🔵 Moldova’s Transnistria region is an unrecognised breakaway republic. Its origins are related to the Russian Empire and Bessarabia and during the times of the Soviet Union it was part of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. After the fall of the USSR it had disputed status. This led to war in Moldova. Transnistria had independence due to support from Russia and this continues to this day. Russia’s Gazprom provides gas to Transnistria for free. The start of the Russian war in Ukraine caused problems in Chisinau-Tiraspol relations.
🔵 How long can Transnistria retain its separation? Are there already signs of power shifting to Chisinau? Do big business and corruption play a role in the process? Kamil Całus, OSW Senior Fellow at the Department for Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova explains Transnistria.
