I would like to add a piece of information for anyone who might be running into the same issue. Though it is difficult, it is possible to mix up the last two wires that are on either side of the pink plug at the front end of the transmission. Especially at night when you just want to be done. If you switch them, you will not get a code, you will get perfect pressure and temp rise, but your symptoms will be hard one-two shifting, and nonexistent or late fourth gear shifting. I hope this helps folks understand that it was two wires being switched, not something wrong with your transmission. Thank you so much for the video! The information was absolutely invaluable!

Yes this definitely is helping me I haven’t started yet but I think this may be my issue. I just bought my Tahoe with 93k miles and I’m unsure if this issue has been addressed before, but I’ll take the low end and go in and change the oil and filter as well and under there I’ll check the connections. Thanks a lot for mentioning that 👍 by the way are you a GM technician

Good video in 21 gmc sierra 2.7 my transmission just started running hot took it to the shop didn't find anything wrong. Had another shop tell me this didn't believe at first but good info so what he said it was a bad temp sensor but they would not sell them separately. Till this day i have not done any of this repair but surely looking forward on this.

Really appreciate this video post. I had the P0711 code. Reporting here that, per my local GM dealership, the harness part number has rolled to 24046895. Sry if redundant info! I also installed the Shift Technology Products STL010 kit in place of the stock trans cooler thermostat valve, and all together, with fresh fluid - this 2017 Sierra 6.2L with 8L90 no longer has the hard shift and temps are stable and have not risen above 125degF. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. I just did this on my 2015 Yukon XL Denali. I got the P0711code about 3 years ago, reset it and never came on again until last week. Reset it again and sure enough it pooped back on. Even though my Yukon is still under the extended warranty my dealer didn't have time to get me in before a planned road trip. The wire harness, fluid and filter came to $220.86. Would've been cheaper to order online but time was of concern and the dealer had all parts in stock. Hopefully this did the trick.

Great video, and thanks so much for making it. A couple of takeaways from my recent experience with this: On the Silverado, prying the exhaust away from the pan was not necessary. A little wiggle and the pan came right out. Was surprised when only got six quarts to drain out. I thought it must have been underserviced last time, so I added seven. After warming the fluid and pulling the check plug, about a quart came out, so that was the correct amount. I understand the need to try and keep things clean, but the new pump for the new fluid seems like overkill to me when considering that with a pan drop, you’re only changing out less than half of the system’s fluid capacity, so I don’t feel that the residual “dirty” fluid in the pump would hurt anything. Once again, thanks. It was tremendously helpful.

Great video! My 2016 Escalade had the temperature fluctuating a few weeks ago and also started shaking when accelerating at around 65mph when it was below 1500 rpm. I actually received a letter from GM that my car may have this problem, but in order for the dealer to fix it free of charge, the error code needed to be present or the check engine light had to be on. Since my car didn’t present none of those. I was left with the only option. To do it myself. Your video helped me fix this issue thanks again!!!!

This is a a great video by all accounts and am very glad I found it. Was 8 quarts the magic # after the warm up? Update 07/11/22: It went just like the video said it would. I pumped out 6 quarts & put in 6 1/2. Ended up with about a cup out of the overflow after warm up. I was able to manipulate the pan in & out without using a pry bar, but watch your pan gasket. A 10mm ratcheting closed end wrench will be your friend on that heat shield. So far so good on performance without the clunks & fluctuations in the temperature gauge. I should mention the dealer switched the fluid over to Mobile 1 under warranty a few years ago as well. So we’ll see how long this lasts. Once again, thanks for the great content. I’d of never attempted this without it & assume I saved myself at least $500 @ the dealership.

The problem with the GM 8L90E transmission is not the Torque Converter or even the Fluid, believe it or NOT. For one, the transmission runs too hot for starters. The transmission thermostat bypass opens up about 194F degrees. Too damn HOT. The AFM System is what’s destroying these Torque Converters in my humble opinion respectfully. When the engine transitions back and forth from 8 to 4 & 4 to 8 cylinders, it significantly increases the TCC Desired Slip Rpm. I suspect GM engineers doing this to reduce vibration through the drivetrain for driver comfort at the expense of the Torque Converter it self. If the programming does not increase the TCC Desired Slip RPM during AFM, the customer would experience noticeable vibration every time the AFM engages. This act drastically wears out the Clutch lining inside the Torque Converter apply piston. The key to solving this issue if your transmission is not to far gone believe it or NOT is in the valve body and turning off AFM. The transmission valve body control the ENTIRE function of the transmission, to include the Torque Converter. There are 3 shift kits on the market that will absolutely eradicate this issue, if the transmission is still in good shape and not too far gone. These companies are SONNAX & TRANS GO I have personally myself installed and 😂combined 2 kits with a SONNAX TCC Kit and Shift Kit at 30,000 miles. I have 85,000 right now. Solved all my issues. Always remember that the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid, TCC Pressure Regulator Valve and Pressure Regulator Spring is what controls the Torque Converter mechanically and electronically thru PCM to TCM commands thru CAN BUS…. communications.

So I did not get the part that you said there is a wrong part (harness) as well. So you mean the transmission has 2 temperature sensors? one fits just under the filter inside the pan, but the other one fits inside the valve body? So how do we know which one is the faulty one? I did not know that. Please explain. Also, I do have the same problem on my C7 corvette with TFT sensor (Code P0711). So is the part number the same for my corvette or is it different? because my car has the same 8 speed transmission 8L90. Thank you.
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 6 ай бұрын
There are 2 available harnesses you can purchase. From the factory, the transmission should have a 2 piece harness. One piece is on top of the valve body and one under the valve body. You want to replace the bottom harness. If you purchase the “wrong harness” it will come as 1 piece instead of just the bottom price you need. That means you have to remove the valve body to replace the entire 2 pieces. If you purchase the “correct harness” you will only need to replace the bottom portion that has the temp sensor. Check the video description for the other channel who did the “wrong harness” if you want to see how that is done. It is the same 8l90 transmission, but I do not know any differences the corvette would have, so verify part numbers with your dealership
@ramindavani

The problem is that with the dealer they dont give you the option to talk to a service technician. every dealer has e few service advisers (AKA know nothing guys). They just ask you whats wrong with your car and they come back after a few minutes with a nonsense and the drealship astronomical fees. Its just straight up stupid. what is bothing me is that this car (corvette) should have specific corvette dealership. Most guys that work in dealerships know nothing about corvettes and that is sad. To be honest with you I dont know who I can trust and ask about what I really need for this car. For the harness that you mentioned someone actually told me that the correct part number is 24046895. So I have no way of confiming this because dealer dont talk to you about the specifics and thats why I believe they do things in the dark to charge corvette owners a fortune. Also, I believe most mechanics dont know what is involved in fixing this issue because they believe the valve body should be removed which is incorrect. As you said the TFT sensor is located at the buttom of the valve body under the filter inside the pan. Just out of curiosity what is the function of the other sensor that sits inside the valve body? Thanks.

@@ramindavani There have been a lot of revisions on the part so multiple part numbers may work. You just want to look at the harness you are buying and it’s apparent the 2 piece smaller portion over the larger 1 piece that has the large circular plug. When I pull up the part number you listed it looks like it’s just the lower harness and should work as the video shows. The only way to know is doing it and you may run into the corvette being different, the year of the corvette being different with changes. You’ll need to open it up to find out.

In the dash, I noticed your transmission temp was 0, presumably that sensor is what the dash is reading. Was it 0 because it wasn't warmed up or would it read 0 even when warmed up? I have a Foxwell scan tool and its reading -40F for the transmission fluid but my dash reads 125-150. Eventually the Foxwell read 160ish. Makes me think either my scan tool is reading the wrong value, the dash is a different temp sensor on the transmission(not the fluid but maybe the housing?) or my sensor is flaking out but not entirely dead yet. I got a P0711, couldn't clear it until a few drive cycles and then my scan tool let me clear it. Hasn't show up again, yet.

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Gotcha, I reached out to my scantool vendor (Foxwell) and it appears to be a bug in their code. They sent me a fix and I can read the numbers. Mine now reads ambient temperature or higher but it seems to take a long time to get up to temp. Took 15 minutes to get near 100 and then another 20-25 minutes to get into the 130 range. Almost seems like there is a thermostat somewhere like in the radiator that is stuck open. I recently had a coolant flush so I'm wondering if its related.

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Thanks for the quick response. I have not had much luck with my dealership recently. I just found out that replacing the harness isn't covered by the warranty and only covers serious mechanical issues, and the dealership hasn't been responsive about it. I also took a gamble and had it delivered sight unseen. I will say though it's in great shape, minus the occasional hard shifting due to the bad sensor. For the moment, the only code it's throwing is for a bad transmission fluid temperature sensor. If it's just that first harness though, I can attempt to replace it myself and save me 900 bucks, which is what one transmission shop wanted to charge me. I can't for the life of me find a reliable harness though. I'm seeing them on Amazon but I'm a little suspicious of the sellers as they seem to be sold out of China. If I could find both the two piece and one piece, I would even consider ordering both just in case. Either way, I need this fixed, I just spent 23,000 dollars on this a month ago, so I don't want a 2 ton paperweight sitting in the driveway while I drive my crappy 1999 grand caravan lol.

Of course the sooner the better. Mine had hard shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. Transmission cooler lines run from the radiator to the transmission so I don’t think it would run too hot but there may be a problem if it “thinks” it’s cold and try’s to operate the transmission under that info. I can’t tell you it’s safe but I can say I drove mine around town for a few months until the updated harness came in. That doesn’t mean it’s good or safe to do so, just saying what my situation was. I would for sure stay away from extended trips and towing until it’s repaired. Is yours the 8 speed?
