I always use the "what's the worst that can happen?" with this situation, you'd be out the parts cost (rather minimal) and use your current working (older) dishwasher. Best case scenario you have a much newer ss dishwasher. I got into property development and occasionally attempt stuff out of my comfort zone. If it's a few hundred dollars worth of material I figure worst case I'm out a few hundred but if it saves me a couple thousand in labour, totally worth it. Sometimes I surprise myself on how well the project turn out.

Bought the spring from home depot (easy return just in case) and took less than an hour. It even came with 2 bars to undo the spring tension.

At last, a channel adressing a very important topic: the extreme carelessness with which we just discard items that are repairable. There was a time when we would make stuff last as long as possible. Now, unfortunately, it's "use it then throw it"... That and programmed obsolescence... Slowly eating up all of our natural resources.. Thank you for this, sir!... And BTW: a Mr. Coffee coffee maker that has it's pilot lamp on showing it's got juice, but the electronic display doesn't turn on and, of course, the machine does not make coffee. Heater not turning on either. Have any idea? I haven't opened it up, yet, so I have no idea what's wrong with it. It was fine one minute and then it just stopped working... And thanks again! We need more shows like yours to emphasize the importance of repairing instead of sending to landfill...

If it were my dishwasher, I would have tried to save $45, by melting the crack closed with a soldering iron. Otherwise, hot deal! Burned-out dryer elements can be shortened, sometimes. Their squeeky bearings can be rotated 90°. In our case, 3 times over 30 years. Most people lack the skill to troubleshoot, let alone repair anything. That includes garden hoses. I don't discard garden hoses until they are too short to have any practical use.
@FrugalRepair5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don’t know if I would trust the melting technique to hold the water pressure. Have you done something like that before?
@williamdegnan47185 жыл бұрын
@@FrugalRepair Yes, if you get the plastic hot enough to reflow. You would need to revise the crack - inside and out. But, it depends on where you want to spend $45. For some people it is a small price for peace of mind. For me, it is money - needed elsewhere.

I also cleaned all the seals and pump and got a good year out of it! The bearings disintegrated and sadly wrote it off. But the door, hinges, seal and lock were stripped out before disposal and fitted onto my friends identical model which had been leaking! I don't come from a family of money. So I've always been a fan of buying used or refurbished things, and fixing my own things when they fail. Recently we bought a DLP projector on eBay for $50, as we really wanted a nice size screen, but didn't want to shell out the amount of money required for it had we gone for a TV. We really don't care that much about resolution, so long as we can enjoy what we are watching. The projector was missing two key items: a remote, and a power cable. Luckily, the power cable is the same kind that is used by a standard ATX power supply, so I had a spare. The remote was an additional $25 to buy brand new, aftermarket. All went well, aside from having to purchase an HDMI audio extractor from Best Buy, as I didn't realize just how bad the audio output of this projector would be, and my stereo doesn't have and HDMI passthrough. And then, less than a week later, dead pixels started showing up on the screen. At this point I'd already paid for it, and wasn't going to pay the return shipping to send it back, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. What was happening was that the DLP chip, a chip covered in tiny moving mirrors in order to manipulate light to create an image, was failing. So I went ahead and opened it up, just to see if I could as I wasn't sure. When I finally gained access to the chip, I noticed that the thermal paste sitting between the heatsink and chip had dried up and become brittle. So I took the chip out, and went online to order a replacement that I had found on eBay for $85. At this point the part cost more than the entire projector, but it was either spend more money and have a working projector, or lose the initial $75 (projector and remote) with nothing to show for it. After putting the replacement chip in with some new, higher quality, thermal paste, the projector works again. It currently sits on a shelf behind our couch, and has become the living room TV, projecting a 73" image on a $52 screen that I bought used on Amazon. I did sell a couple of items that I had, which had no use to me, which took the $85 I spent, and brought the loss down to $5. So that left me with a grand total of $177 spent on the entire setup, including the HDMI audio extractor. I can't find a similar sized TV in my area for that price (closest one is 111 miles from me, which would set me back quite a bit in gas to pick up), and a new TV would set me back a lot more.

Congratulations on a great save and repair - you kept a new dishwasher out of the bone yard and passed on your working unit to someone else. I had a big repair myself recently on my 8 year old LG Wave Force clothes washer. I replaced the washer top that has rusted out around the bleach dispenser for the second time (first time was covered under an extended warranty in 2014). It was a pretty big job and I was lucky the top was still available from Amazon, about $110. The first time around the top lasted about 3 years before rusting; this time it was about 5 years. Not quite as bad and this time I caught it before it started dropping rusty bits into the wash, but this time the top had actually rusted a lot around the top of the washer where the top meets the tub - that didn't happen on the first go round. Come on LG, you got to do better than this! Needless to say I am wiping that rim around the tub dry after every wash.

One thing you can bet is that there is no REAL 300 grade stainless steel on the door or ANY appliance. If you can put a magnet on it and it attracts, it is 400+ stainless which is a mild stainless steel with regular steel mixed in so it can RUST!! You do NOT need to use stainless steel cleaner on this as this steel is covered in a thick clear polyurethane coating, so you are only putting on an expensive cleaner you do not need to use. Just use a mild soapy cleaner and wipe dry.

Is there no warranty in the US?? How dumb can someone be to instantly throw something away...

There is but negligence is not covered under warranty.

yes but if everyone starts fixing their broken tvs and appliances there will be no more free goodies by curbside!!
@FrugalRepair4 жыл бұрын
Do you think that would realistically happen?

People are naturally lazy. If they can afford to just buy a replacement when their old item fails, they will. The sad part is that the old item is often just thrown away, even though it could be a very simple thing to repair for someone else. I'm happy to see free broken electronics and appliances on the curb, as it means that those items have a chance of being repaired as opposed to potentially winding up in a landfill.

Sell the old one? Give it away, I’m sure that the way you were thankful finding this one for free somebody else will be same getting yours for free

Thanks for your comment. I might normally do that but I didn't exactly get this working for free. I also wanted to recoup some costs in case there were any more gotcha's with this one I picked from the trash.

Dude come one!. 2 months old so its still should be 10 months warranty left Dosnt make any sence. Get real and make real videos

Did you watch the whole video? It wouldn’t qualify for warranty because they were negligent.
