The train travel to Bangkok is estimated to take 2.5 hours, although it usually takes closer to 3 hours due to delays, but it does not drag on and become monotonous. We arrived at around 6 p.m., after an almost three-hour journey, with plenty of time to stroll to our guest's home. Trains are a fantastic way to travel, and the older the train, the better.
The quickest (and best) way to purchase train tickets for the Kanchanaburi to Bangkok train is to do it when you arrive at the train station. This may be a source of anxiety for some travellers, although travelling the train in Thailand is extremely popular. Almost often, a seat is available.
Trains from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok arrive at Thonburi station rather than Hua Lamphong station, where the majority of trains enter and depart. Kanchanaburi is approximately 84 miles from Bangkok (135 km).
You only need to arrive 30 minutes before the train is scheduled to depart at Kanchanaburi station. On the day of departure, purchasing tickets at the station was simple. Each of our tickets cost 100 baht (about £2.35, $3, or Euro 2.80).
Our train consisted of six carriages, some of which had hardwood chairs and others which had padded seats. We chose a carriage with hardwood seats because it appeared to be a more enjoyable mode of transportation.
One of my favourite aspects of travelling on Thai trains is seeing the food vendors constantly arrive and go. On our train, a woman was selling a variety of fruits, nuts, and eggs. Other vendors offered cold beverages, dried pork, rice and noodle dishes, and a few other items. On the train, the atmosphere was very calm, and everyone looked to be having a good time.
I'd say around 90% of the passengers on the train were Thai, with a few foreigners. Because Thai trains run slowly, you may get a good look at the scenery along the way. The train made multiple stops along the route, with no one boarding or disembarking at some of them.
We saw a well-dressed railway official with red and green flags at every station, indicating when the train should halt and when it should go. During WWII, the Nong Pladuk station became the starting point of the Death Railway, which ran all the way to Thanbyuzayat, Myanmar.
Rice fields and fruit farms line much of the highway between Kanchanaburi and Bangkok. Except when leaving Kanchanaburi, where you'll see hills and mountains in the distance, the region is mostly flat.
