Great video! There are actually 9 free National Parks here in the US. I honestly didn’t realize there were that many. I’d also add that in the winter most of the restrooms are closed and there are limited trash bins. The Park considers itself as a seasonal park. So most facilities, some roads and restrooms are closed during the winter months. Also due to understaffing and underfunding they don’t have enough staff to handle the amount of visitors they currently get. In fact Save Our Smokies (a nonprofit organization dedicated to removing litter from the roadsides in the park) removed over 9100 lbs of litter so far in 2021.. Great info on food storage and littering! I loved it!! That’s so important to relay to the public.

We visited the Great Smoky at the end of November and though we did not have snow, it was pretty cold! That trail looked rather icy and definitely required some attention! That is an Andersen stabilizer bucket. I bought one this summer to try out and I love it. It seems so much more stable than using the orange blocks. It allows me to not have to put the tongue down so far and creates a more solid base. I would have been much more nervous with those ruts if we still had the 400.

According to NatGeo: "A black bear in Alaska can lower its temperature-generally about 91 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius)-by only about 9 to 11 degrees Fahrenheit (5 or 6 degrees Celsius), yet bring its metabolism almost to a grinding halt, at 25 percent of the normal rate." That is not true about bears lowering body temp to freezing temps ... 33 degrees Celsius not freezing ... it is almost 91 degrees Fahrenheit. Please research this. "... black bears only reduce their body temperatures slightly during hibernation, their metabolic activity drops dramatically, slowing to about 25 percent of their normal, active rates." New River National Park is also free (new in 2020). Thanks for the video. Best!

Hi Alice! I am a woman who is also in love with solo hiking. This love has been growing for about three years now. I would love to talk to you in more depth about particularly solo hiking and safety. Is there a way that I could email you or message you in someway? I think it would be so wonderful to be able to bounce some ideas off of another female who loves to solo hike in bear country.

Better take bear spray and a gun up there. My friend had a run in with a black bear and almost had to use his gun. Bear spray can only be used once so always carry a gun as well. Anyone venturing in bear country unarmed are not very smart

Black bears are harmless unless provoked . I’ve been to this park several times and never even run into one. Bear spray or a gun is not necessary

@@AliceFordAdventures . Bull I had one charge me on my farm and I wasn't doing anything. People who believe they're harmless are idiots. If it's hungry and wants you it'll get you. There's been a few cases in the smokies that have been reported and they believe alot of the people who go missing are from heard that no one found any trace of. Go ahead and go unarmed idc I'll continue to carry for mine and my family's safety. It's also better to have and not need than need and not have. Not trying to be disrespectful but I know what I've seen with bears so it's better to have

The Smokies weren't named for the fog at all actually. That's not factual. They were named because the mountains themselves start to look like blue smoke in the distance as the layers stack away into the horizon. The Cherokee called them Shaconage (sha kah no hay)... "Land of the Blue Smoke." Horace Kephart explained it the best... “It softens all outlines and lends a mirage-like effect of great distance to objects that are but a few miles off...while those farther removed grow more and more intangible until finally the sky-line blends with the sky itself.” It bothers me a lot when tourists come here and try to explain history to other people and they get our history wrong. These mountains weren't named for clouds and fog. If you want to speak of my lifelong home and the history of my people, please do your research first.

Hi Kellie, I do a lot of research when I make my videos. You may want to contact the park service and have their information corrected as well because I read what I said in many sources. But thank you so much for sharing the correct history
