to repeat myself: I always found Deruth's parenting to be interesting. Like, he's emotionally neglective, but in a way that isn't 'lol, I don't care about my son so I'll ignore him'. It seems more like he has no idea to actually interact with him (or perhaps he didn't trust himself/thought so badly about himself that he thought he'd just fuck up- Cale's self-depreciation could be genetic lol) and so just gave him money. And/or maybe because he's such a brilliant lord, he was always great with money and used it and business as a way to channel himself and jsut thought it was a thing you do. He may have thought, 'hey, he may be drunk right NOW, but give it a few more years and he'll be investing and creating an alcohol industry (like cousin Diluc!) in no time!'

I 100% agree. I've always been confused on where to lump Deruth in, the bad manhwa dads or the good ones. Like, he's not a horrible father. You can see he does care for Cale and wishes the best for his safety, especially in the novel, but at the same time, he's also neglective. I mean, I understand you are suffering from your wife's death, but that doesn't justify the fact that your son also needs an emotional support and you chose to ignore him. So that's why Deruth is such a confusing character to me. I cant put label him as a shitty dad because he's not entirely horrible, but I also cannot call him a good dad either

Ironically like OG Cale, who really wanted to do his best to be a good brother and son and became a drunkard to support Bassen’s heir status when the poor boy just wanted to have his brother like him iirc. Seeing tries to help Cale but just dumps money on him rather than giving him emotional support. Honestly, Viola must’ve had her hands full.

I believe that Deruth, while a shit father, had tried/is trying. He's trying to late of course and he'll never actually reconcile with OgCale, but it's not like he knows that though. Part of the reason that Deruth started actually trying, is because Cale is much more approachable after transmigration. From what Cale said, the Henituse and OgCale treated each other like strangers, and Deruth had lost the connection with his son because he was so depressed from Jour's death, so Deruth believed that OgCale would just somehow realise that Deruth cares. Deruth didn't do anything for Cale, didn't raise him, didn't watch over him, nothing a father should be doing, but when he realised that he fucked up, he decided that OgCale being trash is a coping mechanism for OgCale and so Deruth should support him in emoting, the way OgCale had helped him back then by hugging him. Obviously that didn't do shit because he just assumed what Cale is going through and didn't ask anything. While I understand that Deruth had been devestated after Jour's death, so had OgCale. They should've grieved together and become closer, but instead Deruth just couldn't even face his son and holed himself up in his office. It's not that he doesn't care it's just that he couldn't process anything, and while that is true Deruth is the adult and a parent first and foremost. His son is his responsibility and his main priority, whatever the circumstances. It's fine for him to grieve, but he has a fucking child that lost his mother. Not knwing how to cope and being lost is fine, but you have to try. TRY. Have meals with your son, help him, cherish him, comfort him even when you yourself need comfort. My father is similar to Deruth in that I know he cares, he just sucks at showing it. And while that is fine, I suffer now, just as Cale had, because those feelings of being lost and feeling betrayed by a father don't just resolve themselves when OgCale realises that father did care. The wound is there even if you put a plaster on it made from comforting words. It takes time to heal and OgCale had no time for that, trying to help Basen get accepted and following a plan he made at 8, because he knows his reputation is ruined anyway. Sorry for the rant, but Deruth is so frustrating, because I know he means well, MEANT WELL and it all went wrong because of the decisions he made and the actions he took/didn't take. He fucked up even if he did mean well. And now, there's no way to fix that.
