I taught for 36 years.,.the education system is trash. I retired because I ethically couldn't stand it anymore. Still loved my students but in high school...you could get one B any semester and an F with a 0 the other three and still earn the credit. You could miss 150 days and still pass to the next grade. All you had to do was call in at 3 and say here...and then do whatever...some of my students would laugh and say...they were watching a movie ..hanging out with friends ..some say they were at work...but no school work was being done. I asked several about grades/attendance and they said think about it...if you were a teen and could get away with all of this wouldn't you? I probably would. We need to stop this bs.

I'm retired, but I worked in Silicon Valley for almost thirty years. I'm by no means the brightest bulb in the pack. I did product testing and Quality assurance. My co-workers ranged from brilliant to kind of dim. The H1B program allows some really incredible people to come over from foreign countries. It is also regularly abused to bring in cheaper workers. However, if you look at the real movers and drivers in tech, they are often foreign born. Meritocracy is far more important than country of origin. Does the system need to be reformed? Yes. Does hiring American citizens matter? Yes. Asking someone to train their replacements because those replacements will work cheaper is foul, and I saw it done many times. I believe that the hiring of citizens should be prioritized, but I also believe that bringing in the best and brightest from other places is essential to the growth of both the economy and the country.

The United States was in fact pushing Americans towards the Jobs they worked for. However when those people got their title, they found out pretty quickly how competitive it was on top. And all there was avaliable was a "immigrant-job" for them to do. I now understand why some of my co-workers were college graduates. Considering me being a school drop-out, it was pretty eye opening.
@dinamazzarella59603 күн бұрын
Kennedy, like Vivek and MUSK, is FOS. Several years ago, I worked in DC at the USPTO. The vast VAST majority of tech workers were INDIAN. While I am NOT opposed to working with H1B people, there is LITERALLY NO REASON to choose these people over those within our own country, unless the intent is to choose CHEAP LABOR. Especially now, when much of the TECH Industry is laying off, AMERICAN CITIZENS should be provided full employment BEFORE we issue H1B VISAs to those who would take AMERICAN jobs. The majority of the H1Bs I worked with were in no way technically on par with the skill levels of their American counterparts. The same is true of NURSING imported from Eastern countries. I have personally seen this in a Scranton PA hospital. They are put through an additional 1-2 years of training first, are paid much less, and are abusively overworked. And remember, as H1B people need to be FULLY VETTED and provided with varying levels of Security Clearances, you cannot easily vet foreigners. This creates another security hole, essentially enabling access to the US infrastructure for those who have NO real dog in the fight; so big BIG security threat.

If there is a shortage of STEM talent in the US it's because of the flood of cheaper foreign workers that displaced American talent over the last 20 years who were replaced and the tech job market is so flooded with H-1Bs Americans are at the back of very long lines to even get interviewed. Why would anyone major in computer science when they saw their highly qualified parents get laid off and having to train their cheaper less qualified Indian replacements? Same in healthcare. Plus, they tend to hire their own.

In NYC almost every high-school graduates pursue a social service degree. When I try talking to them about an engineering degree they refuse to listen. Now that being said not too many American high school students have the mathematical or science skills needed to pursue an engineering degree. The schools in most Democratic party-controlled cities rather teach students about homosexuality and low-level degrees in social working environments. You can't find a teacher who encourages students to pursue engineering degrees. Example: I decided to get a digital forensics degree and my class started around 40 students. By the end of the year, there was only 8 of us left. And we lost all those students in part because they couldn't keep up with the advanced calculus and trigonometry needed to succeed in that field. So when I asked them why they quit their responses were I didn't take calculus or trigonometry in school or they flunked math and barely passed.

When I was a grad student in computer science, I was usually the only female. Working as a computer programmer, I was often the only female. It's a bit better now, but it is a very male oriented field. I often saw ads for programming jobs, with absurd requirements, like 5 years experience in JAVA, when that language was only 3 years old. The reason for these ads was, companies were required to post them for 6 months, before they could hire an H1B worker. But, those foreign workers didn't meet the impossible requirements, like American engineers had to. We also had foreign programming students, in grad school. Some were okay, others were garbage. This one Iranian fellow, who supposedly had a BA in CS, couldn't get his code to work, so asked me to help him. He didn't even know what a case statement was. Many foreign universities are not producing the best and brightest, just the cheapest.

I live in a small city in Massachusetts where roughly 60% of the people have been in this country for 20 years. Out of that 60% about 40% of them immediately applied for SSDI and used the emotional problems routine because it's nearly impossible to give a yes or no diagnosis. That being said, I now live in a city where 40%+ will never have to work a day in their life, they have the best healthcare if treated in this state, food stamps, and $1500 cash refund every march for your utility bills. Because I worked 45 years and only collect the Social Security I paid into, I still live only 5 thousand dollars a year abouve the poverty level and pay for everything no refunds, nothing. I know dozens of these immigrants and that panel is correct. Neithet them or their 5 children families can barely speak english let alone spell a 5 letter word.

Thanks to Hollywood for glorifying athletes and leisurely attending school w/o any real consequences. Everyone wants to win the popularity contest and still move into college and then a job based on looks alone. The best engineers are those you support and follow through their education growth. The problem with H1B, is that on paper they look good, but the reality is not what it seems. Why would their country let them go, if they are so good ?

The quality of US education has declined. I started noticing it in the early 90s. I have 2 questions that may explain why this decline is going on: 1. What was the quality of US education prior to 1979, when the Department of Education was started? 2. Why was the Department of Education started? I ask these questions as someone who started school in 1980, after the DOE was established.

In the 1940s-50s people were told that the country needed steel workers, farmers, transcriptionists, seamstresses, warriors, farmers, engineers, etc. In the 1960s-70s people were told to protest and rebel against institutions of all kinds (this is also when Marxism took a foot hold in the universities). In the 1980s-90s people were told that everyone HAD TO HAVE a college education or wouldn’t amount to anything. I’m the 2000s-2010s people were told they HAD TO HAVE a masters degree in order to be competitive in the workforce. In the 2020s people are being told that the educational system is broken and needs to be reformed. It’s interesting how the system has gotten worse after the country emphasized the need for it. Maybe we should go back to seeing what the country NEEDS for it’s survival and production, and then incentivize those professions? Then we can defund the programs that don’t produce return on investment.

We do NOT NEED H1-B visas, we just need a corporate system that is AMERICA FIRST. I worked for MERCK-MEDCO in the Hackensack area appx 20 years ago (they are now separated), and was told that I had to train my (and two other workers) H1-B IT replacements. All 3 of us were replaced by 7, YES SEVEN, INDIANS. These "REPLACEMENTS" were almost completely IGNORANT of IT hardware, software, CONCEPTS, and policies. They were paid appx 1/3 of my compensation, given a monthly food and clothing allowance as well as a place to live free of charge. Does this sound like they were highly skilled like the falsehoods spouted by MUSK and RAMASWAMI. All companies that SUPPOSEDLY cannot find the correct level of skills in AMERICAN WORKERS should FIRST have to go through a special office of vetting where the office should first look at LinkedIn to find those skilled AMERICAN WORKERS, and if they do, the corporations should also be heavily fined for attempting these shenanigans. Otherwise, we AMERICANS end up with a lopsided corporate AMERICA looking like GOOGLE and KZbin. MAGA should stand for MAKE AMERICANS GREAT AGAIN (first), NOT AMERICA (with a dash of H1-Bs) FIRST.

Idk about Ramaswami, but Musk's point was that *he* got in on an H1B visa (and has not been here for 10 years yet so he's not yet a citizen) and so he likes the program. He feels that without it, people like him would be unfairly excluded, which is true, but far too many abuse the system to hire more workers for less wages. It definitely needs to be reformed.
@dinamazzarella59602 күн бұрын
@@joumero7493 Not so fast. AS MUSK IS exceptional, THERE'S no reason WHY any other exceptional someone WHO HAS A SKILL THAT CORPORATE CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE IN THE USA cannot be allowed in. But, when all you are importing is a group of individuals, who at best, have questionable skills in IT or anything else, just because they will work on the cheap, that is where the line is drawn. And remember that MUSK, like Vivek, are entrepreneurs, NOT someone who is looking to TAKE AMERICAN JOBS, but instead MAKE AMERICAN JOBS; that is, unless Americans allow them to eschew American workers for CHEAP and underwhelmingly skilled labor from India or wherever. The H1B should be put to use ONLY for the EXCEPTIONS, and should not be used for the usual case.

I have to take issue with Katie's perspective on STEM education. There are some awesome engineering programs around the country that aren't named MIT such as Georgia Tech, Cal Tech, Perdue and even 2nd or 3rd tier schools are turning out some fine engineers. I have a BS in Computer Science from Florida State and an MS from U. of FL. While I know they don't have the cachet of the top STEM schools I found I was prepared to compete against Software Engineers from better programs. In theory the idea behind the H-1B is great; however, there is too much leeway for abuse and allow companies to just hire engineers for salaries. I think companies should also be required to make good faith efforts to hire from the domestic market before falling back on the H-1B pipeline.

All we do is “teach to the state test” and the kids hate it. We hate it. When the kids are having fun…. they learn 10x’s more. Most teachers are not “woke”. We are just trying to do out best with what we have. I honestly would love for them to restructure the entire education system.

The thing that gets me is times have changed but the material the college chooses as the class requirement of that class is many times not that good of quality or the publisher of the texted used in class is not the teachers preference or the material is not quality of information needed to be learned. In talking to these teacher outside of classes has verified this several years , at least 15- 20 years. Teacher instructors are stuck with the crap of book material and have little say so over the material to cover that subject matter.

It’s not about “one or the other” or “one against the other” or “left vs right”. PS) If we simply honestly study good/best practices in various areas among our extensive allies/partners and remember some history, all the “solutions” are usually already “there”. 🧐
