Transparent Toilets In Tokyo

How would you feel about going about your business in a transparent toilet? As part of a new initiative run by The Nippon Foundation called 'Tokyo Toilet Project', these new transparent toilets in Shibuya are designed to allow users to see inside before using them to check they are clean & safe. When you lock the door though, the glass instantly turns opaque, and you can then use the facility in complete privacy!

Except they do! It's called PDLC Film. And you can buy it at lowes or other home good stores and apply them to doors and windows. I've got some it's really God damn cool.

for people worried about power messing with the transparency, the glass is originally opaque.. meaning that for the glass to be transparent, there has to be a voltage applied.. if the power somehow goes out, the glass returns to its normal state, which is opaque.

I remember seeing this technology on TV in the Nineties as a kid. It's still not cheap, but you can get a switchable transparency foil covering your existing window for about the price of a smartphone now.

It's called Switch glass. This material. Works on voltage basis, becomes transparent when voltage is applied. Japan leading the way woah *Edit* : The replies are mostly on what happens on power failure. Going by how smart glasses work, non-transparency is the default state, so we still good there. But we don't know how far 'no-malfunctions' are guaranteed. So use one if you trust the technology. xD

I’m a bit surprised that the idea was partially because public toilets were considered dark, dirty, smelly, and scary. I visited Japan in 2016 for 2.5 weeks and I have never in my life seen more clean and inviting public toilets anywhere that I’ve visited in the US or Europe. Heck! My high school’s bathrooms were places of horror and devastation!!! You definitely held it until you got home, if you could. Not sure if anything changed in Japan between 2016 and 2020, when this video came out. The only place where the public toilet was more of what I expect (not that great) was in the countryside. But clearly, they don’t have the same kind of money as the cities. But it was still definitely clean. I took a lot of pictures of the beautiful public toilets I visited to show friends and family when I got home. Trust me, they were shocked and astounded! 😀😀

The cloudy/opaque glass is the natural state with NO power. In order for it to be clear, it has to have power. So there's ZERO chance of it going clear mid poo. Lol
