On my one cross country trip in an EV, I'd say half of my stops were at Walmart. The company adding more charging nationwide is just smart. You have to keep yourself entertained while the car charges, so might as well do some light shopping in the Walmart.

Funny story about something like that in the UK. There are a lot of supermarkets with car chargers that are constantly out-of-order. They aren't actually broken. Supermarkets installed them some years back when electricity was cheap, for the same reason Walmart did: People would come to charge, and do their shopping while they wait. The extra shopping would outweigh the very small cost of electricity. Then Putin decided to start a war, energy prices shot up, and the price of electricity with it - by more than 600%, without the protection of the price cap that applies only to residential service. Suddenly that 'free' charging was costing a lot of money! But there was no way to charge for it because the charging stations physically didn't have the hardware for payment processing. So the manager has to go around the back and yank the big circuit breaker switch, then send someone to put 'out of order' signs on all the chargers.

What would be really sexy is if they were to supplement chargers with covered parking for all their stores with solar panels on top, along with maybe a couple of container batteries. Then they could power their stores and their Chargers essentially for free most days. At the very least it would work great out here in sunny Arizona, and also people wouldn't be walking out to 150° F steering wheels and car seats in the summer.
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 7 ай бұрын
@@darthsirrius You've got to make the business case though. Yes, it saves money in the long run - but that might take ten years. A 20% RoI is a great investment, but will the store even be there that long? Big chains close and open stores a lot on that time scale, as the business environment shifts.

At the supermarket where I do my weekly grocery run they have a gasl station on the exit from the parking lots where I used to fill up my car on the way back to my home. Now I "fill" up my cars batteries at the charging station in front of the market while I am shopping. It actually saves some time! Especially on Fridays the gas station is pretty busy and you have to queue up for the pump and then at the cashiers. Oh! Charging is not free!

It's nice to hear rational explanations for things that are disturbing but shouldn't be. I have an SUV who's paint job is a dark metallic maroon. When I was cleaning last year in preparation for sealing it, I was surprised to find how much embedded dirt and iron contamination there was of the surface. CyberTrucks are "rust magnets" just like dark painted cars are dust magnets. ANY exposed non-noble metal surface would have similar contamination. "Stainless" steel isn't. If an owner wants stainless steel to continue to look shiny and bright rather than develop the dull grayish tan protective patina that stainless steel will develop, they will clean and apply some kind of sealant to it as part of scheduled maintenance.

Stainless does NOT mean stain proof. I work in construction and there's a reason it's used in only certain applications. Having a clear coat on a car is one way car manufacturers prevent oxidation (i.e. rust).

DeLorean had DuPont develop beautiful clear color paint that apparently looked fantastic. However, it was never deployed because it would only last about 4-5 years before it peeled off the stainless. It's likely this is still the case, that paints of any kind, inlcuding clear coats, won't bond properly to stainless. Stainless doesn't "rust" in the same way that regular carbon steel does. Generally, "rust" on stainless is caused by contaminents and metals on the surface that get wet. You can alleviate this to some degree by passivating the metal - which creates a non-rustforming oxide layer. I have no idea if this oxide layer is durable. Stainless in general is a bad choice for automotive bodywork use.

Wherever you have two dissimilar metals touching with moisture present will form a galvanic corrosion cell and rust. Anyone who has left random metal stuff in their wet stainless kitchen sink for long enough already knows that and the joys of using scouring pads to buff it out. If you don't want rusty dots on your stainless steel panels, put some car wax on so rain and metallic dust doesn't sit directly on the steel.

@teardowndan5364
@teardowndan5364 7 ай бұрын
@@transportevolved You do have current: when two dissimilar metals (stainless steel and whatever may be in airborne dust) in contact with each other, you get a galvanic potential. Once you add acid rain or other electrolyte to shuttle ions, you also get a galvanic current between the sides of the metallic dust particle and surrounding stainless steel surface. The physical path length doesn't matter much here, only its existence. Regarding the long physical path, you were likely thinking about something else like ground loops where the amount of EMI and parasitic current getting induced in or transmitted by it scales with the loop's enclosed area. Yes, this can contribute to galvanic corrosion by adding external energy to the process but isn't necessary.

Until they can produce the batteries cleanly, recycle them cleanly, and produce electricity cleanly, we won't be transitioning any time soon. Currently the cleanest way to generate electricity is nuclear and it scares people so we won't be building more of those plants. Every other "clean" electricity generator costs way too much and also isn't 100% clean. We need to solve all that first before pushing this EV agenda (and this is coming from an EV driver).

The Tesla cyber truck rusting is most likely a passivation. Finished stainless steel parts have to be passivated to be completely rust free. Passivation removes Iron particles from the surface and enhances the chromium oxide layer that makes it rust free.
@avsystem3142
@avsystem3142 7 ай бұрын
Correct. Rust resistance in SST alloys is dependent of the chromium content. However, that doesn't mean that SST won't discolor when exposed to reagents (acids and bases). The 303/304 SST typically used for household items is moderately stain resistant. For commercial and industrial use 316 SST is used for greater stain resistance. It has a higher chromium content and is more expensive. Some years ago I designed a a product used for chemical analysis of certain fluids. I specified a large plate of 316 SST to which various components were attached. The process used strong acids and bases. After introduction the research department complained that the SST plate was becoming discolored and unattractive. I was required to specify that the SST part be painted (epoxy paint) so it maintained a better appearance.

I don't know what the characteristics of the Cybertruck stainless steel are, but the right variant will look good for a seriously long time. DeLorean bodies still look just fine, despite being 40+ years old. This was from back when a regular steel car body would be rusting out in 10 years. Is the Cybertruck stainless showing rust in less than a year? I doubt it, even if it's a flawed stainless blend. I'd be more inclined to believe it's just FUD as there's a lot of that going around right now.

EV charging stations are a truly missing opportunity. You have a capturee population who must wait for their car to charge. If course you offer bathrooms and coffee for sale. But you can also offer meals, snack, a pass to use the wifi, an arcade, and more. Then you offer up the ad space since you have generally a higher income population there to advertise to that is stuck there for a longer time. I am surprised no one has done this on a larger scale.

I think the issue is going to be the rate of customer flow through the station. A gas station can cycle over a hundred people through the doors in an hour. Quick stop type amenities will begin to make sense at fast charging sites when the number of dispensers gets to be more than a couple dozen, and especially after charging speeds have gotten significantly higher. Until then, the better match for charging sites will be shopping centers and grocery stores and entertainment centers.

What I actually see is coworkers that purchase scooter and e-bikes that exceed both speed limits and their abilities while they often wear insufficient protective gear and ride very poorly while wearing ear buds and playing music. Most of them have had crashes resulting in injuries and then blame the vehicles for being dangerous. I don't know how to make them understand that you must ride understanding there is a real risk and that you should plan for a crash to attempt to avoid one. Were issues related to new model growing pains? The sort that all new models suffer? They said that E.V.s wear through tires more quickly - more quickly than what? - My Leaf is on the same tires it had when I bought it used 5 years ago (I fit winter tires every winter). How does E.V. tire wear compare to the large pickups and SUVs we see so much of on roads, especially in North America? Some SS panels on the Cybertruck do have a tan patina which could be called rust. You can see that the panels do not match in many photos because some panels do not have the patina. Maybe it’s because some coils of material were more exposed to the elements before manufacturing. At any rate, on KZbin, Out of Spec Detailing demonstrated how to clean off the patina with Bar Keeper’s Friend. The Cybertruck panels will probably require periodic maintenance to keep them looking brand new (actually better than new lol). I imagine some owners will be less diligent in maintaining a patina free finish. No big deal if all the panels have a slight tan finish over time, as long as they match.

6:30 The irony of the footage supplied by Joby Aviation featuring trains: the medium-haul flight killer. E-VTOL crafts will not be used for long-haul flights (unless Solid state batteries get really good).

Will E-VTOL even be used for medium-haul flights? Toronto-to-Montreal looks to be out of reach for the next couple decades at least. I think the point of that footage linking passenger trains and the Joby air taxi was that the train would bring you the few hundred kilometers of a city-to-city trip, and the E-VTOL would mean you didn't have to deal with city ground traffic. To me it seems wrong-headed -- just do city transit better? -- but I'm not an oil prince.

I have a spoiler alert for you. Stainless steel is exactly what it says it it is.. It is STAINLESS. That means it is less staining. It doesn’t mean it won’t rust. It won’t rust as fast as mild steel. It will still have rust and pitting over time. Just not as rapidly as unprotected mild steel does. So even with rust spots on stainless steel it will lest far longer the mild steel will exposed to the elements. Think of it as patina.

It's probably just "Rail Dust". If you've ever owned a white car, you've probably seen it. It isn't the car rusting. It's iron particle sticking to the paint (Stainless in this case), that are rusting. I had a white car and noticed the little orange spots. Normal washing wouldn't clean them. I used something like Iron X to dissolve them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXi1i4aKj5JlqtE

That reliability survey is dubious. Logically hybrids should be the least reliable as they need both powertrains to work to be usable. And studies so far showed the same thing. And recently the media started to aggressively push hybrids again, because the legacy automakers can't sell their EVs. This coincidence is too convenient .

I base this opinion purely on the number of TEN reports which relate to the U.K. (I appreciate that the show is U.S. orientated) compared to the news from the rest of the world and from other news sources. Am I wrong? Is there an ulterior reason that the U.K. lags behind?

I know many manufactures are happy for their cars to move when no-one is sitting in the driver's seat but toyota seem to be the worst. Their Priuses do this too. It's so stupid.

I don't recall the alloy designation but it isn't a 300 series SST. Even high chromium 316 SST will discolor when exposed to acids and bases but won't actually rust. I think the generally public generally conflates any discoloration or staining of metals with "rust", even though it isn't.

i like the idea of kids over 12 doing some kind of online course for safety. Seems like piles of kids got ebikes for christmas here in australia. I imagine there has been an increase in emergency room visits as a result. It's awesome that kids can get out and about, far better than sitting in a cave gaming too much, but given the younger ones are not very risk averse, probably good that the grown ups set some perameters for safety.

@@transportevolved, do you mean the different kinds of steel particles all over our roadways and environment? That is the particulate attached to the truck's skin (you can also see it on the clear coat of other vehicles). Once it attaches, you can't stop the electrical reaction since there is NO clear coat. If the particle weakens the chromium oxide protective layer of the stainless steel, it will corrode faster. Since the truck has no clear coat, it is making direct contact.

It’s with great sadness & concern, that I hear the report of EV resources around the cost of California. As you just know, the government will promise much to Native Americans - with every intention of breaking all of those promises. And in the many decades to come, will eventually and begrudgingly apologise about any wrongdoing. However, the damage will be done and any financial recompense due, will never fully be paid, if at all. And one way or another, the succession of non-Native American governments, that hold sway twix now and then, will put the blame on the Native Americans themselves.
