As a structural engineer I'll say: you should NOT go out of your apartment building if there's an earthquake. Your best bet is a bottom floor stairwell since they usually have thick concrete walls for fire rating and often serve as the core of the building, but practically speaking, trying to go down stairs in an earthquake isn't exactly safe or recommended. You're second best bet is to dive under a heavy table or your bed (if it's sturdy), followed by a doorway. Masonry facade buildings and those with hanging signage are notorious for falling off the exterior of the building and collapsing on people in the streets or exiting the building. There are some exceptions... If you're in a grocery store where the shelves aren't secure or you're concerned something might fall from the ceiling on you, either find a sturdy table to dive under, find a spot in the store you're not at risk, or get out (assuming it's not a masonry structure). Also, if you're in any pre-cast prestressed structure... Well... GTFO. Those pieces of junk fall down all the time in earthquakes. You can tell your apartment is one if you see big metal clips holding together big slabs of concrete. Those metal clips fatigue and fail pretty easily in an earthquake, and you'll often see after a collapse these massive pristine slabs of concrete that fell several stories to the ground crushing whatever was below.

@YuSooKey3 жыл бұрын
They dump on America every chance they get but you notice Garnt never shit talks Thailand or Thais and Conner never talks poorly of Welsh people or Wales, only England/UK generally. What is so horrible about loving your own country or thinking it's the best. I listened on Spotify and didn't watch the guys this time but it seemed like they had their noses in the air for the first third of the podcast. Being well traveled and living abroad may give you some more perspective on the world however, it doesn't make one wiser or a better person. Joey claims his AUS friends would be more open minded and have a broader mindset if they left their home towns but does he not realize Japanese people are the same. Most don't leave Japan for their entire lives except to maybe visit a SEA country or Hawaii on holiday yet he only has these criticisms of Americans. I think Garnt was trying to get Joey to realize how people have varying perspectives on things and that he didn't have the right to judge them on how they saw things but it went over Joey's head. The boys have their preconceived notions and values and they openly push those beliefs onto others subconsciously.

Fun fact: Japan is a part of the "Pacific ring of fire" which is basically a line on the tectonic plates that goes across a big part of the globe, countries in this area tend to have a SHIT TON of earthquakes BUT also Volcanoes are really freaking abundant, Pretty unfortunate to be in this shit, I live in Chile and we literally are the Shakiest country in the world but people don't really know that cause everyone thinks about Japan lol

Yeah not be whiny but whenever the Philippines, the most hurricane prone country in the world, has a hurricane and Indonesia, the most volcanic eruption AND earthquake prone country in the world, has either a volcanic eruption or earthquake people tend to just ignore it, but whenever Japan gets hit by a fart people freak out.
@Jerry42813 жыл бұрын
The outermost part of California where I live is also part ring of fire. Me I will die from earthquakes this is fine. I live in a older majority community as well, so I am basically living in Japan in a sense 😂😂😂 (That's a joke, but if I did live in Nihon not much would change for me besides being immersed in the Japanese language.) Also, I've never had a problem with anyone here, but again I don't know if that's cause I am a nerd. Or because I don't go out as much etc. So, I say it's pretty safe (but again my friends have gotten mugged and stuff.) Get me I've never had a problem living where I live, but hopefully one day I can visit Japan.

this triggered my geography class but yes! the mantle in the earth heated up from the hot core, which allowed the mantle to expand, rise and go beneath the tectonic plates, forming convection currents. Hence, this allows the dense, oceanic philippines plate to subduct under the less dense, continental eurasian plate, this subduction driving the downward moving portion of the convection current. This convergent movement causes the continental plate to buckle and fold, forming fold mountains. Hence, this subduction causes the mantle above the subducted plate to melt, caused by the subduction of the oceanic plate. Therefore, this melted magma forms magma, which allows it to rise up the fold mountains and hence form volcanoes. When it erupts, the lava would also harden, and form a greater part of the volcano too! For earthquakes, the convergence between the plates cause friction between the plate boundaries, causing tension and pressure to build up as the plates slide past each other, allowing energy to accumulate. Hence, as the plates are unable to hold the pressure anymore, the plates slide, causing a large amount of energy to be released in the form of seismic waves, hence forming earthquakes! Japan, being along the convergent plate boundary of the Pacific Ring of Fire, causes active volcanoes and high magnitude earthquakes to form. whoops, sorry for this, i saw pacific ring of fire and i had to do this

I sleep naked. And people always bring up "but what if there's a fire or other emergency?" Well, I've experienced several kinds. A faulty fire alarm went off twice in the night in an apartment I lived in, I just put on pajama pants once I was conscious and went outside, took about an extra 10 seconds, which if that was going to kill you, you'd already be dead. Another time was during a tornado warning, where I was woken completely naked and got on a shirt, pajama pants and shoes in less than a minute and headed to the basement, and was more prepared (since having shoes is actually important) than the person who woke me up.

American news is majority negative in tone. As someone in the west living outside America, at least half or more of our news is centered around America (even moreso on the internet). Therefore, it isn't hard to believe that a lot of people's opinions are negatively shaped by the only news they hear/read about America. If I were to only listen to reddit or twitter, you would think America is a "third-world" country with the majority of people starving to death on the streets. If you have ever visited or worked with Americans, the vast majority of them are not noticeably different than other people from other western countries.

Sadly the castles that Connor is braging about were a staple of the normans, when conquering a people they would use it to establish strong positions, as a matter of fact, Wales has the most castles in all of Europe, a lasting legacy of the anglo-norman conquest of wales(though the amount of castles really does show how hard the welsh fought back, a sign of their bravery if you will)
