As you discussed aphids I was thinking to myself: I never seem to have aphids. Then you mentioned blackberries as a trap crop, and I have a billion wild blackberries all over the yard. It makes sense now!

Exactly David! I bet that's where they all go!!!

Great timing on this subject!!! I usually have dill and carrot flowers for trapping aphids. Brussel sprouts are another aphid magnet ... unfortunately

I love my nasturtiums! They have beautiful flowers even though they are being eaten as an attractor crop for slugs and aphids. I also use mustard greens to attract slugs and aphids
@TheRipeTomatoFarms7 ай бұрын
Totally agree....they are still beautiful, even when they are getting demolished! LOL

Nice one! I normally just call them sacrificial plants, but yep this works for insect pests and hungry critters. I know I'm tempting fate by saying it, but I've never had much trouble with aphids in the veg garden. They seem to prefer the roses growing out front. Great video!

Easter lily traps for asian red beetles. Didn't know I had them. Munching and mating no more. Thank you. Now I will take good care for traps Beet greens and swiss chard that over wintered.

EXCELLENT timing as always - started blue hubbards last month to protect my butternut and zukes and was debating where to plant them. THANKS AGAIN FOR ANOTHER PERFECTLY TIMED VID.

Not technically a trap crop but when ever i harvest rhubarb, i lay the cut of leaves out in areas prone to slugs and snails. when i pick the leaves up the next day, you can be sure that there are some on or under the leaves and i just pick them off and dispose of them. I normally put them in the composter but we have had so many of them this year!

While there are many drawbacks to gardening in Zone 3, I have to say I wouldn’t trade my relatively bug-free garden for better weather!

Another great thing to grow with your veggies is wild painted daisies. They are bi-colored and if you plant them in your vegetable garden, you won't get horn worms on your tomatoes or other pests. If you soak the flower heads in rubbing alcohol, you have your own pesticide that is 100% natural. I've been growing them for years and swear by them
@astatine00857 ай бұрын
I’m starting to appreciate them (bugs) too.

Any thoughts on reducing pill bugs in raised beds. They are getting out of control in mine. I've looked up some natural ways to deal with this issue. I just wanted to know what you recommend.

Do you think it’s fine to let Shasta daisies take the hit for the team? So far only my daisies are getting the critter infestation but the veggies seem fine.

I wonder if it would work to use trap crops to lure all the pests into one spot, then use a soap spray on them so the dead pests will attract their natural predators.

* Question * Does Neem Oil also drive away the beneficial insects?
@CmdrSoCal7 ай бұрын
Seems like that would attract and breed the bad bugs. Plants like clover attract good bugs especially lady bugs. There are good bug attractants. Codling moth traps work great, I have caught hundreds with those. Tanglefoot tree glue stops aphids on fruit trees easy. Gardening Zone has good stuff.

I couldn't plan for the one pest that ruined my garden... humans 😞 I had some theives steal random things from my yard, including dumping my garlic out to steal the cheap pot and leave them in a pile of soil 😢

I prefer not to attract more pests to my garden than necessary. It's like setting up a Japanese beetle trap in your yard. All they do is attract Japanese beetles from the entire neighborhood to your property. Why attract something in order to keep it away? Why not just keep it away to begin with?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms7 ай бұрын
Trap crops don't tend to attract extra pests from afar... They just redirect the ones that are ALREADY in your garden. Good luck "keeping it away to begin with".... If that were possible, it would be a trillion dollar method
