Next time, visit Poenari Castle, near Arges. It's the true Dracula castle, in ruins, but worth the climb for the beautiful view and authentic history. (Not many tourists also!)

Finally someone giving good advice :) Castle Bran is truly a tourist trap mostly because of all the Hollywood legends with vampires. Bran and Vlad The Impaler had nothing to do with vampires, not even in our Romanian legends. In fact Vlad the Impaler was a hero, since he was one of the fairest princess we had. He was executing only the nation's enemies by impaling them because he wanted to make an example of them. Plus most of the horrific stories were spread by him just so that his enemies would think twice before trying anything. Pretty effective if you ask me.

Well, it wasn't that effective since the Ottomans ultimately won, and Vlad was imprisoned and later killed in battle. Furthermore, Hollywood is only basing it's movies off of the lore created by Bram Stoker, who was an English an author, not a Hollywood screen writer.

As long as you watch your bag, it's safe. Because it's such a forgotten country you won't have problems with terrorists and it's super cheap too, if you come from a rich country.

It's generally very safe. Just stay away from gypsies, beggars and shady areas. Taxi drivers will try to rip you off. The larger the city, the more dangers, just like everywhere else, but really, nothing serious. Trains are crap. Best option, IMO, is to rent a car to travel around the country. It's the easiest this way. I'd say Romania is safer than most countries.

There is a book on the rulers of Wallachia, I forget the name of the book, where Stoker got the name. Vlad was never in that castle, he was imprisoned in Corvin or Hunedoara Castle.

Vlad is the reason Europe is still a Christian continent. He impaled over 10,000 Turks in such a way that they would involuntarily twitch (dance) as the pole slid up through their bodies. He would give them water to extend their misery and the birds would peck their eyes out while still alive. Many took +3 days to die on a 25 foot pole as they slowly slid down it until it came out of their body near the head. Imagine if you were a soldier and walked through that nightmarish scene of your fellow brothers in arms dying slowly. It took the fight out of them and they retreated back to Turkey saving Europe from Islam-afication. Now the EU leaders just import them in. I am sad Romania joined the EU and it has some of the most beautiful women in the world. Transylvania is a must see. If you go to Bran castle, ask for the historian and learn the real truth about Vlad.

It's funny you put this scary music especially since in Romania Bran castle is more known as a place when Queen Marie used to stay (it eventually became her private property when the people of Brasov gave it to her) than for Dracula or Vlad Tepes. He's more associated with Poenari Citadel and Sighisoara. Btw, the queen was of British origin :)

Actually. Dracula is the name romanian people gave to Vlad the Empealor because his father because hwas part of the Order of the Dragon (because people weren't really smart at that time they misunderstood dragon with devil (sound quite similar in romanian)) after Vlad's death in the Bran Castle weird noises started to occur and other weird stuff started to happen (can't remember what exactly rn) and people thought he transformed into a vampire (because of his blood lust during life and so on).

you've got some mixed info ..dracula is the myth created by Bram Stoker...and Vlad Tepes's father was vlad the 2nd also known as Vlad Dracul....dracul in Romanian means the devil.you are right about the name dracul coming from the order of the dragon he received in 1431...as for one of his sons Vlad the impaler, he was a brilliant warrior and knew how to make a name for himself...remember the ottomans were a constant threat and always outnumbering the Romanians so he made a name for himself as the empalor to strike fear on his enemies ..it was a psychological game...if i din't explained it too well here is a much more helpful link :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_II_Dracul all the best

Vlad was a Wallahian (Principality of Wallachia) Voievod (principe), he was not a prince... he was not romanian... romania formed on 24.01.1859 ... it became a kingdom in 1881 and had a king ... Vlad the Impalor lived from around 1428 to 1476 ... The Wallahian and Moldavian voievods defended the european christains from the Ottoman muslims for over 500 years...
