A historical recreation in 1:1 scale, based on the Ordnance Survey Revisions of 1898, of a time when a London based commuter railway extended its operations 50 miles into the heart of rural Buckinghamshire. We travel on a Metropolitan Railway goods train running non-stop from the sidings at Verney Junction to the goods yard at Aylesbury.
After a bit of a gap, KZbin have enabled the subtitles. There is no HD version because I foolishly recorded in 720p and unless there is massive demand for it, I shall not rerecord.

One thing your models illustrate is how "hill-and-dale" the old Great Central was. Apparently, the grades on the London Extension of the GCR were steep and frequent enough that they would have caused trouble if the GCR had run longer freight trains. This kind of construction by the MR saved them a lot of money, of course.

I wasn't aware of this but surely the main section from Quainton southwards was fairly straightforward for heavy trains?

@@anthonyguter - The issue is the effect of the short up and down grades on the MR on loose coupled goods trains of the time. On a long train, the front part of the train is pressing against the locomotive, the rear part of the train is stretched tight on a downgrade, and in the middle, cars are being pulled in both directions. This is why railroads with long goods trains prefer to avoid a roller-coaster mainline profile. In addition, passenger trains are designed to not have much slack between cars, so no one is jerked out of their seat when the slack is suddenly pulled tight. L.T.C. Rolt related in "The Pre-Grouping Railways", Volume 2., that the GCR would have been challenged if its goods trains on the London Extension# had been longer

Thanks. I owe it all to a few history books and, of course, to the Internet.

A great recreation. It is interesting to see how Verney Junction changed from c1900 to around 1930s when I am modelling it

Very Impressed with your work. I have recently become interested in the lines in this area from travelling regularly on Chiltern Trains. I was also lucky enough to travel on the special train a few years ago from Aylesbury to Bicester Village via Claydon

Nice video. Just found it. I have the game and love watching recreations like these. I hope you will show more of the actual building of the line and any other lines you may do in the future.

I'm not a natural video-maker and the guys like Construction Gamer and Hans Dampf are way out of my league. I'll have to stick to the finished product.

Lovely videos! Do you have any plans to cover the railways around High Wycombe and Princes Risborough?

Hi Anthony … another great video - just love the trips. How easy would it be to recreate but with today’s constructions and layouts? Obviously a little artistic licence, but I reckon would complete the circle of the MR!

Today's constructions? You mean the East-West railway and HS2? I don't really want to go there.

Problem there is the lack of decent British-style houses, shops and general buildings on TF2. Also, putting in endless houses and gardens is quite tedious. I'm currently doing it for the Uxbridge and Amersham branches and it's slow work.

lt does seem from what l see here, that there was no physical rail connection between the Met and LNWR lines? If so, there seems little point in such an extensive Met goods facility
@anthonyguter

Actually there was, to the west of Verney, one of the Met lines connected to the LNWR. It is shown on the OS map of 1898. I didn't feature it in the video.

Génial ! Superbe ! What is the mod for the telegraph pole ? can you telle me how do you do to have your fences so "parallel" to the railroad tracks ?
@anthonyguter
@anthonyguter Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The mod is Powerlines by Snowball on transportfever.net Fences are laid using skully's fences mod on Steam. I lay them in long straight lines or curves and they usually snap nicely to match the tracks.
