It's not just that it happens in real life. A lot of the stuff depicted in more fucked up hentai happens somewhere in the world, too. Metamorphosis's claim to fame, though, is that it ernestly makes us emphasize with Saki. It focuses more on her development and slow spiral downward than the s**, which makes it feel more real than many other mangas with drugs and messed up parents. An example I like to use is Eisei no Zen. The premise of that manga is entirely unrealistic - it's about an immortal woman being tortured by an emperor who wants to unlock the secrets of immortality, and the karma exacted as a consequence. Obviously fantastical, but it's portrayed in such a philosophical way that you can't help but relate it to real life.

So in NYC, we do leave our garbage out in bags on the street instead of inside of in containers, so yes, if it was the middle of summer, it would reek of garbage. I’m surprised that he didn’t intend for Metamorphosis to send a message, because for me it sent the message of how easy it is to fall. The girl went from normal life to destitute in less than a year just because of a few bad choices. It helped me think about my job in pharmacy, about just how many people get suboxone, which is a drug that helps with opioid withdrawal, and about how any of them could have just made that one bad choice that sent them down the wrong path. The saddest part to me is that Saki never got to be happy. Most tragedies start with a character in a happy place, or a relatively good place, and then slow fall. Saki's entire life is *just the fall.* Even in the beginning, Saki's life is boring, sterile, and miserable. No friends, no fun, nothing real. By the end her life is raw hedonism - sex, drugs, and attention - but all empty. She just goes from one kind of deeply miserable to the *opposite* kind of deeply miserable, and then *dies.* She never even got the chance to save herself.

That already made me kind of sick to my stomach, and it kind of sums up the weird justifications people come up with for this doujin. "It's supposed to be disturbing!" "It's realistic!" Idk about you, but I don't think women who are getting raped make ahegao faces and have heart eyes. At the end of the day, it's fiction so I don't really care if you like it or not, or if you appreciate it or not. But I certainly don't agree with the high praise for it being this really incredible, thought-provoking work. Especially since most of the conversation surrounding it doesn’t have anything to do with the themes, but the graphic and disturbing content. Anyway, if you want something that's on the complete opposite end of the spectrum (mostly) I'd recommend Jorori's works.

I'm not against depicting disturbing themes like rape in media and entertainment, but I am against glorification and banalization of those themes.
