I'm a foreigner in Germany and I turned 18 during a covid lockdown. That means that all my papers expired on my birthday and I could not apply to the school I wanted to go to. The consulate of my country was closed multiple times and I had to wait for 14 months to get my new papers. So yeah my life has been a limbo since then. I will finally continue my studies next year in September. Based on my experience, the students that could not enter Japan must have felt horrible. It feels like everyone else is doing fine and you are the only one being fucked over. Like life stopped for you while everyone you know is going forward.

13:23 I waited for 18 months to study in Japan as a language student. Finally thought I might make it in November 2021 when the border announcement came for students, only for Omicron to arrive in December. Japan closed the borders again and I've since cancelled and gone back to work in the UK as I couldn't carry on like this for any longer. So this part of this podcast was a little bittersweet. To answer why I and other students have waited so long, the 18 months was essentially a never ending process of being strung along every few months. For most of 2021, the Japanese government never confirmed when the borders would open, but the immigration authorities kept extending Certificates of Entitlement (documents students are issued to apply for a visa at a Japanese embassy) for between 3 and 6 months at a time. However, embassies would not accept visa applications while the borders were closed. The result was a cycle of students, language schools and universities getting their hopes up that the borders would open by the end of the latest CoE extension, but each time they just extended CoEs after that. Some schools even encouraged students to start their courses online, promising they could continue from their more advanced stage after they'd entered Japan, assuming the borders would open soon. As it's happened, for most students they never did. Shout out to all those who braved those online lessons through the night, as you have to do here in the UK and Europe due to time zones. I turned that option down as I knew I couldn't handle it. I hope you make it in the end.

13:23 I'd like to weigh in on the discussion regarding entry to Japan and borders opening up. New foreign entries are not allowed into the country and essentially haven't for 2 years (unless you're a famous DJ or an olympic athlete). Regardless of having a legitimate reason to go to Japan, be it for work, studies or as a dependent (this is generally the visa given to close family members of a foreigner living in Japan) we are not allowed in. Applying for special circumstances was difficult and has been made impossible after the re-closure this December. The only new entries allowed at the moment are spouses and children of Japanese nationals or Permanent Residents, and refugees. Before COVID, getting your Certificate of Eligibility (which proves your eligibility for a visa and entry into the country) was all you needed to make your visa and get into the country. However now the process of making the visa is put on hold due to Japan's entry restrictions, which aside from a brief opening in 2020 Oct-Dec and the three weeks from November 8th of this year has been on hold for 2 years. When they "opened" the borders on November 8th, they added a new requirement for making the visa which is the "screening certificate". Applying for this certificate was so incredibly cumbersome that only about 200 people of the 300'000 waiting to get into Japan were let in. Some people who were able to get this certificate in time have their visa in hand but still cannot enter the country because they are a "new entry" which is not allowed starting December 1st. Many have been waiting patiently for 2 years. Some have become homeless and have gone through immense financial difficulty while waiting for the country to open up. I work for a Japanese company remotely while waiting for the country to open up and finally being able to live my life again. Due to the lack of clear information and bureaucratic nightmare applying for the screening certificate was, my company wasn't able to get this certificate in time. I have no access to my salary as it is in my Japanese bank account. I pay into my Japanese retirement pension, I pay for health care, social health care, and all the other taxes that are deducted from my salary every month. Next month I will also be paying for my apartment I can't live in (getting the contract was necessary in order to apply for the screening certificate). I pay for things I am not able to take advantage of because I'm a "new entry", yet I am financially contributing to the country. Not to mention the decline in my mental health by not working in optimal conditions due to the distance and time differences, as well as being separated from my partner who lives in Japan. If only being eligible for a visa would actually let you make the visa and get into the country. Unfortunately for Japan it's not that simple.

Good god. All I can say is that Omicron is probably* a trend of the virus going towards a less harmful direction based on current studies, so hopefully you will be able to go back into your country of employment fairly soon. Have no idea what to say about the bureaucracy :(

That threw me off as an Australian haha. Never quite sure whether we're considered Western (culturally) or Eastern (geographically), but I guess all in all east and west are completely relative unlike north/south so it doesn't really matter.

It’s cause depending on the time zone you’re in, you get in a day before the day they actually upload it. For example in the part of US I live in, the time difference between where I live and Japan is 16 hours. So whatever time it is for me, it’s the next day over there. TT uploads on Saturdays in Japan so I get it on Fridays.
@Red-mg4ro3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a great year, to the bois, the production team, and everyone else. The TT community, even on something like Reddit, is... more chill than you'd expect. But all the petty drama is pretty scarce, so that aside, I really appreciate everything you've all done to keep us entertained. Keep up the great work, take care of yourselves, remember to enjoy yourselves, and happy new year.

When they talk about christmas in australia, as a southeast asian (Philippines), I can totally relate to joey. Christmas is christmas regardless of how hot it is here. Plus there's this thing here called "ber months", from septemBER to DecemBER and it's the sign of the christmas spirit. So in Philippines, you can see christmas decorations as early as september 1. And it ends around 1st-2nd week of january

I got into Tokyo University to do politics in Feb to start in September. (I'm in the UK). I got the document to get the visa in June, hoping I'd be able to get over end of August. And that didn't happen and I then thought well it must be by the end of the year for sure and also hoping I'd be able to do the lectures and lessons on demand ( at least some of them). I started virtually from the UK in sept and my day was from 02.00 AM to 10.00 AM. This was hell starting at 2 AM doing 2 hrs of Japanese then do 6 more hrs of lessons (it was laid out like a UK sixth form school day for comparison). I got to November and I was depressed and listening to nirvana so I couldn't go on. I applied and got a leave of absence which meant that I would basically restart the 1st semester in April. A week after I started my leave of absence the Japan COVID rules got worse and worse and they announced their very poor plan to let students into the country where I wouldn't be able to enter the country until at least mid next year. Anyway I am unfortunately no longer going to study in Japan which is a shame but I can't wait to come back. I just got over before main COVID in Jan 2019 for a holiday. Thank you for all your content. P.s. I'm one of the fans who has zero interest in anime yet watches all of your (and significant other's) channels.

To get back to the ordering ramen issue where you get the broth separate from the noodles and the toppings has another reason, you can microwave the broth or warm it up in a pan to make it piping hot again to have the best experience. A ramenshop where I live does this as well, and it's so much better after reheating the broth.
