A small led tv developed perfectly round circles on the screen ranging from about 1 inch to 3 inches on the inside of the glass, not on the exposed surface. I took off the glass tried cleaning it but they are still there. I'm dumbfounded as to how they got there and how to remove them. Other than that, it works perfectly.

Some, all or equivalent substitute tools could be bought for super cheap. So there's still a large turnaround. Think. 25. Maybe 50 bucks. To repair a TV that costs probably 3000. 🧠 Even the 100 for a replacement board is a fraction.

I think the coefficient of thermal expansion is different between the chip that gets hot, and the board it's soldered to. This slight difference in thermal expansion causes a stress fracture over time in the relatively weaker solder that bonds the two components together.

T-CON stands for 'Tiny Control'? lol I pull these TVs from curbs all the time, I am blown away how casually people toss them. Usually the worst problem I have with the TVs is no remote. And even if there is a cracked screen, plug it in anyway, there's usually what looks like abstract art on the screen. I have used those as uniquely creative table tops lots of times and they last for a couple years, even if you purposely keep cracking the screen. At times, I have had 50+ inch TVs in every single room of the house, including the bathroom and hallway, just because I could (until the next months electrical bill brought that to a screeching halt.).

In the repair world it would be considered a bandaid. Reflowing got a bad rap because people would do the same on GPUs for computers and call it fixed. But the problem with GPUs were mostly bad chips. There isn't any real way of knowing if the chip itself is bad or if it's potentially cracked joints underneath from warping. So the safest options is usually just replace the chip or the entire board.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair 2 жыл бұрын
2011 MacBook GPU is an infamous one. You could technically know if it’s the solder balls versus a bond wire in the chip if you have access to an X-ray inspection machine. =)

@@red2965 I would say cash flow is usually not going to be an issue for most of these "throwaway" electronics. Of all the laptops, TVs, motherboards I've repaired it's been a regulator, MOSFET, etc for the most part. Something that's been 50 cents to $1 from AliExpress(occasionally Digikey for me) or free from salvage. The time it takes to figure out the fault/do the repair and wait weeks for parts usually only available from China is what most people don't want to do.
@red2965
@red2965 2 жыл бұрын
@@TM-op7zb only the diy can make that statement of you put it in the shop it isn't worth fixing because It generally cost as much as a replacement one these days it isn't like the old days tube goes out it was pretty easy to figure out then came solid state then it's all on a micro chip and thousands of dollars for equipment to diagnose issues then there's the problematic schematic issue since companies want to be secretive. Stepping away for a second the KIA is a good example.

Could be a lot of things. Seems heat related though. First try turning down the backlight brightness and see if it lasts longer. If the backlights are not the issue, try taking the back cover off and putting a fan blowing air directly on to the main board and see if it lasts longer. Look at any capacitors on the power supply for damage. Some thoughts to get started

This is probably a dumb question to someone in the know, but where do you put the negative lead when you are probing the connections with a multimeter? We saw and understood the connectors you were probing with the positive probe but not where you complete the circuit with the negative. Is it just the chassis, the neutral feed on the power cord or something else? Thanks in advance for any help.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair 2 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. I have the black probe on the metal chassis. I usually have it in a hole in the metal and hang it at an angle so you don’t have to hold the probe. Any metal touching to where the screws to the boards are is good for a negative probe spot.

I've repaired TVs by switching out diodes that were obviously bad swollen and I've rewet solder connections on boards, but I have a question about my newest curb TV that said " works but no remote" Well, that wasn't true, at least the part about "works" anyway. So I wiped it off and plugged it in, looking for the standby ready light which did light up. Next I tried to find the control buttons on the outside of it which to my amazement, there were none except for a large power button underneath the standby light. So I pushed it and for a split second the screen had a flash of light go across it and that was it, after that the standby light started blinking. I'm sure this all means something, but I don't know what. Can I get some ideas from you? I look at it as a challenge to fix if it's fixable 🤔

Great to hear you are fixing things! For that TV it could be a bunch of things. My first thought is the led backlight shorting out. For example, you can disconnect the backlight and see if you still get the blinking indicator light.

I call it a design flaw. But nobody wants fan noise on a TV so this type of issue will continue to occur. I don't see any way of having that type of processing capacity to support 4k and not having a heat issue with only passive cooling
@vgamesx1
@vgamesx1 2 жыл бұрын
I call it planned obsolesce, if you want passive cooling then all you need is more surface area, thus a larger heat sink, but they want to make it as thin and light as possible, they're probably saving a buck where a little metal would make it last 5+ years longer, plus it's not as if silent or near silent fans don't exist, we use them all the time on laptops, a laptop fan just running at idle would make more than enough of a breeze to make it last longer.

Ok, gotcha. The black probe was on the metal frame of the tv. I usually stick it in a hole so it's touching the metal housing. Or I'll touch it to a screw in the corner of the PCB board since that is a known ground/reference point.

Sorry, I don’t know exactly. There may be a service menu you can gain access to. Worst case you can replace the main board or maybe replace firmware chip. And then you can fix the backlight.

Just glue 8cm 12V PC 2-wire Fan in a strategic point for air circulation, and solder to the USB (+) and (-) (pin 1 and 4 ) . Test. It will be quiet and work only when the TV is ON.

I picked up a 60 inch tv and no start condition. Found selector switch on rear with shorts. Ran current through it and conditioned the contacts and it worked again. If they would have spent about ten cents and used pull up resistors the contacts would stay clean.

2013 M60-c3 Vizeo - takes long time (5-10mins) for video to come on. Power light does come on but immediately goes off - I will continue to power on and off with remote -(eventually power light goes from bright to dim - stays on - and video starts working). Only input is from HTPC Onkyo 1030 receiver at HDMI 5 - 4k 60 hertz.

Not sure, might be a similar CPU loosing connection with the board issue. You can try a hair dryer on the main board and see if you can get it to turn on faster than 5 min.

Try blocking some of the clock signals with tape on one of the ribbon cables going to your lcd screen buffer boards as you may have a short circuit in T con board somewhere. If that doesn't work probably lcd screen is the problem and can't be fixed.good luck

Your LED backlight is the problem. You can replace all of the LED strips or try to fix the individual bad LEDs. If you do this, the hardest part is making sure not to crack the lcd screen and keeping the lens and diffusion films as dust free as possible (and in the right order when putting it back together).

I’d recommend posting on social media and asking around if someone has a broken TV laying around. There’s always the free groups but many of them are broken screen units. You can also ask a local electronics place (not a big box store) if you can have any customers are turning in.

I'd check the wifi connections from the main board to the wifi module in the tv. It might be a firmware thing too. Or the wifi chip or the main board went bad. Can you try a ethernet cable to make sure the internet portion of the tv works?

A lot of failed visios like these have this problem. One way to help these sets last longer is to turn off the quick start mode so it takes longer to start but the board doest stay hot its whole life, and save electricity innthe process. Flux and reflow followed by a nice slow cooling cycle should do the trick.
