Thank you for this video. It gave me some ideas of how to get this to work without stressing out the plant. And, I just recently did this successfully with a hydro pepper plant. No shock. No lost leaves. Here's how I did it: I carefully removed the plant from the net pot and pulled the hydroponic roots through the holes in the bottom of the plant pot, backfilled with quality non-wood bark soil, raised the pot above the tray I planned to let it sit on (using flat rocks about a couple of inches thick) so that the hydro roots had about an inch of space to sit in the water and still have airspace. I then added water to the tray (not enough to touch the bottom of the pot, though, and leaving an air gap). This allowed the plant to establish roots in the soil while still receiving the hydro nutrients from the water in the tray. Then I slowly started watering at the top of the pot, into the soil, and reduced the water to the tray until the hydroponic roots air-pruned themselves. It's doing so well, today I transplanted another pepper plant using the same method.

Khang, since your hydro plant had loads of leaves and was in a moisture rich environment, I reckon you may have had better results if you treat the hydro plant like you treat cuttings e.g. Keep cuttings in a moist environment and remove some leaves to reduce loss of water through leaf perspiration and reduce the work the stem needs to so it doesn't have to suck up so much water. If you think about it you did as much as you could to increase loss of water via perspiration by putting the plant outside which increases the rate of perspiration. The plant shred leaves because it can't suck up water faster than it's losing water via leaf perspiration during the transplant adaptation stage. Next time you try this, put a poly bag around the plant to maintain a moist environment to keep the leaves happy and perhaps trim the plant so the plant can put more energy into developing a root structure for it's new soil medium rather than working overtime trying to pump water to the leaves. As far as the flower is concerned, I'm second guessing the plant has produced a flower because it's stressed and is going to seed.

I know this is an old video, but if you ever have to get roots through a hole like that: cut a trashbag or old plastic bag into 3" ribbons, wrap the roots to make a cable of sorts, just tight enough to fit through the hole. It helps to protect them from scraping the sides.

I transplanted a ghost pepper plant out of an aerogarden when it was maybe 5 inches tall cause the other two plants were overtaking it very quickly, I took no precautions as I didn't know I needed to. It never looked unhealthy or shed it's leaves, however it's been about a month and it has not really grown at all. It's putting out buds but its still only 5 inches tall. What the heck is going on here? My only thought is that it may be too cold where it is now but I'm unsure.
@KhangStarr7 жыл бұрын
Cooler temperature will affect the grow. Also, don't water too often once it recovered. Use soft soil that allows roots to travel easily and give it plenty of sun.

Zac Crow I think it's probably a combination of cool temps and it being rootbound, I actually put it in a pot under another much bigger grow light in my basement cause it's too cold in my area right now to put outside and my only windows with good light are already filled with plants! This is my first season where I am both propagating my own seeds as well as starting them indoors, so I guess I should expect some hardships. Your videos have really helped Khang Starr and you're definitely one of the best gardening/pepper youtubers I have come across

In the double cup method, if you are feeding hydroponic nutrients, should you also take the same precautions and feed them little water for a week before transplanting?

Khang, I just transplanted my Jolokias from dwc to soil, all indoors. The plants were 2 feet diameter and 1.5 height. Growing fast too. Now after six days, they are still shedding leaves, likely for another week. Moist soil and feeding water from below. They are pretty mad. It seems you went to the outdoors and kept it there. Mine are staying indoors for another 3 months. They will be big and have lots of time for recovery. Your video was helpful because it kept me from stressing on my plants transition. Did yours start really turning around after a month?
@KhangStarr7 жыл бұрын
It should be less than 1 month. The reason mine took so long was because I did it during the cold month. If your temperature is warm, it's way faster.

I got a chili plant and it was Root bound so I transplanted it in the process I had to cut the roof from the ball just so that it can grow out I didn't cut them off just cut around the ball and so I replanted it in a bigger pot and it dropped all the leaves and little leaves tiny little chili leaves came out and started to curl and now it just stayed like that did it stunts The Chilli plant?
@frik4frak8 ай бұрын
When you root it, rather than put the cutting in something with those little holes, why not just put it in a regular pot that will hold water, then when the cuttings are arranged to look nice, just fill the pot with those clay hydroponic rocks. When you do that, you can never underwater or overwater it and it won't get bugs like it can in dirt. When the water gets low, just fill it back up with water. If you want to eventually put it in a bigger pot, all you have to do is lift it out of the smaller pot and put it in a larger pot and fill it with those stones so the plant will be supported and stand up. It's easier because no bugs and no underwatering or overwatering it. If I have a plant that I tend to under or over water it, I'll just root it in water and then do this, put it in the pot with the stones that support it and just fill the pot with water until the water gets low and then refill it with water. So much easier than a dirt plant.

Have you tried transplanting soft plants like herbs from hydro to soil? I've tried that with Italian, Thai and Holy basils without success. Any suggestions?
@KhangStarr7 жыл бұрын
Basil are super easy to transplant. You can actually cut a branch off and put it in soil and it will grow. When transplanting basil, make sure the soil is nice and fluffy, not compacted. Keep the soil moist and they should be fine. Don't allow them to be under extreme heat.
@frik4frak8 ай бұрын
I thought when you rooted a cutting in water, the roots were water roots. Isn't hydroponics just a cutting in water and you add those hydroponic clay stones to hold the cutting in place and then fill the pot with water. It would still be a cutting in water, it just will be supported by the clay stones. Then all you have to do is watch the water level and fill it back up with water when it gets low. You can never under or overwater it. So, if they are the same as cuttings rooted in water with water roots, why couldn't they be transplanted in soil and grow in soil?

Hi ypu are my favorite and am learning a lot before I venture into it. have a question though. how do you know how much to water once u transplant in a pot ? for that matter how much water should I use ? as much as it starts to drain? Or how do I know the soil is moist enough for the plant that it should not rot due to excessive water. . Thanks for your posts it's awesome
@KhangStarr7 жыл бұрын
When you transplant this way, it needs to be a little more moist than usual, but not runny wet, the plant needs to breath. Also, the most important thing is to keep it out of direct sunlight until it recovered. If you do this, it will recover way faster than mine. The reason mine too so long was because I did it in March when it was pretty cold. Good luck!

I've found that lots of time is important to round out and mellow the flavors. My best batches have been from cutting the peppers into strips and drying, then adding vinegar, sugar, garlic, fruits, and other flavors and give them at least a month in the fridge. For the first weeks you check and add liquid (more vinegar, water, or whatever it tastes like it needs but don't stress getting it perfect because flavor will keep developing). Oh, and plums are everywhere growing and make a great base for the sambal, adding sweetness, tart, and balance. I pick a bucketful just walking around the block (I'm in Oregon). Other fruit help too and over time mellow into the flavor of the sambals. Biggest thing is time. I actually try to stay a year ahead on my sambals (and mustard). If you're worried about preservation, citric acid is really cheap, sometimes I use xanthum gum to thicken and fill in the spaces and top jar with a bit of oil to seal from air.
