I've always liked how Tails' perspective made Eggman sound way more menacing. That line he says during the fight, "I'll make mince meat out of you." Is genuinely terrifying and what I imagine a child would come up with when faced with danger.

@@Transparencyboo Although some of those events get into an argument on what really happened, it wouldn't be fair to only have Sonic's account be validated, as Tails' story mentioned saving Station Square from Eggman;s missile, which turned out to be true in Adventure 2, as Tails got a Chaos Emerald for such an achievement.

Something I always liked that adds to each characters perspective is their unique narration if you quit a characters story mid way through then re-enter it. When you do that you get a brief page reminding you about the most recent story event, but notably they're written from the characters perspective and sometimes contain neat perspective details you might not notice otherwise. An example: Sonic wasn't really listening to Tails talk about his upgraded plane after Emerald Coast, he just appreciated his passion for tech while zoning out, only really hearing Tails ask him to visit his workshop. These are in Adventure 2 as well, fully voice acted unlike Adventure 1, and they even tell you about events prior to what we see in game, neat stuff. (Something else just as neat is the idle chatter for each character in each stage but that's not as in depth.)

I'm amazed you didn't even mention the NPCs around the game that have their own little stories going on in the background. It only adds to the theme of perspective, since you could easily miss parts of their stories if you aren't paying attention or actively looking for them, while from their perspectives at most they're just confused about the story you play through (they'll just be like "woah, I saw a giant ship in the sky. I wonder what it is?" with the Egg Carrier instead of perceiving it as a threat like the main characters do).

Hehe, it's all about pacing you know. Sometimes you just have to kill your darlings to make the video more 'clean' and keep the flow going. We simply decided to specifically talk about the playable characters this time around because it made the script work a bit better for us. But it is a good point either way.

Thank you so much for this video. So much of these points are thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head for years! Through what have been probably dozens of playthroughs, I knew Sonic Adventure was communicating something very meaningful and deep. It's why I kept coming back and always have felt a strange allure that I felt less so for its sequel, which (sadly, I think to its detriment) streamlined the whole multiple perspectives angle. I feel Tails' desire for self-acceptance and betterment thay comes from having Sonic as a role model. I feel Amy's desire for excitement in what's seemingly a mundane life that turns into a realization that one must give their own life meaning through actualization of one's own passions into achieving self made goals. I feel Knuckles' existential ponderings on his role in this world and the recontextualization of this same role when one is forced by circumstance to go and experience unknown and seemingly chaotic scenarios. I empathize with Gamma in his realization that the assignment of your role given to you through your upbringing may be entirely contrary to your true thoughts and feelings (can Gamma be read as trans allegory? haha probably not). I.... envy? Big's unquestionable assurance that he knows exactly his place in the world and his undying and unbetrayed faith in the friend he wants to share it with. Finally, I've opened my heart (ha ha) to the dangers of holding onto the unresolved bitterness and hatred of my past trauma and letting it color the perceptions and actions I take in the present. Thank you Sonic Adventure, and thank you for this video.

I never knew why I had this extreme fascination with SA1. I didn't have a Dreamcast, so I played this series the only way a little girl with a Gamecube was able to: SA2 -> SA1. Yet, I had known about SA1. I had played it before at a friend's house and I was always extremely enamored with it, especially because of the 6 characters. I used to think it was only because I enjoyed how many different gameplay styles there was there, and that is certainly still true. But I think, even to my non-english speaking young self, the concept of having 6 characters experience the same story differently was always incredibly fascinating, and I love how this video made me think more about it and more on why I still think it's a brilliant game. This video was an absolute joy, thank you for making it!!

Stuff like this is what makes Sonic Adventure my favorite Sonic game. Normally when games do a “See the same story from different perspectives” thing, it might be kinda heavy-handed and gimmicky, something to put on the back of the box. This game does it so much more subtly and gracefully. The game still calls them “Stories” but most would probably just view it as a catchy name used as a vessel to just play some levels as a different character. The story isn’t even the real main focus, this is a fun platform game where you go zoom and jump around, but the story is both very solid and entertaining while also being mostly un-intrusive to the gameplay and game design. I love it and I love this video! Great work, you just earned a new subscriber!

This is probably the first time I've heard Sonic Adventure explained in a way that makes me think "I should play that" Sonic Mania is my main point of reference for the franchise, which is all but devoid of story and themes. Hearing SA described this way has really helped me appreciate this other side of the franchise though. I can see why so many people are enamored with it.

As usual we can't promise you'll love it yourself, but I think a lot of it comes down to perspective too. Sonic Adventure is a janky ass game from the late 90', it takes some getting used to. I've done it myself and felt really good There's something amazing about interpreting a story in a unique way. In Sonic Adventure's case we don't necessarily think it's all unintentional, but there certainly are things that probably were, haha. It's a bit of a mish-mash. wonderful video! I had always thought of the events in this game not as something thats happening in the moment as you play, but instead something thats being told back to you about by the individual characters, like you said as an unreliable testimony. All those little inconsistencies were great to see being talked about, but you added so much more extra depth to it, rather than just stating this and leaving it as that, you got so much additional meaning out of it that makes me appreciate the way this game's story is put together even more

I also think some of the inconsistencies in Tails' story stem from the fact that he's only 8. How many of us remember those years precisely? Given his strong desire to be a hero on his own merits, it's not too surprising that he'd mistakenly remember himself as having a more active role. A fun tidbit a lot of people don't know about is that if you fall too far behind in a "race" against Sonic, he'll actually stop and wait for you to catch up. Not enough to let you win, but enough that he won't kill his little brother's confidence by blowing him out of the water--either that or he just doesn't want the kid to fall too far behind because he wants to keep an eye on him. The fact that it's not even acknowledged in Sonic's objectives just shows how natural this tendency is for him. Am I reading too much into the A.I.? Maybe, but I think it's adorable.

I love you. But no seriously, really well done! I've always loved the subtle differences in the story in sonic adventure, it gives the game a unique voice in terms of writing that I don't think they've delivered on anything comparable since. It's really nice to see analysis of sonic adventure that goes deeper than the "sonic adventure is actually BAD/actually GOOD" discourse that I see so frequently. Course, I'm incredibly biased. Adventure was my first sonic game after an early childhood of watching the cartoons, so it holds a special place in my heart. Admittedly I probably wouldn't have even caught on to these subtleties had I picked the game up as an adult, I just wouldn't have the patience to watch those cutscenes now. Regardless, making you question the validity of the narrator is even now something reserved for narrative and art focused experiences, so the fact that a mainstream sonic title did so near the series peak is super admirable. Subbed for sure!

Haha, hey, thanks! Glad you liked it so much! The whole discourse around this game being good or bad is basically part of the reason we wanted to make it actually, in fact that often fuels us in a way, haha. i'm surprised you didn't mention my favorite little dialogue difference! It's when the heroes confront Eggman outside Tails's workshop. In Sonic's story, Eggman greets both of them with "Well, if it isn't Sonic!" In Tails's story, it's a little different: "Well, if it isn't Sonic and Tails!" From Sonic's view, Tails isn't even important enough to mention. But from Tails's view, Eggman views him as one of the heroes... second in the list, but still! It's the line that first got me thinking about this stuff way back when, so thank you for giving me a more thorough view on all of this, and for enlightening everyone else on it too. ❤

Making videos is pretty hard sometimes, you gotta kill your darlings a lot to keep a good pace basically. If we could we would add a heck ton more quotes, but there are just so many to choose from. So in the end something has to be cut, and honestly it is probably for the best. It is fun when the audience gets a chance to share their own favourites and really add to the video in a natural way. Like you did now, thank you :)

completely tangential comment: gamma's story has given me thoughts about omega (from later games), recently namely, that while gamma seemed of the opinion that it was better there be a small bird who was once gamma, than there be gamma who was once a small bird, omega instead seems to be Fine With This which will probably never be "officially" explored but i absolutely love to think about just an edgy trans robot (i refuse to consider a lack of any small bird being involved in omega's core, simply because that would be so much less interesting)

i think the sad truth really is that there's no bird inside of gamma, or at the very least, he was designed with a back-up power source or upgraded to no longer need one at some point. in sonic 06, there's a point that reveals omega will at some point sit in standby for roughly 200 years before awakening to assist shadow in the future. the only other alternative i can reasonably see here is that eggman designs his machines to effectively put the animal in a cryosleep state should the robot go into standby. which imo is honestly reasonable, but i'm not confident in believing it was the original intent, sadly.

Eggman-robots in general weren't powered by animals anymore after SA2, except in Lost World and the mobile games. Even if Omega had a bird inside of him, his character has nothing to do with it anyhow. The only connection between him and what happened in Adventure is that he uses Gamma and Beta as benchmarks to surpass.(When one gets the lowest rank in Heroes, he comments on it)

I can barely tell where the satire and the more legitimate analysis divide… and I feel like many in the comments section missed the tongue in cheek nature of the whole thing, but the goofiness of taking all this so seriously didn’t stop you from having something genuine to say about all this. I kinda love it.

Haha, thank you! I really liked the comment. We're 100% genuine about our analysis in these videos, basically we don't say anything that we don't believe to be a legitimate reading on our part. At the same time we're very self-aware about the subject matter. You kind of have to be a bit goofy to ease people into your "deep analysis" about something like Sonic the Hedgehog I suppose, haha. The tongue in cheek stuff is just sort of a presentation we have developed over time really. It's a lot of fun to us.

I will never understand people who think Sonic Adventure is a bad game. But even despite all of its flaws, it's impossible to deny the amount of intricate interwoven details in every character's perspective of the story. They had no business making such a clever way of storytelling, yet they did. Adventure tends to get buried under the much "better" games like S3&K, SA2, Heroes, and Unleashed. So I'm glad you covered one of the most unique aspects of that game that I think even SA2 misses, as much as I love that game too.

You know, at this point it kind of doesn't matter if Sonic Adventure is good/bad. It's kind of a boring conclusion to come to in a video, because in the end, as a piece of art, Sonic Adventure is super interesting and valuable in its own right. Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts

The game also involves the player through the Chao Gardens, as the Chao are a background element that the characters never interact with in the story, yet form the foundation for Choas' motivation. It is their peaceful integration into modern society that finally convinces Chaos to rest, but only the player will see that integration through the gardens, needing to participate in a side activity outside of the character's personal lives to understand what Tikal means by the end.

This is exactly why I always loved Sonic Adventure, and never really understood why so many did not. Ironically, the part about so many others just taking everything at face value was the biggest, most informative part from my perspective. Because somehow, despite so much of the game being commentary ABOUT how different perspectives can be about the same events, I never considered the possibility that people DIDN'T see that depth, that from their perspective the game was literally just repeating the exact same cutscenes and that they weren't simply being dismissive when saying that. I missed others' perspectives about a piece of media... about perspectives.
@UnluckySuperstition
@UnluckySuperstition 2 жыл бұрын
It can also be hard to expect that kind of thing from a younger audience that plays or has played it. Like when I was little I certainly didn't understand (at least fully) that everyone's different stories had perspective biases, for me it just seemed like jumping from one persons view to the next without issues of perspective or interpretation being different. Obviously there were big concepts that stood out like Tails' perspective litterally being Sonic's story and battles against Eggman and it being a struggle for the want to be like Sonic, but the other subtler things like dialogue differences in cutscenes, camera perspectives in them and the different speech intonations were usually above my head until I looked back later in life and thought deeper into it.

I have some tremendous nostalgia goggles and love for Both Adventure 1 and 2 gameplay wise and story presentation wise, as they were both my first and continue to be my favorite Sonic games -as a young child (having been 5 or six when my parents got me the GameCube port of 2 in 2006ish and later on adventure 1). So I have a particular fondness and connection to the characters and their presentations in these games the most. Particularly with Amy, I've always liked Amy's s story growing up because for me (having only ever seen met these characters in these two games at that point in my life) she felt like me in a way. She was dealing with a large bout of boredom and mundanity, and out of nowhere -our- her favorite person in the world suddenly comes along looking cool as ever (after a scary encounter with a robot trying to hurt you and a new bird friend) and life just feels great and exciting again. Of course, she always liked Sonic so shes ecstatic about being around a person she has an interest in, but her story perspective also sets up that she has a really big sense of trust in him to be able keep people safe, and so her first action after meeting Sonic again -and fangirling- was to try to get Sonic to look after Birdie for Birdie's safety, before he ultimately rejects the offer and ends up getting lost (or just lagging behind Amy's own escape) in Twinkle park, and then Amy takes the burden on completely without anymore fuss. And so after starting off on her adventure to help Birdie it really started resonating with me that she was someone I really did connect with and as a result really grew to respect as a character and person. She respected, loved and got to interact with the coolest person and heor in the world, but as soon as It was clear that he wasn't available to help with her problems she took them on full force as best she could herself, and made sure she was the protector of Birdie; and while it might be silly to look at her willingness to protect something that seems incredibly insignificant by comparison to everything else going on, because after all "it's just a bird"; she didn't even once treat the situation or Birdie like that at all. She treats Birdie as a *person*, and in fact is the only one out of all of her encounters with her friends, enemies and everyone else to do such a thing. She gives Birdie her full attention, treats them as a ***_person_* and asks about their well being, their condition and actively strives to find the root problem and resolve it. And then actively tries her best to help them find their family again after learning that Birdie was trying to find them. She was willing to endure both complete capture as Eggmans prisoner on the Egg Carrier, while still actively shielding Birdie from Gama, despite the peril she could have potentially been in if she refused, and then returned later to the stranded Egg Carrier, all because there was a chance Birdies family couod still be aboard it somewhere. Amy put herself in mortal danger multiple times not to save the world from Eggman or mortal peril, but all for the sake of a person that no one else was even willing to give the time of day to acknowledge- whether it was a circumstantial problem like Sonic's pressing issues to stop Eggman, or otherwise just no one else caring to look or listen to either Birdie or Amy's plights. She actively took upon a heroic and selfless role that both endangered herself and Birdie, and that led to her _willingly_ throwing herself into the maws of danger by going to the most dangerous locations at both of the bases of Eggman on the egg carrier and the mystic ruins base (though she never directly interacted with Eggman himself, she was still all up in his business and actively pursued by an actively malicious robot) if there was even a chance that Birdie's family was trapped in one of those locations. Amy's story in Adventure 1 truly is an act of true heroism, and I get it now, It's _Respect_ I feel for her. All the while during the blatant work that Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and even Omega were going through to stop Eggman, Chaos and their bull, which is heroic in itself; Amy in turn became the hero that Sonic has always been to her the defender of the defenseless, helping a person or people who no one else could... Or would. And when Sonic ultimately failed to be there to help someone that she herself saw and truly acknowledged was in desperate need, she immediately stepped up to the challenge and took on the mantle and all the unexpected dangers that came with it -->completely outside all of the other characters knowledge -And she took it all in stride for a complete stranger who couldn't even speak to her, and had no ability to help themselves. And by the very end the cementing lines for me and her was that she made a promise to herself, not to get 'Sonic to love her' (as you might expect from a character poised in the begining as a silly overbearing crush and possible hindrance to Sonic) but to get Sonic to _respect_ her. She was a parallel to Sonic alot like how Tails was- Someone caught in a Hero's shadow, and seeming to need to depend on him to save the day for them, but unlike Tails who gained his courage through the encouragement of an outside audience cheering him on during the last fight with Eggman; Amy both saved the life of her little companion and reunited them with their family without anybody else every learning or seeing her actions, and she still succeeded and she still proved to herself that she is capable of being her own savior and a protector to others. And she grew enough to recognize that she was someone that didn't need to glom onto a hero to have him save herself and others, she has the power all on her own to make a difference, and above all else at the end of the day, crushes aside, she desires most that the people she looks up to the most don't love her in a superficial way, but really and truly _respect her_ as a person that can be relied on as capable and competent because she won't be their pearl. And I truly think that the music associated with her represents that greatly as well, as it transitions from this near obsessive form of admiration and lust for Sonic to a continuous beat of "I will be there for you' and 'I won't be your Pearl'
