,plus also only use the OEM gasket. Fel- Pro also makes OEM quality gaskets at a cost savings.

I currently have this problem with my 3.5 saturn aura. It just won't stop leaking. I bought a new pan, numerous gaskets(felpro thick gasket), rtv, and even stop leak. At this point I'm convinced that the transmission surface is warped

So it was the pan! I've got an annoying leak there too. New Gasket didn't slow it down either. Gotta try a new pan. The other thing was the transmission fluid line Fittings. Check those for leaks.

Something similar happened to me. My transmission started slipping so I decided to service it myself. The first time I put it up, it was perfect. No leaks at all but I forgot to put the magnet in, so I had to drop it again. The second time, I thought I’d use the same gasket. Bad decision. It started leaking so I dropped it again. The third time, I thought I’d use silicone sealant with the new gasket. Bad decision it started leaking, so I dropped it again. this is the fourth time I’m doing it and I can’t tell you how much money I’ve blown buying fluid and new filter/gaskets. If it leaks this time, I’ll take it to a professional and shell out $500 on top of the $200 I’m sure I’ve already spent.

Sorry to hear you had to drop the pan so many times. But yeah I get you, I sometimes feel like taking the cars to the mechanic too. Time is valuable too. Thanks for sharing 👍

The magnet is most important when the car is new. Metal chips from machining in the manufacturing process may hide despite good cleaning practices at the factory. It is in the first 500-1000 miles that any chips hiding inside the transmission may move with the fluid flow. They are gathered by the magnet. If your transmission makes new metal chips, you have a very serious malfunction and the magnet is not going to fix it. This is also true in the engine oil, the drain plug is often magnetic. A new car will have some chips. A spun or shattered bearing will make new chips. or a shattered oil pump. But usually, you will not see metal chips on the magnetic drain plug after the third or fourth oil change.

That magnet helps whether the transmission is new or old, and it is always good to have a magnet in your transmission pan. In older transmissions with failing universal gears, peices of that gear may fall out inside the transmission. If you have a magnet in your transmission pan, it may catch and hold that gear in place until you have your transmission fluid changed at a later time .

KGR Great video. I have a 2007 Caddy CTS, 145 K, I've always just changed the fluid not the filter. That was easy to do, never and issue and never had to take the pan down. I'd do it every other year, regardless of miles. This year I decided to do the filter, easy job, or so I thought. Went down to NAPA and bought the filter kit, probably an hour job. The CTS has a sealed system meaning there is no dipstick, another terrible idea from GM. Got the job done, started her up and she leaks as bad as yours. One thing I've done for probably 50 years, is use dental floss to secure the gasket to the pan, probably in about 4 or 5 places. It always worked well. Like you, I had it towed to my mechanic, as I didn't want any issues with the transmission (as this is the Mrs. car). Same thing it was a flimsy gasket. The mechanic dropped the pan, saw the issue. Somehow the gasket had a fold in it. He said it was not damaged. He got it all fixed up, no leaks. Great! Well a week or so later, I noticed a few spots on the driveway. Ugh. Also before the mechanic got to it, I ordered a GM gasket, identical to what was in there, originally. As it didn't arrive until after the mechanic had it put together, I just kept it, I'm glad I did. Probably like yours a rigid well made product. I'm glad I didn't return it. So now, I have to either fix it myself or bring it back to the mechanic. Again, not the mechanics fault, it was mine. And the gaskets are not readily available and have to be ordered. He did me a favor, doing his best when he reused the gasket. Anyways, that's where I am. I'm assuming you have no more leaks. Tom

Hey Tom, sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope your able to get it fixed soon. I haven't had a leak anymore, but I still check on it every once in a while. I guess what really did the Job is getting the new original gasket, but also the new pan just in case there was a dent I couldn't really see or feel on the old one. I wish it had a drain plug though, it would definitely make the job a lot easier. I wish it had the dipstick too! But so far no more issues. I hope you're able to fix yours soon. Good luck 👍

@@kgrdiy1928 All fixed! Got sick of the spots on the driveway, the wet pan and not knowing how much I was loosing. I installed the GM gasket, all is bone dry now. The gasket that came with the filter is a cheap flimsy gasket and the cause of the leaks. From now on, it's the GM parts department.

I need help! Last week I figured I would flush my transmission fluid and replace it as well as replace the filter on my 2008 Kia Sorento So I did but since I couldn't open the bolt in the pan to get the old fluid out, I decided that I needed to just Remove the pan. Well I did, screwed it back up. Holy leak x100, I didn't know that you needed a new gasket when you drop the pan. So I ordered a gasket and a new pan from Kia. 400.00 later, I installed them, filled the transmission up again. Everything seemed like it was good until that next morning when I saw that it's leaking. Ugh My question is, if I drop the pan, will I need another gasket?

I have a 97 Chev Lumina, and I just changed the battery, and it was sitting idle for 1.5 years, and did not drive it. Changed the battery today, everything was great, all interior lights went on, and she started on one crank. Took if for a drive, and noticed this red fluid dripping out badly from under the car. It wouldn't likely be power steering fluid, as you would get whining from the pump when low on fluid. It's sort of reddish fluid on the ground, and smells a bit oily, and has a bit of body to the fluid. After driving it for 5-6 miles and not knowing it was leaking until I was about 3 miles into my drive, I turned back and headed for home. As I got closer to home, and it was still leaking, it had "no power" whatsoever. I pretty much had to coast about a city block to get it to my house, where it's now parked. It is a rust bucket, but only has 50,000 miles on it, and it's a great utility car, for picking up building supplies etc, and I'd like to keep it. When I took it for a ride, it shifted smoothly etc ??? So, I was thinking, I could get lucky, and it may be leaking from the transmission cooler lines, as your video explains ? I think these lines wouldn't be expensive. Also my big leak, was coming directly from under the radiator, so it makes sense, Also the leak could be coming from the drain plug, at bottom of transmission drain pan. NOTE - this leak is coming out fast and steady, creating a pool on the ground fast. Maybe I'll get lucky :) and hear back from you as to what this likely is ?? If it was just leaky seals or gaskets, the fluid wouldn't be heavily squirting out. It would slowly drip out -- I would think.

The mechanic used the wrong gasket sealer, that's most likely why it leaked so bad. If you're going to use gasket sealer with the gasket on a transmission, always use Permatex Ultra Black, no other gasket sealer will work right. Be sure to let it cure for 24 hours before adding transmission fluid. If you use any other gasket sealer or do not let the sealer cure for 24 hours, or do not torque the bolts correctly, you will have leaks. Of course I didn't state the obvious things such as wiping the gasket surface clean, but I figure some things should be common sense to anyone who works on their own cars enough.

Someone swerved very last second in the road while we’re both going 70 on the highway. I hit a bumper that’s on the road and instantly pulled over to see I cracked my transmission pan and seen it gushing. Luckily It held up and I got it to my garage to prop it up. So there is no gasket on my vehicle(04 Chevy cavalier) and says to use the liquid one. I even asked a person at auto zone just to be sure. Is that sufficient enough?

Hey Handy Dan, glad you're ok. In My case my mechanic recommended me to go with what the dealership would recommend, which was to install the original manufacturer gasket. I paid full price for the original gasket which was more expensive but it's thicker and better quality than the ones sold at auto zone. It solved my problem.

I am having a similar issue with my 1997 Subaru Impreza. A mechanic already replaced the my oil pan and sealing gasket for the motor 3 times and he has not been able to completely stop the leak; there is one minor, tear like, drop leak in one of the corners of the pan. He used the glue paste as well. Now, he just changed the transmission pan gasket, and it is still leaking. I didn't see him set his torx wrench to any particular measurement. I think that I might have to get a new mechanic. Why do you all think he's not able to stop the leak?

Hello. I feel that in my case it was a combination of multiple things that helped stop the leak. 1. The original manufacturer gasket (third party's gasket was too flimsy) 2. Using the recommended torque specifications, 3. A new pan, in case the old one mightve had some sort of dent I couldn't really see or really feel. I hope you're able to fix yours. Good luck 👍

I can not get my Trans pan to stop f*cking leaking!!!!!! It's driving me absolutely nuts. I've had it to 2 shops now 6 times. 6 f*cking times and it stops leaking for one day at most and then leaks again. It's a 2003 chevy S10 and I do landscaping so I'm constantly in peoples driveways.... it's an issue that is driving me absolutely f*cking looney...

Have you tried putting on a new pan and the original pan seal from GM? I had a leak with a third party seal, so i had to get the seal from the dealership and that seemed to work for me. Good luck, hopefully you're able to get yours fixed. 👍

Hi Thomas, the gasket was around $50 (original GM gasket), the pan was close to $100, and each quart of transmission fluid was around $10 (I believe I used around 7 quarts, I don't remember exactly, but normally your owner's manual will let you know how much). Good luck my friend. 👍

So an old friend of mine told me as soon as I replace the trans fluid I have to time my gears? Then others say I don't. I'm confused about the teeth. I own a Ford Mustang GT (2011)

I don't think I've heard about having to time any gears. I only switch out the oil and the transmission seems to be working fine. I would definitely like to hear if anybody else has done this to see if it helps the transmission last longer.

Yes. I check it every time I do an oil change just in case, but I haven't had a leak anymore.

Liquid gasket should never be used along with a rubber gasket like that. There may be some areas that require a lil Liquid gasket to help seal weak spots but your mechanic should have known better.

You mean the drain plug on the pan? I haven't been able to find one with a drain plug. Would've made the transmission flush a lot simpler that's for sure.

That is so strange that your mechanic was not able to do that job himself and that he actually took out the magnet any mechanic knows that that would actually destroy your engine completely that is so strange I've never seen anybody do that other than on camera intentionally under some kind of dateline investigation thing or something lol
