Excellent explanation of a transmission flush. They should be using your videos in autmotive trade schools. Many people take the car in for this and think it is just draining the fluid from the transmission, replacing the filter and adding back fluid. They therefore cannot understand why 1, it takes as long as it does and 2, why it cost want it does. Also, your tutorial and properly lifting the vehicle was great. Even us DIYers using a floor jack and jack stands can learn from this. Always pay attention to your lift points and jack stand positions. Thank for the education Ray.

Frankly, most transmission flush services ($300-500) don't even include dropping the pan & replacing the filter. I'm convinced automotive engineers have been instructed to make engines designed such that DIY repairs are next to impossible, so that dealerships can make exorbitant profits on repairs. The lack of a dip stick and drain plug on that transmission proves my point. The dealer wanted $630 to replace the clock spring wire on my wife's 2010 Camry steering wheel. "I'm convinced automotive engineers have been instructed to make engines designed such that DIY repairs are next to impossible, so that dealerships can make exorbitant profits on repairs." Its a perfectly logical statement, but for the most part, that's not how it works. Dealerships and manufacturers are enemies. They hate each other. Manufacturers want to pay out as little as possible for warranty and recalls, and the dealers want as much as they can get, because that's how they make money. When one looses the other wins. Any parts that are covered under warranty or recall, can't be thrown away. Dealers have to either save and store them, or ship them back. Once the manufacturers get their hands on the old parts, they go over them with a fine tooth comb in an attempt to get out of paying the dealer. So, the manufacturer never wants to work pricing to the dealers advantage, because while the vehicle is under warranty, they pay for the repairs, not the customers. "The lack of a dip stick and drain plug on that transmission proves my point." The dip stick is still there, you just don't know where to find it. As for the transmission drain plug, it depends on the design. Traditional RWD transmissions with the big, flat fluid pans never had them (Maybe there are a couple of exceptions that I'm not aware of. If there are any, they would be rare.). In order to drain all the fluid, you would have to jack the vehicle up on one end to tilt it so the fluid will run to the drain plug. Modern vehicles, like FWD, almost always have a drain plug, but the layout of the transmissions are completely different, so its not a problem with them. That said, you're right in that modern cars are very difficult to work on. For example, on the current gen Explorers, Ford pays 1.7 hours to set the transmission fluid level. And Ford is known for paying techs as little as possible. Just to compare, they pay 2.8 hours to pull and reinstall a dash board on some Fusions. 1.7 just to check the trans fluid is insane. The vehicle has to be running with a computer connected to the vehicle so the transmission fluid can be monitored in real time. It has to be between 206 and 212 degrees before you can do anything. The dipstick is in code, and you need the workshop manual to tell you where it needs to be. After you're done setting the level (with special expensive fluid), the vehicle has to be driven with a computer attached to is so you can run diagnostics and relearn. If you don't follow the procedure exactly, the trans won't work right, and you have to do it again. And that's just one example. Forget customers being able to work on cars. Every single say we get vehicles towed in from other shops that can't fix them. More often then not, the tow truck drivers can't even get the cars off the truck without help from us.

I used To wrench on construction equipment (nail guns, compressors, etc) and most have cheap cardboard type gaskets that are almost certain to tear upon removal. Some have the metal/rubber crush gaskets. They’re significantly more expensive, but you can usually reuse them several times before replacement. And some are even symmetrical and can be flipped and reused a couple more times. The biggest problem that I saw other than the cost was that people would over-torque the bolts and crush the metal.

Ever wonder why some cars have “lifetime transmission fluid” or "filled-for-life" or sealed transmission by design. Why need drain port/plug?
@chrisfreemesser5707 Жыл бұрын
It's intentional...by not having a drain plug it prevents the lazy from just draining the fluid and not also replacing the filter. Old aircooled VWs had kind of a similar arrangement for the oil pan and VW eventually removed the drain plug because people would drain the oil and not clean/replace the filter in the pan, and that would cause engine failures
@williameldridge9382 Жыл бұрын
@Ernest Sipes you are correct. However they design transmissions to last long enough that the life of vehicle itself is in question. They use statistics to make these decisions, and most people don't have their vehicles long enough to need to do a fluid exchange on them. Is it right? That's up for discussion obviously. But that's why they do it.

What we did with our transmission machine at the phone company. We hooked up the machine and ran the vehicle to drain the old fluid. Then we changed the filter because the pan was empty, and there was nothing to drain except for a little bit in the bottom, clean the pan, put the pan back up. Then, the machine automatically put the same amount of fluid that came out before the filter changed back into the transmission. After that we did the fluid exchange, it changed out 16 quarts or however much fluid you put in clean tank.

Rainman acquire the adapter. It fits quite a few Fords and there's millions on the road (from what i know they are your best selling trucks). I ain't from the US but the Fords we have here use the same arrangement on quite a few different transmissions. I do the service the other way flush then a filter but use the same fluid to top off at end, but I won't say your way is wrong just another way to "skin a cat" and you use more fluid. My train of thought is after the flush the remaining crud is in the filter and not within the internals so then to change the filter you remove the remaining crud. And yes I agree with the whole using that gasket again. The aftermarket ones are junk and some of the Ford pans have stamped on them that the gasket is reusable. Obviously if the gasket is 300k old and the rubber has no protrusion from the metal outside rim and is hard id replace it.

Great job Ray. I guess if l did an internet search about why they don't have drain plugs on transmission pans, there would probably be some lame cost effective reason. Actual reason is probably because they want to make the service as difficult as possible!

Probably a “easier to service” for better transmission live vs “easier to mistake trans plug for engine oil plug” resulting in occasional catastrophic stories of dry transmissions and overfilled engine oil.

Noooooo. These transmissions have a temperature control valve to keep fluid in transmission till it hits 190ish. And no there is no dipstick, just a stubby. I installed a B&M 22200 dipstick. Transmission temp needs to be 190, which when checking level with factory dipstick will get your arm burned from catalytic converter. Side note talking about 6r80.
@khakiswag Жыл бұрын
What he said. Ford service procedure for fluid change is just a drop and fill of the pan and flush only after a transmission failure. To flush you have to heat the fluid to 190+ for the internal thermostats to open.
@thesquirrelchroniclesakare7808 Жыл бұрын
You do realize the truck was running while performing this exchange right ?
@khakiswag Жыл бұрын
@@thesquirrelchroniclesakare7808 you do realize it takes a long time to get to 190 when driving it so how hot do you think it got idling for a few minutes. Also Ford states a heated fluid exchanger is required for a flush.
@thewausaudude Жыл бұрын
How was there any flow through the machine? I also thought the heat exchanger worked two ways, cooling it normally, but also heating during warm-up (at least for those of us not lucky enough to be somewhere warm like Florida right now lol)
@bat__bat Жыл бұрын
Yo he had flow from the trans pump while the truck was running. That flush machine wasn't running a pump. That evidence of flow completely supersedes your concerns that perhaps the trans coolant thermostat was shut bc it didn't reach 190 F. Obviously it reached 190, or more likely, removing the coolant lines at that engine coolant heat exchanger junction also took this alleged thermostat temperature control doohickey out of the loop. If the doohickey is inside the trans and not at the heat exchanger, then obviously the trans met 190, opened for flow, and allowed the machine to fulfill its task.

Nice video Ray. Love watching you pour from big containers into smaller ones. I know I would have spilled or knocked the gallon jug over. Perhaps you could find a drain pan with graduated marks(if you could trust them) and eliminate the cumbersome pour. Nice that you could use the same gasket. Never liked the rubber and especially dislike cork. Love that BG machine. Wish you were located in Ocala.
@teevis3620 Жыл бұрын
He needs to upgrade to a catch pan that is enclosed with a funnel type neck so that pouring fluid prohibits any un necessary spillage/ overfill. Those open type catch pans are usefully in some cases, however l've found them to be slow and messy if you're attempting to measure the volume of liquid in them the way he was doing with the empty oil pack bottle.

Is it always wise to a flush? The reason I ask is, on a high mileage vehicle that’s never had the transmission serviced, I’ve been taught that on such a vehicle, you change the filter but put the old fluid back in. Reason being, if the fluid is changed, the transmission could start slipping. What’s your opinion Ray?
@jdmforever5583 Жыл бұрын
You are exactly right, it's definitely not a good idea flushing a transmission that the fluid hasn't been changed, in fact I wouldn't flush any transmission even on regular maintenance, I would just drain new filter and new oil that's it
