@@skalman5647 Japan requires you to have a bachelors degree in something from a internationally recognized University though so not anyone. Then you also need a TEFL or TESL certification. It is easier to teach English as a foreign language but it's not just "apply out of highschool and get the job" easy.

In Germany there is a shortage of teachers who studied to be teachers so they also take people who studied sth else like maths, physics, engineering, literature etc. And hire them but they will fire them for the summer break and re-hire them when the new school year begins. It's so bad.... In comparison 60% of the wage in August sounds fair 😞😓

And our teachers have this fucked up shit in Ontario where they can take 90 days off a year at 90 or 95% pay. It’s so fucked. They can stretch 3 years pay to 4 and take the 4th year off. Across the board from kindergarten to gr12. Uni profs make way more like 150k or some dumb shit

The shortage of teachers in Germany became even bigger due to the children of refugees from Syria and Ukraine. Since Japan has a shrinking population their need fo teachers should go down in the future.

People make fun of english teachers part of the jet program and similar things all the time. Doesn't really take any skills or degrees in particular, and is generally thought of as a job for "losers". Definitely not easy moving to a foreign country and teaching though.

It's so sad to see teaching becoming less and less of a profession people take because of how little we get paid. Like I study in a university with over 40k students and less than 300 students took education as a major. Most where I live rather be doctors or engineers cause that's what'll set them financially. A teachers job is seriously underappreciated

South Korea is one of the few countries to treat teachers better. Being a teacher is actually a really competitive position, and they get paid well. Other countries should take note. Education is the path to a better future in terms of creating innovation and building wealth.

Are you sure, i think that's true for teachers in general, but this is talking about foreign English teachers, who don't make much in Korea either, from what i know(could be wrong), it's only slightly above minimum wage.

korea`s overall education system is kind of a joke though, and a lot of that comes from their ridiculous work culture. A lot of kids in Korea are at a school from like 8am to 11pm. That`s not an efficient use of time and the focus is all on tests... it`s just a mess.

This is one of the reasons I moved to Korea to teach instead of Japan. The conditions are a lot better (depending on the school) and I get overtime pay and pay for the holiday vacations. Japan is cool to visit. But for living, Korea is better for English teachers.

@@ammarahmed4532 Korea promotes English language as a necessity, so they take it far more seriously. A lot of places also require foreigners who want to teach English to have relevant certification (TESOL/TEFL), so the expectations are higher to start with.

@@ericng5707 the level of English is higher in Korea than japan, but i think that's more due to the volume of migrants from korea to countries like the US as compared to japan. Also afaik, you only need a bachelor's degree in Korea as well for most places, is that wrong? Also how does that make it better for the teachers themselves?

Just like Japan, Korea only requires a bachelor's to get the teaching visa. But that's just the visa. A lot of places won't consider you unless you have TEFL/TESOL/CELTA. When the schools, students, and parents expect teachers to meet certain standards and will pay accordingly, the foreigner teachers have more incentives to teach properly and take a long-term career view. In Japan, anyone with a pulse from a country where English is spoken (doesn't even need to be the main language) can be hired by the ALT dispatch companies and eikaiwa schools. There's no need for proper English teaching qualifications and no tenure or better paying senior position to work towards. The system is set up with high turnover as the norm and is rife with questionable practices (it was actually illegal for Pete to teach while on a tourist visa, for example). Hardly conducive to job security or career development for the teachers.

I worked for the Census Bureau and I got paid $19hr. Recently I wanted to become a Teacher but I needed the "experience" despite of working for FREE field work experience... Now I am working as a school attendance officer for that "experience" and I get paid $10 hr for a similar work description as a Census Bureau. Schools make it so hard to get a job, even the paper work for the resume and shit is a headache. Then they wonder why there is little to no staff. Previous attendance officer quit so I have to clean up after them, plus do other jobs that are outside my real work. The best is that they tell me "oh I made mistakes so don't worry" and basically I have to learn through errors, its sink or swim. smh

I teach 10 college classes a semester and few private classes. I make less than $1200 a month and rely on my 5 classes during winter and summer vacations, which is not much. Next step up for me is most likely going to be at a conbini. I'll probably make the same, but work more hours. It will probably be more fulfilling than teaching at least.

I’ve been in Japan for 7 years - teaching for 4, real job for 3. English teaching is full of losers from overseas with no other skills and also most companies are insanely shady. HOWEVER - some schools can pay decent money, it’ll never be a career but you can get some decent money and there are also like in my case some great friends to be made from abroad. Overall it should only be used as a stepping stone to something else or emergency way to earn money.
