This MTD Snowblower was trashed but it has good bones!
Can we save it?
Let me show you how to refurbish this machine on a budget with some simple tools.

14:35 "Let me show you". YESSSSS!!! That's what I've been waiting for, Arch! Explaining exactly what tools you're using (to get the surface down to where it's ready for paint prep)! Thank you! 80 grit flap disk and cup brush on angle grinder; stainless knotted brushes (you didn't use but could have). I have all three of those abrasives, or pretty close. Bought them all at Harbor Freight when I got my DeWalt corded angle grinder at Lowe's - my first tool purchase when I started to teach myself automotive. Nowadays I know better and I'd probably opt for cordless, but that grinder won't quit and sometimes corded is better. That said, the Harbor Freight corded ones seem to stand up OK and are dirt cheap, so when I get a second and third ones so I don't have to change out attachments that's what I'll probably do. :)

There are plenty of people doing tool shows that go over some of the cheaper alternatives and I have watched a few shows that swear by 3m abrasives which are indeed better but much more money. If I don't show it I speak of it, I mentioned everything here but keep in mind I have an entire folder of this including a video of just me and cans of paint and lubes and stuff explaining the use.

I realized recently that the chain wax/lube that you like so much - I've been using it for literally decades since I first started sailing. It's Boeshield T9! It goes on as a liquid and when it dries it's a thin lubricating wax film. I actually just sprayed some on some rusted flat metal parts (after wire brushing, of course) connecting the governor rod to the carb on the generator I'm working on. I use it on the extending legs of the tent I use when I set up to sell my baked goods. If I knew it was chain wax I'd probably have been using it on small engines a lot more, now that I actually understand all its applications! ;-) Since you did a stint on aircraft I'm sure you already know the stuff. Wicked expensive but it goes a long way and does a great job.

Yup,, CRC has or had a nice protectant similar to cosmoline, that's the stuff often sprayed on machined parts to protect them.

The largest 5 horsepower snow blower I've used was an MTD 22 inch. I recently picked up one of the older ones from the 90s but I haven't had significant amount of snow to see how it doesn't end of driveway. I have had that really cheap single 22 inch MTD with the lawnmower style control handles. Where are these smaller Tecumseh Engines really shine is on the Toro 521 what should I have seen videos of with the stock Tecumseh. Primary powered 521 with a predator 212 engine so it really perform well. I'm sure Toro's drum auger combined with impeller blades that are closer to the housing than on other machines do help with the performance.

I have a few vids on the Toro 826 which is an older machine but really a tank! I like the Toro auger system and the larger engine pushes through everything! Just finishing up another nice Craftsman 27 inch green model with the 11hp Tecumseh with the cast cylinder. I hear snow is possible this week,,,,,good luck!!

I love the older stuff! I have an older Snapper Snowblower that is rock solid. Original paint was buffed and looks new! I lubricated it and thing works like a champ! Has electric start too! I have only had o replace the shoes and fix a flat tire. The newer ones are so cheaply made. Great video Arch!

Very cool and great job on resrecting the beast . I can't recall the acid you use. I watched when you had redone your fuse panel and had used it there. So if you could share I'd be grateful. Now as for the pain it's and implement paint right. Is it a self leveling paint as well . Again thanks for this vid , I absolutely love folk's like you who should how to do and what you do . And the tips and tricks with lub of specific areas. As for chain wax is that something they use on trail bike chains. Thanks again you rock. 👏👏👏👏👍✌️🙃🇨🇦

Kewl,, thanx I will add your questions to my Saturday Night Live show!! Briefly, I use 2 acids, I often speak of this. The 1st is a aluminum cleaner, aluma-brite--great for many non ferrous metals 2nd is a Kirker product or Eastwood-metal prep I use chain wax and chain lube as well, slightly different formula,,,Both dry up to a point but the wax a bit more

OK, Arch, I'm here now. Muahahahaha! 24/03/05, on to my next restoration video. 11:25 WHAT paint "that I like"!!! What paint? Here's what I'm sayin'. You're describing products and we may not have seen you use this product in a previous video so we have no idea what you're talking about! You should assume every viewer to every video is new to your channel and has never seen any of your previous videos. Answer every conceivable question anyone may ask and you'll cover all the bases. Right?
@TheNovaJohn
@TheNovaJohn 6 ай бұрын
I talked about it, gave the name and type as well! & No, never answer every conceivable question, that's crazy, vid would be too long, people don't pay attention, you didn't pay attention either did ya? I said what I used! I will show stuff and yet people skip that and ask me.. Most tubers wont answer those questions either, if ya cant be bothered to watch we cant be bothered to answer a question that is covered already in a video! All this takes time, how much should we cater to people if they don't want to put their time in? Ya also don't try to shoot ya load in every video either. 10 minute video they watch 4-5 minutes on average. A short 1 minute the average watch time is 30 seconds or so. I have an entire folder on products people can watch. Besides, when people ask good questions it makes for good answers which equates to engagement time here in the comment area and that really helps. Remember, these vids are free and we are NOT professionals! If ya stayed to the end and listened ya question would have been answered!

@@roberth.8642 I have actually named that concept. It’s called Murphy’s Reverse Law - if you over-prepare for something and have secondary and tertiary backups then the primary event will never occur. I came up with it as a sailor. When you’re out at sea and it hits the fan, things can go really wrong very quickly. If one system or part of a rig fails, then another, without backups, then a third thing will fail and you’re done for. With over-preparedness this never happens because the backups are in place and rarely need to be activated. Makes ocean deliveries and races a whole lot less stressful. 😉👍

@TheNovaJohn

I didn't complain in this video but the other videos on this machine I know I do to some degree! This one also has the dual auger belts with no real belt guide The brake, if ya could call it that is a tab on the bottom of the tensioner, also acts as a lower guide but for one belt only as it doesn't cover the second belt. Its this tab that contacts the belt when auger is not engaged. This stops the auger, kinda lol This is another where if ya adjust the cable to stop the auger its too loose. I have 2 here now that use a cable adjuster that is a plate with holes staggered, if ya pic one, its loose, the other its too tight! Some of these machines ya just cant be particular.

@@TheNovaJohn Get what your saying but the belt cover acts as the guide and the new updated version with the metal insert inside is great. Our last order just came in on the three different sizes and we will be installing them shortly.
@TheNovaJohn
@TheNovaJohn Жыл бұрын
@@waynestefinashen239 Nice,, keep in mind, the cover may act as a belt guide but only on machines that utilize this, many have metal bars on the top so a cover isn't the guide. This when applicable is only a guide for the Top Area, the underside in most cases still have nothing! Many of the Ariens models have a very impressive guide system on the bottom
