With such a high proportion of its military tied up in Ukraine Russia is not well placed to embark on a real confrontation with NATO, especially a NATO recently enhanced by the addition of Finland and Sweden. However, between now and the US presidential election we can expect Russia to fabricate increased tension, so Trump can play the card, "This wouldn't happen on my watch; it's because Biden is so weak." Russia desperately wants Trump back in the White House because (a) he is a fool whom Putin can easily manipulate as he did during his last term, and (b) Trump is the worst type of American isolationist who would undermine NATO cohesion even without direction from Moscow.
