Considering this was made about a decade ago, its a very good movie. This subject was and still is very stigmatized, so the fact that this topic is even covered is great and ahead of its time for a kdrama. Not to mention ist pretty old so we have got to appreciate it for what it is.

@AutoDriver4000 Well how likely are you to see LGBTQ characters in korean dramas? Name more than 5 lgbtq characters in kdramas that are important characters quick! Pretending like anything LGBTQ related still isn't a taboo in especially kdramas is really odd, this has nothing to do with western fragility lmao, it's just facts. Btw this isn't even a kdrama but a movie, and korean movies are far less conservative and more likely to contain heavier topics, scenes, and LGBTQ themes than kdramas.

Y’all this is a decade old! We cannot demand things from the past to match up with current western society. That is so entitled and privileged within itself. We cannot critique this Korean film as Americans for not living up to our current standards.
@warmlavender5525
@warmlavender5525 4 жыл бұрын
It’s fine to critique things even if they’re from the past. You can still enjoy it but critique is allowed that’s not racist. There are plenty of people in Korean society who knew that transphobia was wrong 10 years ago. Just because it’s older doesn’t make it suddenly right.
@kymea10
@kymea10 4 жыл бұрын
WarmLavender I didn’t say it was racist. You can critique however all criticism isn’t good criticism and sometimes ppl making these criticism can make false implications based off of assumptions. You gotta consider the time period and then remember that this from a culture outside of our own. The western world sees the rest of the world as an extension of itself. To me it’s just virtue signaling to apply American 2020 social palatability to a south East Asian film from a decade ago. My problem is not with the criticism but how people are criticizing and taking an almost xenophobic self righteous stance.
@warmlavender5525
@warmlavender5525 4 жыл бұрын
kymea sorry I should’ve said xenophobic not racist about putting it to Western standards. Yes I am a 2nd gen immigrant to the US I understand being judged by Western vs outside standards. But stuff like transphobia is not something about “social palatability” but rather an issue that effects a lot of people. Toni Morrison’s essay on judging past media and people on things such as racism & transphobia also applies to this. I don’t know what others are saying in the comments but I don’t think it’s wrong to make valid critiques of past media. Just because “Birth of a Nation” for example was a product of its time but it’s bad not just cause it doesn’t fit it’s standards today but because it’s always been bad.
@kymea10
@kymea10 4 жыл бұрын
WarmLavender transphobia is definitely an important issue! I just think westerners sometimes over step their boundaries in how they speak about these global issues. I think It’s important to hear these criticism from trans Korean and cis Korean folk as this film reflects them directly. It eliminates the xenophobia and we can hear the voices that are directly impacted and reflected from this film.

@@Nat-eb7yg In my opinion, transwoman at the end of the day are just women. If we shoehole then like then then it becomes a situation where will be treating transwoman as seperate from ciswoman. I respect the choice if they had representation from trans community but in my opinion they just cast a woman in the role of a woman. I just wish that trans actors can similarily get more cis gendered roles because although they do retain a few characteristics from their biological sex, most of them can look and play the part of the or cis gendered counterparts.

@loltadynicneni913
@loltadynicneni913 3 жыл бұрын
@@CybrV-1 Yeah but it depends on the role and how much of the past of the character is in the movie and how late the transition happened and the abilities of actors. For example, in Danish Girl I totally didn't mind because 1. Eddie killed it as Lilli, 2. They needed a male actor to portray a full transition starting with a male body. And it was beautifully done. In here, the actress (sorry, I don't know her name) isn't that far from looking like a boy when she crossdresses and there are only some flashbacks and she portrays the character as an awkward, cute, kind of chaotic woman. Which is awesome and I love her personality. So it just depends on the situation, it wouldn't work out if Lilli Elbe was portrayed by a woman in Danish Girl, would it?

This is basically a Korean friendly VERSION of the movie ‘TRANSAMERICA’ (2005), . 😂 Ppl talking about this is ahead of its time. 🤣 Y’all must be Generation Z ☠️ If you are truly well versed in pop culture you’d realize a lot of Korean pop/movie culture recycles a lot of things from other pop cultures particularly in the West and just revamps it to make it Korean culture friendly. Which is not a bad thing, but calling them innovative it a stretch. This is probably gonna offend a lot of koreaboos 😬

I don't know why you had to put the trans there, a woman is a woman and it doesn't matter if they were born genetically male, they're prettier just because they are. It's like saying a girl is good at a sport for a girl, it makes it seem like just because they are a girl, trans, ECT that it's harder to be something. The actor may not actually be trans, but a woman can be prettier than you just because she prettier than you and it isn't any harder just because a person's trans.
