In my country its actually illegal to break off the claws of the crab, and throw it back out, alive. The crab uses its claws to eat, and defend itself, so when you remove both, they have a high chance of dying.. Slowly. From hunger. Or if they are lucky, you break it off at the wrong spot, so they bleed out quicker. Its a dumb practice that simply doesnt work for the intented purpose.

@HunterBidenscrack9 ай бұрын
Leaving one claw leads to a higher mortality rate.
@billlee17249 ай бұрын
Leaving one claw makes the crab think it’s still capable of defense and hunting but it’s severely compromised missing a claw. When you take both the crab goes into scavenger mode and eats food off the bottom, stops hunting and stops picking fights lol. Taking one is only for females.
@Sniperboy55519 ай бұрын
@HunterBidenscrack That’s not true, but taking both claws doesn’t increase the mortality rate enough to justify only taking one. If you take one, take two because the statistics support it. One claw is about 50/50 mortality. If taking the second claw only raises mortality to 80%, take two. The math works out, especially since females (which are protected) produce a ton of baby crabs, but they only need one male. I’ve been drinking, but I’m pretty sure that’s basically how it works.

The mortality stats vary quite a bit depending on which study you look at. The current system works, so why change it? Even a declawed male crab can still reproduce and they don’t harvest from egg-bearing females. 20% survive, so I don’t see how it’s a waste when the ones that die end up back in the food chain anyway. I’m not good at articulating the rationale, but it makes sense. They’ve done plenty of statistical analysis in implementing the policy.

Hogfish is amazing but Maine lobster is better than spiny

Love seafood, but i hate ordering cold seafood platters, i call it the Lazy chefs meal, because its mostly just boiled or steam then chilled served with various sauces.

Crabs without claws have 80percent mortality rate. What's next shark fin in Hong Kong?

The mortality rate for the stone crabs just makes this barbarism tragic. Also the studies on pain and suffering of the crabs are very worrying. This is undoubtedly a very immoral practice

I’m from the Florida Keys. And definitely I think stone crab and the Florida lobster is better. But I have never had soft shell crab before so that’s next on my eats list!
