It is also one of South Africa's switching points between 3000v and 25 000v electric locomotives. These 3 locomotives are operating on 3000v and the loco's at the far back on 25 000v. The loud noise you hear is the inverter-powered traction motor blowers which activate whenever any electrical equipment onboard gets hot or whenever the train departs.
