Transplanting David Austin Shrub Rose from Container to Ground

It is absolutely recommended that we disturb the root ball as little as possible when transplanting. However, in this video you’ll see me removing the original soil from the root ball, distrubing it quiet a bit as a result. I wanted to see how much or how big the roots grew in a single growing season (I planted this rose from bare root). I also wanted to gauge how long the rose can stay in this size container before it becomes root bound. My guess is around 3 years or three growing seasons.
On a side note, my Harlow Carr did go into transplant shock as expected. It spent late fall through winter (Nov-Feb) sleeping and recovering and today (March 11) it has awakened and beginning to leaf out.
Thank you to the viewer who asked me why I removed the original soil since it disturbed the root ball - a very good point indeed. I should’ve explained my reason in the video.

Well done. When you work in your garden you can feel your muscles. But it will get better and you will get stronger. I used to go to a fitness studio at least 5 times a week and I think I was quite fit when I got the garden I could not believe that my muscles were hurting. After a few years of working in the garden I feel really strong 💪

Very true! I used to always tell people physical strength wasn’t one of my attributes until I fell in love with gardening. Now I know I do have it in me to constantly dig, pull, lift and repeat until I’m satisfied. I may be small but I am strong thanks to this passion to grow things 🌱🌸🌿

Just wonder why you removed all the soil from the roots? It is recommended to leave as much soil as possible. And generally don’t destruct root ball. That is how you can minimize transplant shock

That is very true and normally I wouldn’t tease or touch the original soil at all. I wanted to see how big the roots have grown in one growing season (I planted this from bare roots) also to gauge how long I can keep all these roses in these containers before they become really root bound - my guess is 3 years. Oh I totally feel your pain as I went through the exact same thing. This was a new house and yard too. Let me tell you that I was that close to giving up mid project. The digging was so straining on my back and joints. But also, let me say that once you get through it, the reward is tremendous and abundant! Have you thought about raised beds or containers? That’s in case you decide you really really don’t wanna dig. In my case, I decided to push through with the digging. My advice is to go slow and start with trees and large shrubs because that’ll be the structure of your garden. You’ll have to put in a lot of thoughts as to where you wanna place each tree and shrub because once planted, they’re hard to move. So I say start with them. In just a few seasons they’ll give you shapes, heights, and shades. Most of your hard work will be with those guys because of the digging but once that’s done, the rest are kind of like fillers. You can do that gradually and each season you can easily move them around if you don’t like where you planted them before. About the rocks, I’m pretty sure it’s not just you and me. I once heard a friend say that these rocks are volcanic rocks because we live in WA and everyone’s in the same situation. I’m not sure how true it is. I suspect that when they built my development, they just dumped a bunch of rocks in the foundation before they built on top because there were that many rocks I had to dig up. It was unbelievable! I have pictures of a huge pile of big rocks that filled up my concrete patio somewhere when I first started. But what we’re blessed with here in PNW is free rainwater… so I guess something’s gotta give 😔 Remember to go at your pace. Start with just a few things each season. Plants grow so fast and they can get pretty big over time. My mistake was I bought young plants not knowing they’d soon outgrow their spot. I could have filled my entire garden with just half of the plants I purchased if I had allowed myself to be patient. Best of luck 🌸🌿🌹🪴

Put some gravel first under the roots of the plants when you do planting they really likes it and they grow faster and stronger ☝🖐atsuuup 👍

You would have eliminated plant transplant shock if you had took the rose with its dirt ball and planted in the ground instead of knocking the dirt off the roots which damages the roots.

Hi, thank you for your comment and yes you’re absolutely right! I was aware of this too but this was when curiosity got the better of me I’m afraid. I really wanted to see how much the roots had grown in one year. And it did suffer from transplant shock quite a bit - producing only 5 or 6 good flowers that season.

It did especially with roses. How much or little I amend the soil depends on the plant. Roses will grow in any soil as long as it’s not waterlogged and will perform exceptionally well if it’s rich in nutrients. Plus these roses are $30+ a plant so I want to maximize my success. If I were planting lavender for example, I do close to nothing to amend the soil as lavender like poor soil. I just dig a hole slightly bigger than the rootball and that’s it. I don’t even worry about small rocks in soil either as these plants do well in both poor and rocky soil.
